My Product Manager Operating System (PMOS) - Part 3

7 templates and frameworks that have helped me lead #prodmgmt discovery and execution over the last 10+ years.

PRDs, Project Briefs, and more from Asana, Square, Figma, and more.

A thread 🧵
PRDs

There's debate in the Product community whether or not PRDs are still relevant.

As @johncutlefish points out, there is A LOT of other stuff that needs to happen before a PRD makes sense.

But they do matter.

@johncutlefish Simple PRD

The key is to keep it short and simple.

This template by @lennysan via @GergelyOrosz is a good start.

@johncutlefish @lennysan @GergelyOrosz Execution PRD

Most of product is execution.

This PRD from @kevinyien builds on the basics and adds in focus on alignment and cross-functional dependencies.

@johncutlefish @lennysan @GergelyOrosz @kevinyien @tapuzed Project Brief

This Project Brief used by Asana is an alternative to PRD.

It's useful when you need to get approval to work on a product/feature and just need to quickly summarize.

Most useful in organizations without a modern product management function.
@johncutlefish @lennysan @GergelyOrosz @kevinyien @tapuzed Retrospective

Continuous improvement is a key part of product development.

Anytime you finish up a project, release, or launch, assemble the team to figure out:

- What went well?
- What didn’t go well?
- Ideas for improvement
- Actions

Not doing can be a huge red flag 🚩
@johncutlefish @lennysan @GergelyOrosz @kevinyien @tapuzed Interview Plan

Talking to users is one of the highest ROI activities a product manager can do.

A good interview plan makes it feel seamless

I dig into that here ⬇️

@johncutlefish @lennysan @GergelyOrosz @kevinyien @tapuzed Interview Tracker

Keep the notes, transcriptions, and recordings in one place.

High probability you'll want to reference it later, or hire a new teammate that can learn a lot from your past efforts.
@johncutlefish @lennysan @GergelyOrosz @kevinyien @tapuzed Any other PRD, project brief, or similar templates you find helpful?

The Product Manager Operating System - Part 2

8 templates and frameworks. This time focused on Product Strategy

Inspired by Netflix, Google, Shopify, and more.

🧵
So what is Product Strategy?

It can feel nebulous, but it's a high-level approach you're taking to achieve your business goals.

An art - not a science.

@gibsonbiddle of Netflix fame has an amazing 13-part deep dive.

@gibsonbiddle Product Mission & Vision 👁

Why the product exists in a short, inspiring statement.

Such as:

- IKEA: To create a better everyday life for the many people.
- Shopify: Make commerce better for everyone, so businesses can focus on what they do best: building and selling products

What do I actually want out of the Product Manager Operating System (PMOS)

Thinking out loud about #prodmgmt, #buildinpublic, solopreneurship, and more. ⬇️
I started the year doing two things:

1. Snowboarding 🏂
2. Exploring what's next professionally 👨🏼‍💻

I did a lot of #1, now I'm refocusing on #2.
While exploring new roles, I've had a growing desire to have a toolkit that I can take with me from job to job.

Every role is unique. There's no copy and paste option.

But that doesn't mean experience and tools can't be transferred.

I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

My Product Manager Operating System (PMOS)

The 9 templates and frameworks I've found super valuable in 10+ years of building and growing products.

Adopted from Basecamp, Amazon, and more.

A thread 🧵
The goals of a Product Manager Operating System (PMOS)

- Toolkit that can be applied to any role (with some situational tweaks)
- Help to quickly understand the product environment
- Built in ready to use, highly collaborative apps like Notion & Figma.

Let's dive in 👇
Business Model Canvas

Popular in the lean startup world. Also REALLY useful to understand how and why a business does what it does. Image

First product hire at a startup?

I've been there.

Here's 9 tips for your first 30 days.

🧵
1/ Know what you signed up for.

@Jenyangwong has 5 things to expect.

@Jenyangwong 2/ Understand WHY you were hired.

You might think you know already. Time to confirm.

@shreyas's product leader categories can help structure the conversation, even if you aren't in a people leader role.

Product Twitter is very vocal about the downsides of #prodmgmt.

Every job has its frustrations. But it's not all bad.

Here's 9 reasons why product is a great career path.
1/ Challenging

You don't get into product to coast.

The challenges make it rewarding. This makes it fun.
2/ Collaborative

You get to work with every business function.

A lot of the time, that's rolling up your sleeves to get hands-on.

Imposter syndrome is common in #prodmgmt

Here's 5 ways to fight it ✊

A thread 🧵
There is no one thing that triggers impost syndrome.

I've been in #prodmgmt for 5+ years.

In my experience, it usually comes from a lack of confidence related to a fear of

• The unknown
• Being wrong
• Failing
For me, this can be triggered by our lack of concrete deliverables

@idamezhim hits the nail on the head.
