London Philharmonic playing the Ukrainian National Anthem tonight

Not often that a National Anthem getting the applause but this one did.

#StandWithUkriane

From London
Poignantly the artistic director introduces it saying she is Russian and her husband Ukrainian…and the Prokofiev and Rachmaninov programme links to Ukraine.
And the Ukrainian Chorus Dumka of New York singing their hearts out for Ukraine on Saturday Night Live

Dan Rather

“I end tonight with a prayer of thanks to all those desperately fighting for the future of freedom. Many never expected to be in this position, defending their country & by extension all of us. We who go to bed in safety owe them all a deep debt of gratitude."

‘Yes, He Would’: Fiona Hill on Putin and Nukes - POLITICO

This is so good (in a scary way)

“We are already, she said, in the middle of a third World War, whether we’ve fully grasped it or not.”
politico.com/news/magazine/…
“Sadly, we are treading back through old historical patterns that we said that we would never permit to happen again,” Hill said
Those old historical patterns inc Western businesses who fail to see how they help build a tyrant’s war chest, admirers enamored of an autocrat’s “strength” & politicians’ tendency to point fingers inward for political gain instead of working together for their nation’s security.

“What emerges is not an isolated crisis, but rather part of a continuing strategy since 2000, and which is likely to play out over the next 20–30 years. The current Ukrainian crisis is but one episode in a very long game”
“(This goes) right back to the early manipulation of supplies through the Ukrainian pipeline, to the Crimea annexation, the destabilisation of the Donbas, the aim of Nord Stream to bypass Ukraine (and the Eastern European buyers of Russian gas)…
“…and the power play on the energy contract to Moldova.
All of the above should be a wake-up call not just to NATO and the EU about the military and democratic challenges, but also about the twin energy aspects: energy security and climate change mitigation.”

“The Russian failure is driven by the fact that they’re attempting to conduct a full-scale invasion without the mil operation that it would require, thinking they can avoid most of the fighting. This has led to not only unworkable force employment, but lack of employment.”

🧵⬇️
Important to remember that Russia has not yet deployed anywhere near its full military capacity either in troops or armoury.
Of course it is MUCH harder to”sell” this as a little military operation with happy clappy Ukrainians welcoming their saviours as the bodies, injuries and losses pile up and with many in their troops deployed reluctant to fight with their neighbours.

Very big that Shell is ending its interest its joint interest in Gazprom
27.5% stake in the Sakhalin-2 liquified natural gas facility, its 50% stake in a project to develop the Salym fields in western Siberia and its 50% interest in an exploration project in the Gydan peninsula
Now what about ExxonMobil (XOM), which has been active there for more than 25 years.

Its subsidiary, Exxon Neftegas Limited, has a 30% stake in Sakhalin-1 — a vast oil and natural gas project

Whoopsie

“Speaking to Kadyrov the Rosgvardia deputy describes how when he told his officers “many commanders listened to it with their eyes bulging, barely restrained their emotions”. He also warns many officers worry some of their soldiers will refuse orders in ukraine.”
Hence Western intel had such detailed insights into Russian invasion plans with Kadyrov's commanders updating Kadyrov about war preparations via voice notes.

Maybe that explains the Vindman Kadyrov video that seemed a bit weird given Chechen troops were busy invading Ukraine.
Can anyone translate this article? Seems important @BBCWorld @KyivIndependent

Why Vladimir Putin has already lost this war

“Ukraine is a nation with more than a thousand years of history, and Kyiv was already a major metropolis when Moscow was not even a village. “

Putin knows full well Ukraine is real and independent of Russia theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
He said as much in 2002

“Ukraine is an independent, sovereign nation state and it will choose its own path to peace and security.”

Yet now he chooses to lie to try and justify his war crimes
“Putin’s dream of rebuilding the Russian empire has always rested on the lie that Ukraine isn’t a real nation, that Ukrainians aren’t a real people, and that the inhabitants of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Lviv yearn for Moscow’s rule. That’s a complete lie”

And he miscalculated. Image
