Did People Watch The #DstvCompactCup?

When the tournament was announced, the overwhelming sentiment seemed negative with many influential voices unimpressed.

So I looked at the viewership numbers.

Total unique audience: 734,444 viewers
Average viewers p/game: 319,407

More ⤵️
The interesting bit about the image in the first tweet is that the most viewed game wasnt the final between Warriors and Amabutho

That shouldn't be a surprise considering the star players in the squads

📸 @OfficialPSL
I went further and compared the #DstvCompactCup viewership numbers to those of other cup cpetitions from August 2021 to February 2022

The findings were very interesting and showed that the Compact Cup was a really strong crowd puller
With an average of 319,407 per game, the compact Cup was still higher than the average number of viewers watching:

Uefa Champions League
Carabao Cup
La Liga
UEFA World Cup Qualifiers
Serie A
Perhaps 4 games isn't a good enough indicator of a successful tournament but that the tournament managed to garner such support is telling.

Proposed @CafSuperLeague Format Per @bylka613_ ⬇️

8 teams from North Africa
8 teams from Central/West Africa
8 teams from Southern/East Africa

14 games - Home & Away
Top 5 each group ➡️ Round of 16 + 1 Image
There would also be a relegation play-off between the three bottom teams of each group and the three top teams of the "CAF Confed/Zonal Cup"

There are major questions to be answered though
The rumoured $20 million funding required from teams to enter. Dr Motsepe has mentioned that private equity partners are lining up to sponsor the competition.

In addition, the nature of the pooling system is heavily weighted against traditionally stronger North African teams

Women's Sports Viewership Is Flying In England

The Women’s Sport Trust’s “visibility uncovered” study has found that the audience for domestic women’s sport amassed a total audience of almost 32.9 million people last year

[THREAD] ⤵️
📸 BBC
Of the total number of women’s sport’s viewers, 41% of viewing hours went to cricket, while football contributed 39%

These numbers are set to be boosted by BBC Sport and Sky Sports beginning with the new season in September
A key finding in the report is that the 5.9 million new viewers for the WSL had not watched any other sport in 2021 before the start of the season.

This is key because it shows there is massive untapped potential.

📸 CAF I #SportsBiz
When Patrice Motsepe ascended to power as the President of CAF on 12 March 2021, he could hardly have gone into the position at a worse time.

The federation was described as a holy mess bereft with corruption, infighting and in financial disarray
His biggest task was the state of broadcasting of football games and tournaments on the continent.

An Egyptian court scrapped a billion dollar deal that CAF had with exclusive agent for marketing and media rights, Lagardère as the deal had been concluded without any open tender

Robot referees will be used during the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup tournament in UAE 🇦🇪 this month

Contrary to most reports, they are not actual robots on the pitch. This is a breakdown of how the system works⬇️

The cameras and sensors are combined with AI technology that watches and analyses the game in real time and is ultra fast.

Video assistant referees receive a near-instant alert to whether the technology determines a player is onside or not and immediately relayed to the referee
