My Project Management journey!
I just stated the Google Project Management: Professional Certificate through Coursera and I have decided to update my learning journey, so this will be a thread of my progress. #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech #projectmanagement #baddiesintech
Day 1
Course: Foundations of Project Management
Now I have basic understanding of project management and what a project manager does (planning and organizing, managing tasks, budgeting and controlling costs).
I also learnt that Project management skills are transferable as project managers work in different industries so the skills learnt in one industry can be applied in others. #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #baddiesintech
A project is temporary in that it has a defined beginning and end in time, and therefore defined scope and resources. A project manager adds value to the team through Prioritization, Delegation, and Effective communication. #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
One of the most important skills for project management skills is communication. #projectmanagement
Day 2: A project manager isn’t always the direct manager of the people working on a project team.
It is not a project manager job to be an expert on everything, rather it is the project manager responsibility to guide the team and make sure they have the support that they need.
As a project manager, you are likely to work with cross functional teams (team members who have different background and expertise but are working towards the successful completion of the project). #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #Project #baddiesintech
Managing cross functional teams require the project manager to: clarify the goals of the project, get team members with the right skills, measure team progress and recognize team members efforts. #projectmanagement
Day 3: Today I learnt about the core skills necessary for successfully project management and they are; Enabling decision making, communicating and escalating risks, flexibility and strong organizational skills. #googleprojectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #projectmanagement
As a project manager you should make the decision making process of the project collaborative, know how to give constructive feedback, be flexible and have the ability to handle ambiguity.
#googleprojectmanagement #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #baddiesintech
Every project has a life cycle and the main phases of a project life cycle are initiate the project ,make a plan for how you will meet the goals of your project, execute & complete tasks and finally, close the project. #projectmanagement #googleprojectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
It is important to close the project so the team have a moment to celebrate all of their hard work. Closing the project is also a chance to evaluate how the project went and make note of what worked and what didn't so you can plan better for next time. #googleprojectmanagement
Day 4: Learnt about the main Project management methodologies; Waterfall and Agile. Waterfall has a linear approach which means the previous task has to be completed before the next phase can begin. The Agile method is more flexible and tasks are completed in iterations.
Another PMM is the Six sigma approach. The six sigma approach always focus on the customer and there are five phases involved. They are; Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC). #googleprojectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #projectmanagement
Also learnt about how understanding an organization’s structure and culture can impact the way you plan and manage your project.
Types of organization structure: The classic and Matrix structure.
#googleprojectmanagement #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
The classic structure follows the traditional top down system of reporting and has a clear chain of command. In a matrix structure, teams report to multiple leaders.#googleprojectmanagement #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
Completed course 1: Foundations of Project Management and I enjoyed every bit of this course🥳
Day 5
Course:Project Initiation
There are several key components of initiation for a successful project: goals of the project, scope (this defines what need to be done to complete the project), deliverables, success criteria, stakeholders and resources. #googleprojectmanagement
Creating a project charter is the next phase once you've established your goals, scope, deliverables, success criteria, stakeholders, and resources. A project charter is a document that contains all the details of the project. #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech
Day 6: Cost-benefit analysis is the process of adding up the expected value of a project, the benefits and comparing them to the dollar costs. Performing a cost benefit analysis can help can minimize risks and maximize gains for projects and organizations. #womenintech
Performing a cost-benefit analysis can help you and your stakeholders determine if it makes sense to take on a new project by evaluating if its benefits outweigh its costs. The process of calculating costs and benefits is called calculating return on investment(ROI). #womenintech
Day 7: Learnt about making SMART goals and how important it is to make sure your stakeholders and team are all clear on the project goals to avoid running into issues later on.Goals and deliverables of the project need to be well defined before embarking on a project #womenintech
SMART goals are: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time bound. Goals define the destination that you want to reach.
#googleprojectmanagement #projectmanagement #womenintech #BlackTechTwitter
Day 8: Project OKRs( Objective and Key Results) combine a goal and a metric to determine a measurable outcome.
Project scope are boundaries of a project and it is important to define the project scope during the initial planning stage. #googleprojectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
In managing the project scope, the Triple constraint Model can be used : scope, time and cost. The scope of a project should be documented and made available to everyone involved in the project throughout the duration of the project to make sure everyone is clear. #womenintech
Also learnt about the difference between project launch and project landing and that as project managers the goal is not to launch the project but to land it.Project landing means the project meets the success criteria set at the beginning of the project. #googleprojectmanagement
Day 9: When choosing a project team, you should consider the required roles, team size, necessary skills, availability and motivation.
And when you are assigned team members for a project, you work with what you are given to achieve the desired outcome. #BlackTechTwitter
It is important to do the stakeholder analysis, determine the level of interest and influence of each stakeholder in order to understand when and how to involve them. The stakeholders with high level of influence but low interest you will want to meet their needs.#BlackTechTwitter
Stakeholders with high interest but low influence, should be updated about the project. And then we have the Key players of the project, you will want to manage them closely and constantly communicate with them. #projectmanager #womenintech #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
Day 10: RACI chart clarifies each person’s role on your project. The four components of a RACI chart: Responsible- who gets the work done
Accountable- who makes sure the work is done
Consulted- who gives input or feedback
Informed-who needs to know the outcome.#BlackTechTwitter
Day 11: Project documentation is really important because it helps set the stage for the project and ensures transparency. Project documentation should be made available to everyone involved in the project to ensure clear communication. #BlackTechTwitter #projectmanager
Project proposal and project charter are project documents. A project proposal is created earlier in the project life cycle than the project charter and it outlines everything needed to know to initiate a project. #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech #projectmanagement #baddiesintech
A project charter clearly defines the key details of the project and serves a reference throughout the life of a project.Learnt about the key informations that should be included in a project charter and how to develop a project charter. #googleprojectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
Day 12: Project management tools help to track task deadlines, keep stakeholders informed, provide visibility and transparency to others, manage a budget, create helpful diagrams. #BlackTechTwitter #googleprojectmanagement #womenintech #projectmanager
Common project management tools: Scheduling & work management software and tools for productivity and collaboration.
Tools for productivity are best for small project and fewer tasks and team. Scheduling &work management software is better for bigger projects. #BlackTechTwitter
Day 13:Rounding up course 2 and I have submitted my peer-graded assignment.
#googleprojectmanagement #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech
Course 2: Project Initiation✅
Learned about how important it is to determine your project scope, project goals and deliverables, how to measure project success by creating success criteria, define project roles and responsibilities, choosing the right team #projectmanagement
Learned how to create stakeholders analysis, track team’s accountability using RACI chart and how to develop a project charter. So yeah, I have basic skills for project initiation✅. #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech #baddiesintech #googleprojectmanagement
Day 14: Course 3- Project planning
Planning is the next phase of a project life cycle. As a project manager, you will spend the planning phase building the schedule, setting the budget and preparing the risk management plan. #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech
Day 15: Project planning builds teamwork which will help push the project across the finish line. Learned about the difference between project milestones and tasks and why it is important to set milestones. Project milestones helps keep your project on track. #projectmanagement
Day 16: A major component of the planning phase is the creation of a work breakdown structure (WBS) which gives you a visual representation of a project and the tasks required to deliver each milestone. #googleprojectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech
A project plan includes the following components: Tasks, milestones, people, documentation (RACI chart, charter, budget) and time.
Time estimation, effort estimation, and buffers can help in building realistic plans to reach the project goal.#projectmanagement #womenintech
A buffer is extra time added to the end of a task or a project to account for unexpected delays in work progress. There are two types of buffers: Task buffers and project buffers. Being on the lookout for “what-ifs” is a key project management skill. #projectmanagement
Day 17: After estimating the amount of time required to complete a project, the next step is to determine if you have the right number of people to get the work done and this can be done using the technique called Capacity planning. #projectmgt #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech
Project plan best practices include; carefully review deliverables, milestones and tasks, give yourself time to plan, recognize and plan for the inevitable, stay curious and champion your plan. #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech
Day 18: Switched to watching YouTube videos to have a better understanding of how to use some project management tools. #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech

