I'm so proud of NZ for sending 58 skilled, experienced troops for logistics to the border of Ukraine. Hope there will be more deployments to come. We benefit from a victory there and so we must put skin in the game.
To foreigners, esp. in the US, NZ's initial contribution may seem very small. But remember: we're only 5 million people, our economy is hit hard by the pandemic, & opposition to military deployments is high. Oppo don't understand that if you want peace, you must prepare for war.
The NZ government is motivated to help bc it's a moral imperative for all democracies and aspiring democracies to step up, and geographic distance means nothing in our totally interconnected 21st century world. Plus, Russia potentially threatens the Pacific. Can't rule it out.
We know our tiny contingent & resources are hardly a game changer, but that's not the point. The collective security principle goes beyond treaties like NATO. If NZ is ever invaded by anyone, we don't stand a chance on our own.
And, Russia's atrocities demand a response...
In & after such a war, a large number of the small and/or middle income countries like NZ contribute to the effort, often in unsung ways.
Sending lawyers and judges to war crime tribunals, troop trainers, ICT/signals units, logistics, taking refugees, and voting at the UN...
While NZ *is* wealthy compared to most of the world, our disposable income is lower because of distance and scale, and half our export income is tourism. Every day I am grateful for what I have. Our govt must judiciously steward resources rn, balancing short & long term needs.
Far right ethno-nationalist populism has grown around the world in the past decade, including in NZ. Their narrative is to shun the refugee, the immigrant. They will never win power here, thank God.
In March we offered visas to 4,000 family members of Ukrainians living here.
And the plan to bring more Ukrainian refugees through the UNHCR to NZ is well underway.
Most Kiwis oppose the far right's narrative on refugees and other immigration. NZ needs more people, not fewer.
In summary, the NZ government is doing the right things to offer help to Ukraine and Ukrainians.
I am glad that even though the government leans left, they are willing to send military personnel and weapons to Europe right now.
Thread: Coverage of Russia's war crimes in Ukraine.
TW/CW: Disturbing, violent content
I you, like me, care deeply about the innocent civilians being targeted, but are unable to view or listen to disturbing material, then this thread is for you.
Watching the above video is optional, of course. I have tried to avoid seeing or hearing such content during this war, but sometimes I carefully venture in to a video because I want the information.
The video is less disturbing than others I've seen, but that's a low bar.
My content warning applies to the video up until 4m35s, when a different news story is covered. That part is about the great service of the US and Polish military, who have been carrying out joint exercises less than 100 miles from the Poland:Ukraine border. Encouraging to see.
I endorse this msg, although I'm not a liberal. I'm a moderate conservative standing with everyone who is pro-democracy and wants the USA to resume its long path toward freedom for ALL, despite the far right capture of the Republican party.
As a proudly ex-maga, ex-gop #NeverTrump#Ahoy! af conservative, IMO today's statements by the (soundly) defeated former president about the butcher of Mariupol who obviously cannot remain in office,
are literal treason against the USA.
Cult 45 members need to open their eyes.
When I was supporting T**** in 2016 some of the people in my life broke ties with me and refused to discuss why.
Nowadays I can understand why they did this. Since leaving the cult on 1/6, I've realized how it feels to objectively assess his political and business record...
and then have some folk in your life insist that 2+2=5, up is down, wrong is right, and lies are truth.
Even so, I didn't ditch anyone. They broke ties with me. I've had irl friends from both the left & the (far) right cancel me, lol.
I was never a big fan of Sen Cory Booker, but next time he runs for president, he's going to be my first choice. This speech is so eloquent, so compelling, that it should be watched by every democracy-loving person in the world.
That's the fullest version of Booker's speech I could find, so if you know of a longer version please link it below (and check first that someone hasn't done so already.)
There's also this excellent discussion:
Cory Booker's speech has motivated me to work even harder to speak up for, or offer support to, anyone treated differently bc they are Black, a POC, female, LGBTQ+, young, old, disabled, or part of any group visible or invisible that is marginalized by immutable characteristics.
Thread: International Women's Day 2022, US, & Ukraine.
Far right fascists (aka today's GQP) like chiming in to say female privilege is alive and well in the law requiring (almost) all men aged 18-25 to be registered for the draft, should one be needed.
Current US admin policy is to do all it can to avoid needing to have boots on the ground in Europe and elsewhere.
Since 1/24/22 the global security situation has worsened. If things get to a certain point, the US may need to bring back the draft.
It's mistake to exclusively think of the wars the US has been involved in since 1945, especially Vietnam. I see far greater parallels between our current crisis and 1939-45.
In both cases, none of the allied countries were sufficiently ready to defend ourselves and win the war.
