How Catholics Avoided Paying Millions in Reparations for Residential Schools. During its final weeks in office, the previous Conservative government under Stephen Harper reached a deal allowing the church to walk away from most of its obligations. nytimes.com/2022/04/02/wor…
Protestant churches paid about 9.2 million Canadian dollars. But the Catholic Church, which operated about 70 percent of the more than 130 schools, only paid 1.2 million of the 25 million Canadian dollars it agreed to raise in cash contributions as reparations.
In 1998, the Untied of Canada church apologized specifically for its role in Indian Residential Schools, and since 2008 has been actively engaged in the Truth and Reconciliation without any expensive journeys.
In 2019 the Anglican Church of Canada apologized for belittling Indigenous traditional teachings, banning ceremonies and demonizing spiritual traditions. It acknowledged these acts caused "intergenerational spiritual harm" without any expensive beggary journeys.
On Sept 24th, 2012 The Canadian Catholic Bishops formally recognized by the Catholic Church apologized unequivocally along with all Catholic entities directly involved in the operation of the residential schools for their role in indigenous residential schools.
The 2022 Indigenous delegation to Rome achieved Pope Francis's apology for residential schools that doesn't acknowledge institutional responsibility theconversation.com/pope-franciss-…
"The Pope did not acknowledge that the church as an institution embraced assimilationist policy in its decision to run the schools. On an intuitive and experiential level, the Catholic Church as an institution was an agent of harm. But Pope Francis has avoided saying this."
TRC estimates 80,000 survivors of residential schools live in all regions of Canada today. There are 139 Indian residential schools identified within the Indian Residential School (IRS) Settlement Agreement. There are 634 First Nation communities in Canada.
The potential $50 to $100 million costs of a reciprocal #Canadianpapalvisit possibly for the feast of St. Anne on July 26th to apologize on Indigenous land isn't far off the amount the Catholic Church still owes residential school survivors.
Many #Indigenousartifacts were taken away from Indigenous people after the Canadian government outlawed cultural practices through the Indian Act in 1876. Ceremonial items and other important objects were seized, then sold, given to museums or destroyed. Some are in the Vatican.

2/2 Digitizing copies of the Canadian #residentialschoolrecords and placing them in the hands of the appropriate First Nations would provide access to their own historical records for research purposes.
Vatican City is the world's smallest fully independent nation-state. The Pope is the head of the Vatican and whenever the head of a Nation-State visits Canada we pay for their security. If I am not right about this I'd be happy to accept correction.
Some Indigenous people in Canada say Pope Francis’s residential-school apology doesn't go far enough while others say they just don't trust the church.

#yycbeltline 🧵I'd like to bring forward another POV on policing. I'm experienced in protesting & I don't support counter-protesting. If there were no counter-protestors there would be no potential for violence. The police would not have to separate 2 groups to prevent violence.
If you aren't counter-protesting on the street you can put city council, mayor & police on the hot seat. Where is the permit to protest? What conditions does it state? If there is no permit or conditions then why is that? How & when will the council & police act to restore peace?
Don't counter-protest on the streets. The city council & mayor, MLAs and Police Chief aren't being pressured to ensure Beltline residents have peaceful quiet enjoyment of their homes, streets & neighbourhood. Make them act, phone, email, write & don't give up.
