The @EU_Commission launched its #REPowerEU communication. It proposes how πͺπΊ can become independent from #Russia'sπ·πΊ fossil fuels before 2030.
Omitting #nuclear is a grave mistake. Without it, the Commission can't deliver on its promises. A thread 𧡠by @AndreiGoicea (1/12)
The #REPowerEU communication proposes solutions to 3 incredibly urgent issues which will continue to impact our economy negatively now + in the future.
The issues are:
1. #Affordability, there must be a concentrated effort to curb high energy prices for consumers and industry.
2. Energy sovereignty, our access to energy must not be disrupted by external geopolitical developments
3. Decarbonisation, relating to the proposed measures of the EU Green Deal, and the Fit for 55 package in particular
A balanced approach is needed to deal with all 3 equally!
The @EU_Commission is hedging its bets entirely on the massive deployment of renewables and stronger energy efficiency measures in order to achieve decarbonisation targets.
Unfortunately, their proposed solutions do not adequately address all three of the aforementioned points.
On affordability, renewables will increase costs for consumers. They don't work when βοΈ doesn't shine and π¬ doesn't blow.
Therefore, they need complementary solutions (e.g. storage or hydrogen for back-up purposes). These solutions aren't technologically or economically mature.
On energy sovereignty, renewables are (as mentioned earlier) weather dependant. When they can't produce energy it will need to be imported, meaning πͺπΊ is still reliant on energy imports.
Raw materials also pose an issue; some countries have a 'quasi-monopoly' on key materials.
On decarbonisation, variable renewables cannot meet demand for energy 24/7.
Because the Commission has not adequately prepared for a low-carbon, complimentary solution to renewables, #Europe will continue to burn fossil fuels.