Day 20: As a project manager, you'll use techniques like researching historical data, leveraging experts, the bottom-up approach, confirming accuracy, and setting your baseline when creating a budget. #googleprojectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech
Day 21: Learned about the procurement process of a project: the initiation stage, selecting, contract writing, control( making payments and ensuring quality) and completing stage which involves measuring your project success.
#projectmanagement #womenintech #blacktechtwitter
Common procurement documentation such as;
- NDAs ( Non-Disclosure Agreements) created at the initiation phase,
-RFP (Request for Proposal) created during the selection phase, and
-SOW (Statement of Work) created in the contracting phase.
#projectmanagement #baddiesintech
Day 22: Risk management
I was introduced to risk management and the steps involved: Identify the risk, analyze the risk, evaluate the risk, treat the risk, maintain and control the risk.
Brainstorming is a technique for identifying risks. #productmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
Tools like risk register, a probability and impact matrix and a risk management plan can be used to identify, assess and document risks. Risk mitigating strategies include: Avoid it, accept it, reduce or control it, transfer it. #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech #projectmanagement
Day 23: Learned about communication strategies, tips for effective communication, and the best practices for building a communication plan. #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech
Day 24: Learned about the value of documentation, how it makes communication quicker, easier and more streamlined because everyone knows where to find any information they need. Documentation also provides visibility and accountability. #BlackTechTwitter #projectmanagement
Day 25: Still on documentation, one big benefit of setting up the project plans in a centralized and clearly labeled place is: Continuity, so even if you're not present, the project can carry on. Documentation optimizes workflow and reduces duplicate work. #projectmanagement
As a project manager, it is also important to determine what kind of information to share with whom and when. Focus on the key information related to what specific individuals need to know. #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech
Day 26: Trying to round off course 3 by completing my assignments and reviewing all i learned in this course. #googleprojectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter

