During the pandemic, guidance for #OAT was modified around the world, leading to more flexible access to take-home doses for many people treated with #methadone and #buprenorphine. In our new study in @JAMA_current, we evaluated the impact of these changes on patient outcomes.
We looked separately at ppl treated with #methadone and #buprenorphine, stratified by level of take-home doses before the pandemic (daily or weekly). We then examined how more flexible take-home doses were associated with risk of OAT discontinuation, interruption and #overdose.
Impacts were most prominent among methadone recipients, where receiving new or extended take-home doses led to a lower risk of treatment discontinuation/interruption & a similar or lower risk of overdose.
Among those treated with buprenorphine, there were fewer changes; although moving from weekly to at least biweekly dispensing was associated with lower risks of treatment interruption, and importantly, changes were not associated with any increased risk of overdose or death.
The rigidity of OAT programs – particularly methadone – is a commonly cited driver of low retention among people accessing OAT. While these findings have direct implications during the pandemic, they also support continuation of more flexible take-home OAT doses moving forward.
New data on #OpioidDeaths in #Ontario released from the Coroner's Office today. Again, opioid-related deaths continue to climb, with 246 deaths in March 2021 (probable/confirmed)
As we started to see in last month's release, carfentanil involvement continues to grow, contributing to 29 deaths in the first three months of 2021.
Reminder: rates vary by PHU, with huge growth seen in Northern parts of the province ->Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Porcupine, North Bay and Algoma.
My mum was vaccinated at Toronto Congress Centre today. We were all excited and relieved; but I have been horrified to hear about her experience. I’m now fearful that today she was put at a higher risk of being exposed to #COVID19 than at any other point in this pandemic. 1/n
Her appointment was for about 3pm. When she arrived, this was the length of line.
I expected there might be long lines outside...at least it was a beautiful day! ☀️2/n
After an hour she got in. My dad waited outside for her, BUT most other people had their companion go inside with them. While I understand that some people need help from a caregiver, my dad said he was one of only a handful who didn’t go in. This made the crowding even worse 3/n
