in 2015 practically every country signed on to the #ParisAgreement — a global compact to limit global warming to well below 2°C and preferably to 1.5°C.
delivering on this agreement basically requires achieving net-zero globally well _before_ 2050.
arguably australia effectively agreed to net-zero before 2050 back in 2015, 7 years and 2 prime ministers ago.
australia has a special interest in the paris agreement:
at 2°C warming we can expect to lose 99% of coral reefs — which are bleaching as i write.
…and, as we have been repeatedly warned, higher temperatures bring about increased frequency and severity of fires and flood.
most australian states committed to net-zero shortly after we entered the paris agreement, and the NT became the last jurisdiction to announce the target in 2020.
net-zero is old news… which is why @ScottMorrisonMP's "announcement" in glasgow was met with such derision.
importantly, there is no legislation behind the announcement.
morrison backed up his announcement with a "plan".
the vague document shows clearly that australia does not have a plan to hit net-zero by 2050.
check out this lame graphic from the "plan":
the govt’s own data shows that real emissions have barely budged since 2013…
if it wasn't for a drought and the pandemic, our emissions would be *up*.
we are doing a terrible job of reducing emissions.
…and the govt’s own data shows it expects no real emissions reductions outside the electricity sector over the coming decade…
which is no surprise given that there is no federal emissions policy.
"Hasn't he spent endless $$ on various schemes?"
nope. morrison has not spent significant funds on decarbonisation.
he's made more than a few announcements, but spent very little above ancient programs that abbott tried and failed to kill.
right now, the "emissions reduction" minister is in the process of dismantling abbott's "direct action" policy, and in effect _giving_ $3.5bn of public assets to the private sector.
this will make it harder / more expensive to meet our targets.
if you want to know why the 20% claim is effectively a lie, please read this thread.
[sad thing is, none of the MPs understand this… they just parrot the talking points provided by minister for emissions r̶e̶d̶u̶c̶t̶i̶o̶n̶, @AngusTaylorMP🤥.]
zoom to his wife: "hard-right warrior #LouiseClegg reckons australian plebs need more blackouts so that we might better appreciate coal. lou is on the board of hard-right think tank sydney institute… run by gerard henderson"
zoom to gerard: "widely referred to as gollum, gerard periodically emerges from his crypt to grumble about everything good. gollum hates @climate200, having written about it twice in two weeks…"
i'm really cross about gov't propaganda claiming australia "has made good progress in reducing #emissions".
[i added the emojis because the taxpayer funded ad is just so misleading]
everybody knows @AngusTaylorMP & team habitually lie to us, but do you know *how*? 🧵 #auspol
the main source of carbon emissions, and therefore global heating, is burning #FossilFuels — and we've done next to nothing to wean ourselves off them.
putting land management aside for a sec, over the last 15 years (since FY2005) australia's emissions have dropped by only 2.9%.
sure, we've made decent progress reducing electricity emissions (by replacing coal with renewables), but it's largely been undone by increases in "stationary energy" emissions (largely gas used for heating) and "fugitive emissions" (methane leaked by coal & gas companies).
rob and tony were outstanding local members and when the moment came in 2010 they took their duty to australia seriously…
working methodically with both parties they took a tough decision, one that played very well for australia.
not only did they usher in climate policy (with @Greens and @WilkieMP), which abbott/hunt tore down, but they played a critical role in establishing ARENA, the CEFC and the parliamentary budget office.
@JohnDaley_has credited the PBO as one of 🇦🇺’s biggest democratic reforms.
