We need the #EuropeanUnion and the #UnitedStates to open up all their registries of land and property to investigative reporters and researchers to be able to look up real estate owned by Putin and his cronies. #Ukraine
The Kremlin and its oligarchs source their lethal power from the obscurity of secret bank accounts and hidden real estate in the West. Unified and open registries of real estate across the EU and the US would considerably expose Russian kleptocrats (and not only) #Kleptocracy
It is high time to massively #OpenData in property registries, unify them, match them against lists of PEPs and their offshores, do #OSINT on the physical locations (as these people tend to cluster) and go back to the data to expose more. #transparency
Property registries are #publicdata but they are not open in too many countries, they are prohibitively expensive to use and clunky. Western governments need to open the raw data to researchers in the #OpenData communities to unify them and perform large scale analysis.
This is not just about posh real estate in London or #Monaco (this would be a great place to start though) but also about vast agricultural lands, vineyards, forests and lakes. This exercise in transparency might prevent future agressions and help #Ukraine right now.
You want to eliminate a big chunk of Putin’s destructive power and take down in the process many other corrupt politicians and organized crime? Perhaps also lower a bit the cost for rent and ownership for locals? Open up registries of property in the West. #OpenData
