1/8 @KofmanMichael has a great thread on the shortfalls of the Russian military. He is missing some key items which I believe require some investigation and discussion.
2/10
It has been said that "He who controls the sky controls the battlefield". This has been true since the mid 1930s as modern warfare began to evolve. There are limits to airpower. We learned this during the Vietnam conflict. Air assets cannot occupy real-estate.
3/10
A lot has been written and postulated about Russias miserable performance in the air. On paper the Russians airforce (VKS) is impressive. Watching the VKS performance I was less than impressed.
4/10
My suspicions on the VKS capability were proven true I believe by watching the battles unfold in Ukraine. Russia seems incapable of launching complex and coordinated air operations. They launch planes singly or in pairs. Rarely sending up multiple sorties at once.
5/10
Some have theorized the VKS fears losses. That theory is false, as the VKS is suffering staggering losses. This is not about them holding back assets in reserve or part of some grand strategy. The VKS is conducting the war this way because this is all it is capable of.
6/10
The VKS seems to have almost AWACs capabilities nor are we seeing any Russian Interceptors being sent up to engage Ukrainian fighters. The other items worth mentioning are leadership, morale and discipline.
7/10
So far the Russian soldiers are behaving poorly. We have seen looting, rape, and the killing of civilians. Historically large conscript armies, with poor leadership have behaved this way. I can cite many examples from history, but that is beyond the scope of this thread.
8/10
The average Russian conscript has little training and has low morale. Desertions are occurring as well as the deliberate sabotage of their own equipment. Some of this is very reminiscent of the Imperial Russian Army in WW1.
9/10
Russia does possess a professional officer corps but they can't seem to coordinate their ground forces into sort of cohesion. They are making huge tactical errors on the ground. They appear to be using the old Soviet playbook on employing their heavy divisions.
10/10
As Russia continues to lose its officers in combat (4 Generals to date) more and more less experienced officers will be used. More and more mistakes will be made further eroding morale.

A loss of a qualified officer can be far more devastating on the Battlefield then the loss of any weapon system. Russia has a large conscript army. Quality NCOs are very important to any army. Quality officers are also equally important.
3/10
The constant loss of high level level officers for Russia is going to be devastating. For comparison, in all of the USAs military engagements the US has only lost 1 General to the enemy since 1968. The Last general was in 2014.
