Some thoughts on the BLA attack in #Karachi University [Thread]

No doubt, the #Baloch insurgency has been redefining itself since 2011. What is surprising is how Baloch separatists, many of whom define themselves as secular nationalists, have now started following the same
strategy that has been used by hardcore Islamists such as #Bokoharam in Nigeria, Islamic State (#ISIS) in Iraq and Syria, Al Qaeda, and #Taliban in #Afghanistan. Use of women as suicide bombers.
This is the fifth rebellion in #Balochistan, and the current one is the longest, which broke out in early 2000. Still, it’s the first time the separatist GROUP #BLA has used a female suicide bomber to attack #Chinese nationals in #Karachi. There are many reasons.
1-There is an intense crackdown on #Baloch activists suspicious of having links to separatists. Thus, the women attract less suspicion and can easily gain access to their target.
2-Also, a hijab is a good source of hiding and conveying explosives. The female who carried out the suicide bombings in #Karachi was a burqa-clad woman. This is a shocking but, of course, new strategy in the #Baloch movement
3-Besides that, PREVIOUS suicide attacks by Baloch armed men haven’t achieved the desired results insurgents wanted.
4-The current attack is largely viewed as a successful attack among #Baloch separatists considering that the attackers achieved what they wanted. Thus, I fear such attacks by Baloch women will mount in the future.
There are other reasons: Since 2021, #Balochistan has witnessed an increasing attack by Baloch separatists in two paradoxical ways – A) involving young educated youth and b) now women.

This was the first suicide bombing by a #Baloch lady, and why I fear it will increase.
Because, in recent months after February #Nushki and #Panjgur attacks, only between Feb and April did the security forces hunt 37 insurgents in #Balochistan. Women are less suspicious and can easily achieve the target.
The question that comes to everybody's mind. Who could be these women?

I don’t think they are uneducated or minor women carrying out suicide attacks as the Islamists have been doing. I suspect these women are either widows, daughters, or children of Baloch insurgents. Or...
It could be former BSO Azad activists or women who have faced harassment and suffered mental torture at the hands of security forces.
No doubt, the State will react strongly, and there will be more crackdowns, especially against #Baloch women and rights campaigners.
The use of female suicide bombing by #BLA and Baloch separatists is a matter of great concern and calls for heightened vigilance from the State. But at the same time, the State has to revisit its policies toward #Balochistan.
As I said, these women aren’t minor or uneducated. Neither are they coerced. I am being told now the woman who carried out the suicide bombing was an MPhil scholar with two Masters. Not confirmed yet but if true is a dramatic change in #Baloch insurgency.
The #Baloch woman who carried out the suicide attack belongs to a highly educated family. She is the mother of two, and her husband is a doctor. She is neither a minor nor coerced by #BLA into carrying out this suicide attack.

What journalists experienced in Islamabad during Khan era #Balochistan-based journalists have been facing the worst for the last 15-years. B4 Khan came into power, local media disappeared & journalists lost jobs in B'stan due to financial pressure. Watch

I am very clear that the military establishment won't change its security-centric approach when it comes to Balochistan, no matter whether we make a new Pakistan, old, or Azad Pakistan. The situation for Balochistan will remain the same.
Also told @Rabail26 how the establishment forced seasoned journalists like @MalikSirajAkbar, @sajid_hussainb, & others to flee Balochistan more than a decade ago. From commercial squeezing to physical assault and disappearances, the state used every tactic to muzzle Baloch media.

.@AliHZaidiPTI's disgusting statement reflects on state policies. Honestly, if I start telling how his masters, judges, & bureaucrats treat missing persons' families, then every Baloch will start hating d State. Their attitude has been so filthy that I won't like to discuss it.
@AliHZaidiPTI People like me are either professionally bound, or they are silent only to protect this federation from falling. Otherwise, their behavior is always blood boiling. They keep saying that missing persons are in the mountains and have joined armed groups. Its totally baseless but
Yes, some of the family members or released ppl later joined armed groups. Because the system failed them. They were so fed up with day-to-day mistreatment and sexual harassment their women's family members had to endure. These are stomach-churning stories that are indescribable

A former east London businessman will spend the rest of his life in prison for conspiring to murder @AWGoraya, a Netherlands based blogger known for his harsh critique of Pakistan’s powerful army. MET Police said in January he was targeted due to his outspoken political views.
In February 2021, Dutch authorities informed @AWGoraya of a potential threat to his life. He was relocated to a secure accommodation by the police. In June, a 31-year-old British Pakistani man was arrested in London and was charged with one account of conspiracy to murder Goraya.
. @TownsendMark & I have closely followed this trial looking at threats to exile Pakistanis in Europe. Since early 2020, @RSF_inter says it has registered cases involving at least 13 Pakistani journalists & bloggers living abroad who received threats in different manners.

Baloch Nationalist Army confirms 7 insurgents were killed in a Pakistani drone strike in southern western Pakistan on March 8. It said the drone had also killed a key commander in the mountain range of Hoshab and Pasni in Kech, calling the strike “nothing short of a tragedy.”
BNA named the killed commander Hasil, saying he was killed with six others. “In the drone camp commander Hasil Baloch along with four others were martyred,” BNA said.” The group added that 3 insurgents successfully fought with grounded force, killing many before being shot dead.
BNA, which was formed in Jan after BRA & UBA merged, had suffered a major setback in #Balochistan’s KECH district. More than 20 BNA insurgents have killed in three strikes in February and March. Reports of the drone being used against #Baloch insurgents couldn't be confirmed.
