' @IrishTimes editorial “Russian atrocities in Ukraine: Bucha must be a turning point” crystallised the huge moral question facing the EU & Ireland: “If the evidence of apparent war crimes committed in Ukraine is not sufficient to justify the harshest possible measures, what is?”
'@IrishTimes drew attention to fact that we ignored Putin’s equally egregious crimes in Syria & Chechnya. I would argue the war crimes & crimes against humanity committed in Syria gave Putin the confidence to believe he could get away with literally anything in Ukraine'
'We spent three years making the documentary Bringing Assad to Justice researching some of the most horrific crimes committed against civilians in Syria by President Assad with President Putin to ensure the former held on to onto power and violated every norm of civilisation.'
@RonanLTynan
'The Russian leader saw clearly that Assad held on to power through torture prisons & massacres & the unimaginable cruelty involved in that from of governance drew nothing but a pathetic response from the EU and US.'
'Leading Syrian human rights lawyers Anwar al-Bunni & Mazen Darwish, themselves tortured brutally & imprisoned by Assad, told me their pursuit of accountability was not just about Syria'.
They believe that without accountability, same crimes will be perpetrated across the world
'Watching the same savagery visited daily on Ukraine that was inflicted on the Syrian people for the last 11 years it is very painfully clear if accountability was pursued in Syria the horror being inflicted on Ukrainians could have been averted'
'Possible to deter atrocities & influence calculations of Russian commanders, who gained their experience committing atrocities in Syria, showing there will be accountability for crimes in Ukraine by pursuing accountability in Syria now, given “more evidence than at Nuremberg”

A new report by the Association of Detainees and the Missing of Sednaya Prison reveals that the Assad regime confiscated a $1.5 billion US dollars’ worth of assets from Syrian detainees since the revolution first began in 2011. diary.thesyriacampaign.org/assad-robbed-d…
'ADMSP’s report
‘They took everything’: Confiscation of detainees’ assets & funds in Syria'
how the Assad regime uses detention & disappearance not just as a systematic tactic to evoke fear & crush dissent but as a source of revenue for its ongoing war against its own people'
'$1.5 billion is an estimate based on a survey of 105 former detainees who had cash, property, factories & personal possessions, including jewellery & electronic devices, seized while they were in detention'
Open letter to Danish Statsminister Frederiksen @Statsmin
Irish Syria Solidarity protest decision by Danish govt to cancel residencies & issue deportation notices to Syrian refugees
No part of Assad controlled Syria is safe for returned refugees
This action is illegal
2. Danish decision is in conflict with stated policy of EU
'Conditions inside Syria at do not lend themselves to voluntary return, in conditions of safety and dignity in line with international law. Many obstacles & threats still faced by returning refugees' #SyriaNotSafe
3. These obstacles & threats include
'in particular forced conscription, indiscriminate detention, forced disappearances, torture, physical and sexual violence, discrimination in access to housing, land and property as well as poor or inexistent basic services' #SyriaNotSafe
/2 'Recently, there has been increased discriminatory discourse against Syrians, especially from Lebanese officials, such as Deputy PM Zeina Akar who called for the return of Syrian detainees to Syria,
/3 not to mention the refugee return plan that the Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister, Hassan Diab, has declared that “the Lebanese government plan for the gradual return of the displaced Syrians, adopted on July 14, 2020, should be allowed to reach its goal
A real blow that @IrishTimes on the anniversary of the beginning of 10 years of slaughter in #Syria chose to publish another thoroughly misleading article by their regular contributor on the Middle East Michael Jansen whose columns differ little from the official Assad narrative
Jansen's is the main voice on Syria published by @IrishTimes for the past 10 yrs, & through her ongoing omission of 90% of what people need to know - rarely if ever mentioning atrocities, war crimes, massacres by Assad & allies -greatly contributes to the misinforming of readers
Article is as usual: no mention of Assad Russia bombs on families, hospitals, schools, bakeries, etc - deliberate strategy to force displacement of millions of Syrians
IT know @malachybrowne & other work proving these attacks: has no one at IT noticed Jansen never mentions them?
1. Conveys its support for the democratic aspirations of the Syrian people who, 10 years ago on 15 March 2011, peacefully demonstrated for democratic reforms in Deraa, Damascus and the rest of the country;
Pays tribute to the 500 000 victims of repression & conflict in Syria since beginning of the popular uprising
believes that the future of Syria should rest in hands of Syrians
conveys support to the unity, sovereignty & territorial integrity of the Syrian state & its people
Re the situation in Syria please see Irish Syria Solidarity Movement detailed letter to @simoncoveney and accompanying press release which will provide background to inform future discussions you may have on Syria
Very strange in discussion about the horror of Syria for Assad to be mentioned once, in passing, as far as we heard
Syria is not a civil war but a war of subjugation & extermination by Assad regime vs civilian population, plus actions of other countries pursuing own agendas
Humanitarian crisis in N Syria is hugely exacerbated by closure of all but one border aid crossing by Russia veto at UNSC, & Russia's threat to close the last crossing @simoncoveney@irishmissionun hold Syria humanitarian file at UNSC & are committed to somehow keep crossing open