#BaddiesInTech #BlackTechTwitter
Day 29: Course 4- Project Execution
During the execution phase, it is important to keep tabs on project progress by tracking and measurement. Tracking makes key project information transparent, recognize risks and issues that can derail your progress.
#Projectmanagement
Day 30: Still on tracking, tracking helps build confidence that the project is set to be delivered on time, in-scope and within budget. Commonly tracked items include; project schedule, status of key tasks, progress towards milestones, costs, changes and risks to the project.
Learned about tracking methods- Gantt charts, roadmaps, and burndown charts.
Gantt charts are useful for projects with many dependencies, roadmaps are useful for tracking of large milestones, and burn down charts are better for projects where finishing on time is the top priority
Day 31: When managing a project, it's important to fulfill the outlined requirements for the deliverable and meet the customer's standards of quality. Concepts of quality management are:quality standards, quality planning, quality assurance, and quality control. #Projectmanagement
Common methods of measuring customer satisfaction are feedback surveys and user acceptance tests.
User acceptance tests helps a business make sure that a product works for its users and it takes place at the final stage of a product's development, right before the launch.
Day 32: Learned about the frameworks used when working through continuous improvement, DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve and control) and PCDA- focuses on identifying a problem, fixing the issue, assessing whether the fix was successful and fine-tuning the fix.
One way to ensure continuous improvement is to conduct a retrospective. Conducting a retrospective encourages team building, facilitate improve collaboration, promote positive changes in future processes. #Projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech
When conducting a retrospective, ensure the discussion is blameless (switching from “you” to “we” language) and reflect on positive aspects of the project as well as the negative. #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter #womenintech
Day 33: Learned about the value of gathering data as a project manager such as; make better decisions, solve problems, understand performance, improve processes and understand your users. After gathering data, the next thing is to analyze the data. #BlackTechTwitter
The six steps of data analysis: Ask, prepare, process, analyze, share and act. The common data metrics for project management include the productivity, quality, adoption and engagement metrics. #DataAnalytics
Day 34: After collecting and analyzing the data, the next step is to present the data. Presenting is a powerful way to communicate your ideas and support your decisions throughout the project journey. #projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
There are six main steps to presenting data, first define your audience, collect the data, filter and analyze the data, choose a visual representation, shape the story and finally, gather your feedback. Also learned about ways to give an effective and accessible presentation.
Day 35: Learned about the stages of team development, the necessity of project teamwork, the factors that impact team effectiveness and how to build a high-functioning team. Teamwork fosters creativity and encourages accountability. #Projectmanagement
Day 36: Learned about some common project management tools that are helpful for communicating with your team. Some of these include: e-mail and messaging, in-person meetings, video conferencing, and work management and collaboration tools. #Projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
Also learned about the importance of effective meetings, how to create a meeting agenda, and the common types of meetings. There are four general types of project management meetings, project kick-off, status updates, stakeholder reviews, and project reviews. #BlackTechTwitter
Day 37: Completing a project and closing a project are two very different things. Closing a project is important because it ensures that nothing has fallen through the cracks. #Projectmanagement #womenintech
Day 38: Completed Course 4: Project Execution✅
Day 39: Course 5- Agile Project Management
Agile refers to flexibility and the willingness and ability to change and adapt. In Agile project management, the project processes are repeated often many times during the life cycle of the project. #Projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
Day 40: Agile is a highly collaborative approach suited for very complex and competitive projects. Learned about the four values and 12 principles of the Agile Manifesto. #projectmanagement
The 4 values of the Agile Manifesto

