Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland says as of today, all crowdfunding platforms & payment service providers they use must register with Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada & must report large & suspicious transactions #cdnpoli

Says will help "mitigate the risk" these platforms receive illicit funds, increase quality and quantity of intel received by FINTRAC, & make more info available to "support investigations by law enforcement into these illegal blockades" #cdnpoli

Freeland says making changes because "we know that these platforms are being used to support illegal blockades and illegal activity, which is damaging the Canadian economy." #cdnpoli

Freeland says govt will also bring forward legislation to provide these authorities to FINTRAC on a permanent basis. #cdnpoli

Freeland says govt issuing order w/ immediate effect under Emergencies Act authorizing Canadian financial institutions to temporary cease providing financial services where institution "suspects that an account is being used to further the illegal blockades & occupations #cdnpoli

Freeland says directing Canadian financial institutions to review relationships with anyone involved in illegal blockades and report to RCMP or CSIS. #cdnpoli

Freeland says as of today a bank or other financial services provider will be able to immediately freeze or suspend account without a court order. Says doing so "will be protected against civil liability for actions taken in good faith." #cdnpoli

Fed. govt institutions will have new broad authority to share relevant info with banks and other financial service providers "to ensure we can all work together to put a stop to the funding of these illegal blockades."

"We are today serving notice, if your truck is being used in these illegal blockades, your corporate accounts will be frozen," Freeland says. Says insurance on vehicle will be suspended. "Send your semi-trailers home." #cdnpoli

Missed earlier, Freeland says they're broadening scope of Canada's Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing rules so they include crowdfunding platforms, & payment service providers used. Changes include all transaction forms, including digital, ex. cryptocurrency.
