Don't be freaked out by this. The chances that President Biden has the intel that Putin is about to invade are spectacularly low. @McFaul's own earlier remark, that not even the people close to Putin know what will happen next, remains the best judgement.

#UkraineConflict 1/3
The West's assertion that Putin is about to invade is a counter narrative: we can debate whether it's successful or not.

But it's most likely not based on real intelligence.

Western journalists have interpreted it as information, but it's not. It's a narrative war.

2/3
The Russians are actually thrown by this narrative and its amplification by Western media.

It violates their principle: talk to us, because we are crazy.

The Russians are trying to respond with a counter counter narrative - but unsuccessfully.

3/3

And what does the Russian response look like?

Like this. A real evacuation on the basis of a faked threat.

Innocent people are being crammed into buses and taken to the Rostov area, where nothing awaits them, just to create a picture for Russia TV

What radical medical mistrust in the patient as a teller of her experience does, is make the patient question herself. Because she knows her experience is real, she’ll only question herself a bit. But that bit matters, because it puts in doubt that up is up and down is down.
Doubting an obvious truth about your body is more conducive to trauma than healing.
The BPS argument says that ME patients questioning their illness is a good thing. But this is a sleight of hand. What it really asks isn’t that patients question their illness, but that they question their sense of reality.

UPDATE ON THE UKRAINE CRISIS.

What's going on?

Quick thread. 1/6

#Ukraine #UkraineConflict
Are maps like this one, which look like a 7 year old's drawing of operation Barbarossa, information or misinformation?

They are misinformation.

Journalism taking cue from them is, as @mtaibbi says, 'hack stenography'.

So, what's really going on?

2/6

Western govts are countering Kremlin threats of war and Kremlin misinformation with misinformation (or hype) of their on.

'Imminent war' is partly hysteria and partly a gambit in an information war.

What are the real chances of full scale war?

The REAL reason Putin is preparing for war in Ukraine.

MEGATHREAD.

#UkraineInvasion #UkraineCrisis

1/56
There's been much hysteria in the British & US press about what Putin is up to on the Ukrainian border.

We've got to calm down: to understand what's going on we have to look behind the walls of the Kremlin.

#UkraineInvasion #UkraineCrisis

2/56
The thing that everyone misses are the dynamics behind the scenes in Moscow:

What is counter intuitive for us in the West to understand is that what's playing out right now is the slow end of the Putin regime as we know it.

Thread on volatility and 'radical unsafety' in ME.

People with ME are labile - they can feel OK-ish at 3pm, deathly at 6pm, and OK-ish again at 9pm.

But let's talk about a different kind of volatility - one that #pwME and now #longcovid people fear the most.

1/9
It's the volatility of sliding from 'moderate' to 'severe' ME over the course of a week and staying severe indefinitely.

I actually think there are 3 fears involved here.

2/9
First, there is the fear that you will get much worse, suffer more, and be more disabled.

This happens to patients frequently enough.

Sometimes there is a trigger, sometimes - and this can be especially scary - there isn't a perceived trigger.

If you have ME, finding a doctor can be really hard.

Sadly, this is still true in 2021. ME patients joke that the situation hasn't changed much since 1921 or 1521!

I am working on a new relationship with a doctor. Here is a thread with my perspective. 1/16

#pwME
It's a process in time. But, how do I decide if the relationship is workable, or even a success?

My first criteria is to get to a point where common misconceptions about ME no longer recur.

2/16
Yesterday, at the doctor's office, the oft repeated line came up: 'but don't all illnesses have an emotional component?'

Predictably, it came up when I discussed the psychiatric 'take over' of ME, which patients rightly regard as an affront to reality and justice.

Is there room for ultra alarmism in the climate movement?

A thread and a video.

1/9 #ClimateCrisis
Recently, @MichaelEMann has criticised @dwallacewells & @GreenRupertRead for being more alarmist and much more alarmist than him (respectively).

He argues that if you are too alarmist, people may disengage and this could lead to inaction.

Does this argument make sense?

2/9
Let's take the more extreme alarmist position, from
@GreenRupertRead.

Rupert Read worries and talks about the possibility of societal collapse in Western countries. I don't share this.

But is his alarmism damaging to the climate movement?