-Individuals and interactions over processes and tools

-Working software over comprehensive documentation

-Customer collaboration over contract negotiation

-Responding to change over following a plan.
#BlackTechTwitter #Projectmanagement
Day 41: Learned about Agile project management frameworks: Kanban, Extreme programming(XP), Lean and Scrum.
The pillars of scrum are transparency, inspection and adaptation. The five values of scrum: commitment, courage, focus, openness and respect.#BlackTechTwitter #ProjectMgmt
Day 42: Learned about the essential scrum roles, the Scrum Master, who ensures the team builds the thing fast; the Product Owner, who is in charge of building the right thing; and the Development Team, whose role is to ensure the team builds the thing right
#BlackTechTwitter
Day 43: Learned about building a Product Backlog, writing user stories and the components of user stories. Although the Product Backlog is owned and adjusted by the product owner, the team work together to keep the living document up to date. #Projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
Day 44: Finished module 3 today and I completed the tasks on my to-do list 😊…It felt really great crossing them off
Day 45: I did not do much today just watched a video about the five important Scrum events, the Sprint, Sprint Planning, the Daily Scrum, the Sprint Review, and Sprint Retrospective.Learned about when each of these take place and the purpose. #Projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
Day 46: The number one Agile principal is to satisfy customers by delivering valuable product. Three ways to maximize value driven delivery is to: Build the right thing, build the thing right, and run it right. #Projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
One way to help teams make sure they are staying focused is by following a value roadmap.
A value roadmap has three components: a product vision, a product roadmap, and release plans. #Projectmanagement
Day 47: Almost done with this course on Agile Project Management. Learned about coaching an Agile team. As a coach, you will design the "plays" with the team, provide feedback to the team and lastly celebrate and learn with the team.
Day 48: Completed course 5 on Agile Project management ✅ and Agile is more than just the sprints and daily stand up. It enables customer collaboration and value delivery. Also includes self organizing teams. #Projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter
Day 49: Started course 6 today, the Capstone course which is basically about me applying all the Project Management skills I have learned from course 1-5. #Projectmanagement #BlackTechTwitter

