An ethical thread on #NoFlyZone

TL;DR: A #NoFlyZoneOverUkraine puts at risk billions of lives to save thousands of lives.

Let's break down why it's irresponsible to support it unless you are Ukrainian.

1/6
If you are Ukrainian, besieged by terror and bombardment, you are ethically entitled to ask for a #NoFlyZone.

It may even be practical - pressure on the world to do more.

But the only sane answer to the request is no. Let's look at why.

2/6
A #noflyzone is a declaration of war against Russia.

Russia has the capacity to destroy you, your family, your country and Western civilization in under an hour.

That's what you are toying with when you tweet: #NoFlyZoneInUkraineNow

3/6
If you are a journalist, advocating for a #noflyzone doesn't disqualify your work, but it does mean you are being a bit of a moron at best, and immorally self indulgent at worst.

Here is an example -

4/6

If a politician advocates for #NoFlyZone, it's a gross professional failure and a dereliction of duty.

Here is an ex politician, which is much less bad -

5/6

So what do you do?

You may argue for a 'safe zone' negotiated with Russia using the threat of yet more sanctions.

But not a #NoFlyZone, the practical result of which may anyway be the devastation of Ukraine as NATO and Russian air forces clash over its skies.

What radical medical mistrust in the patient as a teller of her experience does, is make the patient question herself. Because she knows her experience is real, she’ll only question herself a bit. But that bit matters, because it puts in doubt that up is up and down is down.
Doubting an obvious truth about your body is more conducive to trauma than healing.
The BPS argument says that ME patients questioning their illness is a good thing. But this is a sleight of hand. What it really asks isn’t that patients question their illness, but that they question their sense of reality.

Don't be freaked out by this. The chances that President Biden has the intel that Putin is about to invade are spectacularly low. @McFaul's own earlier remark, that not even the people close to Putin know what will happen next, remains the best judgement.

#UkraineConflict 1/3
The West's assertion that Putin is about to invade is a counter narrative: we can debate whether it's successful or not.

But it's most likely not based on real intelligence.

Western journalists have interpreted it as information, but it's not. It's a narrative war.

2/3
The Russians are actually thrown by this narrative and its amplification by Western media.

It violates their principle: talk to us, because we are crazy.

The Russians are trying to respond with a counter counter narrative - but unsuccessfully.

The REAL reason Putin is preparing for war in Ukraine.

MEGATHREAD.

1/56
There's been much hysteria in the British & US press about what Putin is up to on the Ukrainian border.

We've got to calm down: to understand what's going on we have to look behind the walls of the Kremlin.

#UkraineInvasion #UkraineCrisis

2/56
The thing that everyone misses are the dynamics behind the scenes in Moscow:

What is counter intuitive for us in the West to understand is that what's playing out right now is the slow end of the Putin regime as we know it.

Thread on volatility and 'radical unsafety' in ME.

People with ME are labile - they can feel OK-ish at 3pm, deathly at 6pm, and OK-ish again at 9pm.

But let's talk about a different kind of volatility - one that #pwME and now #longcovid people fear the most.

1/9
It's the volatility of sliding from 'moderate' to 'severe' ME over the course of a week and staying severe indefinitely.

I actually think there are 3 fears involved here.

2/9
First, there is the fear that you will get much worse, suffer more, and be more disabled.

This happens to patients frequently enough.

Sometimes there is a trigger, sometimes - and this can be especially scary - there isn't a perceived trigger.

If you have ME, finding a doctor can be really hard.

Sadly, this is still true in 2021. ME patients joke that the situation hasn't changed much since 1921 or 1521!

I am working on a new relationship with a doctor. Here is a thread with my perspective. 1/16

#pwME
It's a process in time. But, how do I decide if the relationship is workable, or even a success?

My first criteria is to get to a point where common misconceptions about ME no longer recur.

2/16
Yesterday, at the doctor's office, the oft repeated line came up: 'but don't all illnesses have an emotional component?'

Predictably, it came up when I discussed the psychiatric 'take over' of ME, which patients rightly regard as an affront to reality and justice.
