(17) SEAN STEWART

"Stephen King meets Ibsen. Trust me." - Neal Stephenson
Contemporary fantasy or magical realism in which magic comes bubbling back into our world as a wild and uncontrollable elemental force, coalescing as beings from the force of Jungian collective unconscious
And it is very much Jungian collective unconscious, pointed out in exposition by way of a stand-up comedy routine - as opposed to Freudian, although I would like to have seen a fantasy based on the elemental forces of magic bubbling out of our Freudian unconscious.
Admittedly, I found the world-building more intriguing than the actual story in Resurrection Man, which doles out that world-building in fragments and hints
A world "profoundly altered by WWII and the increasingly monstrous magic it unleashed', first as golems from the camps and then as minotaurs from American ghettoes. A world in which China is superpower – not through economics as in our world, but through geomancy or feng shui
That world formed the setting for two further books, Night Watch and Galveston. In the latter, the Texan city has been isolated and divided by magic, literally into a normal 'non-magical' half, and Carnival, an endless magical Mardis Gras celebration
His novel Mockingbird had a similar theme, but on a family rather than world scale

Sadly, after this creative flurry of novels in the nineties and noughties, Stewart moved from writing novels to writing interactive fiction or games

(1) ROMAN EMPIRE (509 BC - 1453 AD)

THE Empire

Pax Romana

"The grandeur that was Rome" - enduring both as empire, and in its influence or legacy Image
The empire that set the template for and defined the concept of empire in Western civilization. Literally, with the words for empire and emperor originating from the Latin imperium and imperator (and the title of Caesar as the origin for German Kaiser and Russian or Slavic Czar)
It may lack the size of other empires but as the saying goes, it's not the size but what you do with it, and in this case the Roman Empire is distinguished by its sheer endurance, both in the empire itself and in its influence or legacy - "there was once a dream that was Rome"

(18) MARK CHADBOURN
@Chadbourn

My introduction to Mark Chadbourn came from his Age of Misrule series, literally a trilogy of trilogies for a series of nine books of contemporary millennial fantasy Image
Not millennial in the sense of the generation, but in the actual millennium at the end of the twentieth century, as well as the world-changing Millennium, which comes upon humanity in a roaring storm of magic
You see, we live in a borrowed world, borrowed from the gods and fabulous beasts that used to rule it and now they want it back. Although borrowed is a strong word - it's more like they left our world on the stove and popped out for a bit to the Otherworld, until it was ready

Revisiting my #top10 wars of #history
@Paracelsus1092
@ViciousRicardan

(1) WORLD WAR -
SECOND WORLD WAR (1939-1945)

Sequel to the First World War - and with it might be considered the continuation of the same world war (or Thirty Years War) against Germany
World wars are a recurring theme in history beyond the wars designated as such - to the extent that I like to quip about world wars from World War Zero to World War X
On the World War X-side of the equation, the Third World War loomed - and still looms - large in popular imagination, indeed larger than it did in history, although some argue that the Cold War WAS the Third World War, as the War on Terror was (or is) the Fourth World War

CHRISTOPHER MOORE

Contemporary comic fantasy, combining the narrative voice (and Californian geography) of John Steinbeck and the comic absurdist fantasy of Kurt Vonnegut. Image
Like other writers, Moore has constructed his own storyverse, with its focus in California (Moore himself lives in San Francisco) and particularly the sleepy town of Pine Cove
Sleepy that is, until invaded by demons and their weary summoners (Practical Demonkeeping), Godzilla (in the fantastically named Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove) or near-miss zombie apocalypses (The Stupidest Angel)

(6) PERSIA - ACHAEMENID EMPIRE (550-330 BC)

"The empire that kicked off all the other empires" - the largest empire in history up until that point and first of the world empires Image
Best known in Western history as the liberators of the Jewish exiles in Bablyon and recurring antagonists of the Greeks, not surprisingly since it reflects the two predominant sources of Western culture
The Persians originally started off as nomadic vassals of the preceding Median Empire, the extent and nature of which is disputed but apparently much of the groundwork for the latter Persian Empire in forming a powerful Iranian state