Day 51: Practiced creating a project plan and time estimation for tasks. Learned about the 3 point estimation technique that uses the Optimistic, Pessimistic and Most likely calculations. #Projectmanagement
Day 52: As a Project manager, practicing empathy is important when negotiating and communicating in general. Listen with curiosity, repeat what you think you heard, connect with their experience, and avoid distractions are some tips for bringing empathy to your conversations.
Day 53: Reviewed the key quality management concepts, the importance and purpose of maintaining project quality. Benefits of creating a quality management plan include delivering a quality product, decreasing overhead, and increasing collaboration and ongoing reviews.
Day 54: Learned about evaluating quality standards to ensure that the project is achieving the required level of quality. Evaluation questions and survey questions are different.
An evaluation question is a key question about the outcomes, impact, and/or effectiveness of a project, whereas a survey question is designed to collect data, which can help answer the evaluation questions.
Day 55: Learned about the strategies to facilitate a productive retrospective by encouraging participation, accountability and positivity. Technique for addressing negatively include:set a positive tone at the start of the meeting, ask team individually to share their thoughts.
Day 56: Completed week 3… Going into the final week of this course 🤩
Day 57: This is the first time I am updating this thread by this time 😂. Submitted my last assignment for this course and hopefully I get a grade update today😌
Day 58: Course- Introduction to Scrum Master Training
Agile is a broader term and is not just one methodology, it's
actually a family of methodologies. Includes Scrum, Lean, XP, DevOps, Release on-Demand and more. Learned about the Agile manifesto values and principles. #Scrum
Day 59:Agile Economy- there are various levels of economics including release-level economics, sprint-level economics, and product backlog economics. Product Owners consistently use economic trade-offs in their decision making. Learned about the agile myths and benefits. #Agile
Day 60: A Scrum Master is the facilitator of the Scrum process. The primary mission of the Scrum Master is to coach the team through the Scrum process to ensure that they deliver a working solution increment at the end of the sprint. #ScrumMaster
A Scrum Master is a servant leader. Scrum Master soft skills include: creativity, dealing with conflict, persuasion, a great collaborator, adaptive and emotional intelligence.
Day 61: Learned about the scrum events and what happens during each meeting and also the different Agile artifacts, the Product Increment and Product Vision, Product, Release and Sprint backlogs. #Scrum
Day 62: Completed the course Introduction to Scrum Master Training✅.
Day 63: Course- Scrum Methodologies: User stories are a short descriptions of user functionality or some type of capability that a user needs. Stories are written by the team. The product owner must approve all stories, and they must be formalized and added to the product backlog
There is the acceptance criteria that lets us know the story has been properly implemented, and testers use that acceptance criteria as a framework for their test case. Also, there is the INVEST story criteria. #Scrum
Day 64: I was not able to do much today, I had other engagements but I studied the module on planning and estimating story points. Collaboration is the base technique in estimating stories. The team needs to discuss and agree on story estimates. #Scrum
Day 65/66: Velocity is a planning tool, it is the number of story points a team can complete in a sprint. Velocity is influenced by product, work type and team size. Learned about the backlog refinement process and the MoScoW method of backlog prioritization. #Scrum
The MoSCoW method of Backlog Prioritization in based on:
Must have
Should have
Could have
Won't have
Day 67: Scrum reports involved data that track how the team is doing with the Scrum process and also provides direction related to the team's improvement. We have the burndown chart, burnup chart, velocity chart.
Day 68: Learned about Work Management in Scrum. A great way to manage our work is something called work in progress limits. WIP limits help us focus on just the right amount of tasks in order to get them ready for the next step in the workflow and ultimately to done. #Scrum
Having a lot of stories in flight at one time really is not the best. It may sound like you are doing a lot, but the idea really is to get the stories to done.

