🧵1/ Disinformation alert. A bunch of anonymous accounts are sharing a video re-upping the crisis conspiracy about the formerly pregnant woman Marianna Podgurskaya, who was filmed escaping a bombed maternity hospital in #Mariupol. Many are using copypasta tweets that appear to
2/ originate in the telegram channel 'intel slava z'. What's strange is that despite the anglified name of some of these accounts such as 'Teresa McCaffrey' @mccafferz72 none have bothered correcting 'women' to 'woman', even though some have added hashtags or emojis.
3/ I counted around 24 posting identical content. They falsely claim that Podgurskaya 'apparently died'. Podgurskaya did not apparently die, although the Russian Embassy claimed she was a crisis actor faking injuries. Another pregnant woman and baby were killed though
4/ Again, the narrative here is trying to re-ignite the crisis actor theory, suggesting that there was only ever one woman, played by 'Marianna'. I would suggest Twitter nip this in the bud. #ukraine#disinformation
5/ I guess no surprises that a bunch are those weird 'MAGA' anonymous American right-wing Pepe meme accounts. Who else loves to support Russian propaganda... #disinformation#Ukraine
6/ Ok Anna Taylor Sassy American, thanks for your lucid tweets on pro-Russian psyops and anti-Fauci conspiracies. Yes of course, we must punish the crisis actors. Forget all the dead civilians, let's prioritise your thing!
7/ Why does this account adlib some phrases but still keep "women" and capitalise "Airstrikes". Normal

🧵1/I have done an analysis of those responding to #NazaninZaghariRatcliffe's interview, specifically focusing on those calling her an 'ungrateful cow' for not showing enough deference or gratitude to the UK government. The Brexit partisanship on the topic is startling. Read on!
2/ First up. Accusations that Nazanin was 'ungrateful' started surfacing following her press conference that went viral on Twitter yesterday. She was calm and assertive, as was her husband Richard. Watch the video here
3/ I analysed around 14,000 tweets involving around 8600 unique accounts. I downloaded tweets that included the hashtag "send her back" and "ungrateful cow" and the keywords "Nazanin and ungrateful". (horrendous I know). The below network graph of tweets was generated
It is interesting seeing some people explaining away Russian attack on a mall because they've seen some blurry photos of trucks under a building. Some people defer instantly to 'rules of war', as if they were infallible and ordained from above when it seems so many questions
could be asked before that point is reached. E.g are the photos real? Why weren't the trucks attacked when they were in the open if they were filmed in the open? How did they know if they were in the building at the time of the attack at night? If they did know where the
vehicles were why did they not wait till they emerged? When, in urban conflict, does a building become dual use. What if it's a high rise in the way of incoming shells protecting a tank that's in the open street? Wasn't it possible to destroy the trucks in a different way? I
'I think when people think of authoritarianism, it’s very state centric — they think of governments using tech. But the authoritarian use of tech is actually multiple actors, both existing in authoritarian regimes and outside them.' #disinformation
2/ Biggest influencers. A lot of Chinese or Russian state-backed or actual state accounts. Coming in hot > @RussianEmbassy UK, @zlj517 - Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman, @Rt_com, @RussiaUN - Russian mission to the UN
3/ @TulsiGabbard and @TuckerCarlson tweets from a few days ago still getting a lot of love. This 'long tail' of their popularity indicates they are quite important nodes in this story.
I won't bother doing the debunkers today. It's Sunday afterall
'Despite the platform’s own policies, only 6 per cent of Kremlin-linked embassy accounts were flagged as ‘state-affiliated’, i investigation shows'
'Rather than a rare oversight by Twitter... i found the accounts of Russian embassies across the world are regularly used to spread disinfo related to the invasion of #Ukraine and that the efficacy of this is boosted by inconsistent implementation of #disinformation policies.'
1/ Next up on the #disinformation forecast. There are rumours that 'Wali', the Canadian sniper with the record for the world's longest kill, and who went to #Ukraine to fight, has been killed. No credible news stories are sharing this, but there is a lot of activity, incl bots
2/ it is being suggested that the story originated in Chinese media. Others have said they heard it on Russian telegram. The origins are not clear but those boosting it on Twitter are either not known or who have little credibility.
