Dear International Graduates,

You can hone your skills and bump your income on your 9 to 5 job if you want.

I understand it’s challenging, but it’s not impossible.

I will show you how I doubled my income within 18 months as a graduate working 9 to 5 in Australia

#Thread
1 — It starts with a desire

Every goal starts with a decision & a genuine desire to make it happen

When there is no desire, there is no passion, no willpower to make it happen. If you can't change your mindset, don’t read on, you will not follow through

You must decide
2 — Identify your strengths

Competence is key.

Employers exchange money for your services. The greater the services you provide, the better your value.

You have to get really good in your field to get more money. You need to be better than average.
Do this for one hour every day.

The secret is that you need to be really good at something that you are naturally good at.

Get better daily at what you are NATURALLY good at. You will be surprised at how solid you will be after 12 months.
3 — Temptations will knock on your door — don’t be distracted

It’s easy to get distracted while slowly working your way up to upgrade your skills to earn more income.

These days, you don’t have to look for distractions; they can come to you. Distractions are everywhere.
They will try to poach you on LinkedIn.

Don’t accept an offer with small raises prematurely during your planning and learning phase.

Be patient.
4 — Recognise opportunities to grow

Recognise opportunities in your everyday life

Recognise opportunities when you meet a new network

Always be on the lookout for opportunities to grow and learn something new.
Say YES for growth opportunities. Ensure you don't take on too much
5 — Find the jobs and companies that pay what you want

You want a role that comes with a pay level. One of the most important things is to find the companies that pay what you want for these roles.

You need to understand that not all companies will pay what you want
Once you have highlighted the companies that pay what you want for the role. You still need another compass. Can you guess what it is?

Job descriptions.
I recommend you read through the job description posted online by these companies at least once a week and save them in a designated folder.
Doing this will instil some of the requirements in your subconscious mind and always help you remember the key ingredients you need to advance your career.

The more compass you have, the better.
6— Surround yourself with people earning the income you want

It’s also a good idea to surround yourself with professionals already earning what you are planning to earn.

The idea is that you want to keep them around and observe some of their skills.
Soft and hard skills are crucial in the workplace, and while you can learn hard skills on your own, you can easily upgrade your soft skills by observing others.

I started by observing my manager and the person one step above him.
7— Create a plan, focus and follow-through

It’s easy to plan and imagine these beautiful things and plans you want to achieve. However, if there is no plan of action, nothing happens.

You need a plan to help you focus once you have decided to upgrade your pay.
Start by breaking down what you need to do into several tasks. Then;

Create an action list.
Decide on the one most important item.
Start with this item.
Seat a deadline
Finish off
Rinse and repeat
8— Evaluate yourself and ask for feedback

Okay. You have spent the last couple of weeks following through on your plans. It’s also important to re-assess your skill every couple of months to evaluate your progress.

Do this yourself or ask your mentor
Seeking feedback and learning areas you need to grow is critical for achieving your career goals.

You do not want to spend months following the wrong path, only to realise when it might be too late.
9— Apply for the jobs and ace the interview

Don’t forget to sharpen your interviewing skills

How well you do an interview depends on how well you can sell yourself. The interviews will soon come knocking. Always be prepared by practising.
10 — Stay motivated

Planning and applying to a job that pays what you want requires time and effort.
There is no guarantee that you will hear back from every job application you send, but the good news is that you have done an excellent job preparing yourself for these new opportunities.
Therefore, I encourage you to stay motivated no matter what. Keep moving and you will eventually get what you want.
Perhaps, you are a prospective or current student about to begin job hunting. This is 2022; your degree alone will NOT help you get a job. Don't set fire on your expensive tuition and years spent studying on fire

A friend rang me after applying for 40+ jobs in 2 months with 0 contacts and 0 interviews

I got him 4 recruiter contacts, 3 interviews and 1 officer in 2 weeks

Here's what we tweaked:

#thread
He initially told me he was job hunting and would prefer to apply online

After reading his profile, I tried to discourage him, but he insisted on online applications.

I agreed but on a condition
I told him:

"If you don't get a job in 60 days, we will do it my way"

He agreed.

Deal.

I recently helped 3 professionals prepare for job interviews.

They landed their dream jobs at:
- JP Morgan, UK
- Australian Government Health Department
- International Research Institute, UK

They couldn't thank me enough.

Here's how I prepared them:

[steal my template]
1. There are 3 key stages in a job interview - entry, process and exit.

The entry and exit are the most important.
#1. The Entry

You need to put your best foot forward for the entry by ACING your first question.

It's crucial

I had a 50% pay cut when I left my casual jobs in Australia to start a professional 9-5 one

You might think it's a crazy idea

Here are five reasons why it wasn't:

#thread
1. Post-Study Visa

After my degree, I received a two-year post-study work visa.

This visa lets you work unlimited hours in Australia. Same with Canada, the UK, etc

The problem is that many international students don't use this visa correctly.

They:
- Use it to work as much as they
- Use it to relax, cool off and travel the world for months

I am not saying this is bad, but if your goal is to get a permanent visa, then you need to understand that these aren't your immediate priorities.

I get shortlisted for at least 90% of the jobs I apply for.

Here are the 5 resume strategies that work for me every single time.

[Not your average resume advice]

#thread
1. Knowing the job of a resume

Your application process becomes easier once you understand that a resume only has one job.

-- To SELL you. @OgbeniDipo

Yes, a resume is a marketing tool.

@wakawaka_doctor
If it doesn't sell you, then forget it.

You won't smell the interview door no matter how solid your skills are or how talented you are.

You are the king, and your resume is your messenger.

It needs to represent you and convey your message properly. @ritapurity

Many international students enrol for another degree to remain lawful in various countries because they couldn't find a job.

I feel terrible.

Why?

It can be very expensive to study again.

Here are 5 ways to avoid this loop:
#1. Mindset

The problem with many students is that they only think about work after they graduate.

They live like we are in the 80s.
In the '80s:

- Education wasn't as common
- Employers wooed students with jobs
- Our parents got jobs before leaving school.

E.g. My dad, in his early 20's, got a job before leaving school. The job came with a brand new official car and a driver.

It's interesting how many young professionals think all they need is to travel abroad and all their challenges will be resolved.
