Working on SEO for a nonprofit or charity? Here are 13 tips to boost organic traffic ✍️
1. Keep your website user-friendly and in good SEO health

Ensure your website’s technical fundamentals are sound—you don't want your SEO efforts hindered in the long run. Try using our free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools to monitor your website’s SEO health:

2. Get listed in directories and articles about nonprofit organizations

Keywords related to nonprofits and charities can be extremely competitive. Your best chance of being included in that top 10 is to get listed on the pages that rank.
3. Look for unlinked mentions (and turn them into backlinks!)

Use Google search operators to find mentions of your organization in the media + online publications (e.g. articles, listicles), noting any unlinked mentions. Then reach out and request for these links to be added.
4. Answer journalists’ requests

Use sites like HARO or scan Twitter for hashtags like #journorequest to find opportunities that could lead to you being picked up by the media.
5. Do guest blogging to earn links

Contribute guest articles on third-party sites to build backlinks and get more visibility.
6. Go after educational keywords related to your cause

Create content that targets keywords related to your cause.
7. Go after statistical keywords related to your organization (and update regularly)

Statistical keywords = Using statistical data to identify and fulfill a user's search intent. They can generate organic traffic and be a great asset for earning links.
8. Invite experts to write for you

Some topics are best covered by experts—and would give your blog posts added credibility. Get them to write your content or at least review it to ensure authoritativeness and trustworthiness.
9. Translate your content into other languages

If you’re a global charity, you need global visibility. Organic traffic coming from multiple countries can greatly contribute to that goal, so cast your net further.
10. Leverage local SEO

At the minimum, get a Google Business Profile up for your organization so people can easily contact you.
11. Get a Google Knowledge Panel

This helps you own more SERP “real estate”. You'll also gain more credibility and build awareness of your nonprofit or charity.
12. Optimize for branded search

Branded search = Any query that contains words and phrases associated with your brand, products, or services. Make sure you’re ranking for them!
13. Interlink your content

Our final tip: Pass link authority from one page to another by adding internal links between your content. This has lots of benefits, including helping Google to crawl your site better.

9 content repurposing ideas to try 💡

1️⃣ Turn your blog post into a video (and vice versa)

We do this often at Ahrefs. To decide which content to repurpose, find out what people are searching for by using a tool like Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer. Image
2️⃣ Repurpose your videos into a course. We did this most recently with our "Best of AhrefsTV" YouTube videos—you can find the free course on Ahrefs Academy:

3️⃣ Turn your blog posts into a book

This is what @CoSchedule when it published "How to Get Started With Agile Marketing".

Remember to also promote your book. Find sites that collate the best titles in your niche, then get your book mentioned.

How do you refresh your content? 🤔 Here's our step-by-step strategy (based on updating 50+ posts) ⬇️
1. Update outdated information

Is the information you have up to date with the current trends in your industry? This includes not only quotes and statistics, but also the examples used.
2. Add actionable advice/cut irrelevant details

When you’re writing, include the 80/20 action steps your reader needs to know, plus examples (hypothetical or real) to prove your point. But don’t write any more than that.

One of the hardest things for SEOs is prioritization. There are a lot of best practices, but some changes will have more of an impact on your rankings and traffic than others.

Here are some technical SEO quick wins 🧵
1/ Check indexing

Make sure pages you want people to find can be indexed in Google.

You can check the Indexability report in Site Audit to find pages that can’t be indexed and the reasons why. It’s free in Ahrefs Webmaster Tools ➡️ ahrefs.com/webmaster-tools Image
2/ Reclaim lost links

Websites tend to change their URLs over the years. These old URLs usually have links from other websites. If they're not redirected, those links are lost & no longer count for your pages.

You'll want to 301 redirect any old URLs to their current location.
