Here's a thread of today's bill updates. 🧵
New Hampshire HB1651 was reported unfavorably by its committee. This is good news, meaning it is unlikely to proceed further. This bill would classify all trans-affirming medical care provided to minors as child abuse.
Florida HB1557 has a hearing on 2/28 at 10:30 am. This is the famous "Don't Say Gay" bill that prohibits classroom discussions about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary schools.
Arizona HB2161 passed the House. This bill would require that all school records be made available to parents and mandate that schools gain written permission from parents before teaching students about sex, sexuality or gender.
Indiana HB1041 had its amendments fail to be adopted. This is a standard anti-trans sports bill that would ban "biological males" from competing in girls sports. How "biological sex" is to be determined is unclear, leaving opportunities for child abuse.
Tennessee HB2633 was deferred until March 1st. This bill would mandate that school professionals do NOT have to use a student's preferred pronouns if that pronouns does not match the student's "biological sex". "Biological sex" is not defined.
Tennessee SB2696 was placed on the Committee Calendar for March 2nd. This bill would ban all trans-affirming medical care for those under the age of 18, and would also prevent state funds from going to insurance companies that cover transition-related care. It also mandates...
...that any designated reporter must inform guardians, in writing, if their child has a gender identity that does not match their assigned sex at birth.
Tennessee HB2835 was placed on the Committee Calendar for March 1st. This is the "youth health protection act", which would ban trans-affirming medical care for those under the age of 18 or who have not also reached Tanner Stage 5 Development.
Alabama HB322 passed the House. This is a youth bathroom bill that mandates that all school locker rooms, shower rooms and bathrooms must only be used by individuals based on their "biological sex", as defined by original birth certificate.
Missouri HB2734 was introduced. This is an anti-trans sports bill that would mandate that prior Title IX provisions specifically exclude trans women.
Missouri HB2735 was introduced. This is another anti-trans sports bill that mandates that "biological males" not participate in girls' athletics. It does not provide any guidance as to how "biological sex" is to be determined.
Kansas SB484 moved to the Ways and Means Committee. This is an anti-trans sports bill that would ban "biological males" from girls sports. "Biological sex" is not defined in any way and there is no explanation for how it should be determined.
Kansas HB2662 moved to the Appropriations Committee. This bill establishes a "parents bill of rights" which would allow parents to inspect all school curriculum and challenge the value of any material in the school library.