Completed the course on Scrum Methodologies ✅
Day 69: Course- Scaling Agile and the Team-of-Teams

Scaling Agile, getting executive buy-in and making sure that all teams are on board is easier said than done as it is often met with resistance. #Agile
It is nice to present Agile as the “golden ticket” that will fix all problems, it’s also important to acknowledge the potential weaknesses. The fear is that because the project is not planned till the very last detail upfront, delivering a successful product will be impossible.
Using an Agile development process, you will get a product that is focused on delivering value to customers. Customer Satisfaction is one of the advantages that scrum and scale scrum gives us. #Scrum
Day 70: In Agile, testing is done by the testing team and it is continuous. So, instead of waiting for development to be completed before testing begins, testing happens continuously as features are added. One thing that is going to help greatly is automated testing.
Day 71: Lately, the Agile emphasis has been on software development. However, all the same Agile practices apply to hardware and device development as well. A hardware development does proceed slower and defects in hardware are more difficult to detect and take longer to resolve
The solution is that, similar to software, hardware teams need to architect a solution for building hardware incrementally.
Day 72 & 73: This module is about the working solution that is going to be delivered, a hardware or software solution. Hardware emulation supports
continuous testing. Learned about challenges and good practices when developing combined hardware and software solutions.
Day 74: Completed the Scrum Master Certification course on Coursera. Taking this course has helped me gain knowledge of Agile practices, and also get acquainted with Scrum fundamentals and principles along with the knowledge to implement Scrum best practices seamlessly.
Image
Day 75: Spent the day learning how to use @asana for project management. Asana is a work management platform that helps teams plan and coordinate their work from daily tasks to strategic initiatives.
Asana is great for building project plans, assigning tasks, automating workflows, tracking progress, and communicating with stakeholders.
Here is a link to a video on how to get started on Asana:
Day 76: I started reading this book today.
It was recommended as one of the best developmental books for Project Managers and just about any professional looking to get more done with less stress. Image
Day 77: Hard (Tech) skills are important as you have to be able to "do your job” but pairing them with your soft skills will make you more valuable.

This is why I enrolled in a course to help build my soft skills in leading and managing teams.

Course: Leading People and Teams
Soft skills such as Communication, motivation, influencing, leadership, negotiation, decision making are necessary for project managers to perform their managerial duties.
Day 78: Visionary Leadership
According to research, the leader of a team accounts for 31% of whether that team performs well or not.

3 important behaviors of a leader:
-Create and communicate a shared vision
- Structure the team
-Show consideration for individual team members.
To create your vision, you should answer the three questions;
1. Why do we do what we do?
2. What does success look like?
3. How must we act to ensure success?
Day 79: As a leader, one important role is to set clear goals and expectations. Goals increase performance because they;
-Direct effort and attention
-Energize and motivate
-Increase persistence of effort
-Discover and use task-relevant knowledge and strategies
Day 80: Setting Effective Goals
- Set specific and measurable goals with clear timelines
-Understand that the goals should align with the overall strategy and vision of the organization
-Allow for skill variety and autonomy
-Recognize that stretch goals lowers satisfaction.
Day 81: Learned how to important it is to align rewards with behavior in order to deliver effective feedback to
drive performance in a team.
By aligning rewards and behaviors, we can reinforce and encourage behaviors we want to see on our teams.
And by the same token, eliminate behaviors we don't want to see on our teams.

-Also by aligning rewards and behaviors, we can help people maintain high levels of motivation at work. Therefore enabling them to unlock their full potential.
Day 82: Influencing is a critical interpersonal skill for project managers.
The most obvious target for pure application of influencing techniques is with project stakeholders who are not subject to the project manager’s authority.
Day 83: I am really enjoying this module which is about Influencing people. Also I am learning how to build and maintain high-quality relationships to maximize my informal power and ability to influence others and how to distinguish between influence and manipulation
Day 84/85: Team size has an impact on team functioning and performance.
These are some reasons why larger teams are preferred:
-More capabilities
-More resources
-More information and input
-More ideas and possible solutions
Smaller teams
-are more cohesive
-higher member satisfaction
-Faster decision making,consensus
-more effective individual contribution

Ultimately, when deciding your team size, you want to consider the task structure and what is needed from your team. Satisfaction/Effectiveness
Day 86: Key concepts in designing your team; team size, composition, diversity of personalities and values, and goals. In addition, you must determine how best to structure your team, specifically how to structure decision making, rewards, and roles.
