"πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ Hamburg shootout between two groups of migrants. Several people received gunshot wounds [...]. There are several deaths."

In a short blurry video we hear gunshots. What do we see? Investigate! πŸ‘‡1/...

The tweet above only has little over 1K views, BUT the same video with the same text was uploaded multiple times on Twitter (left), Reddit, Telegram, Facebook (centre) and YouTube (right).

Over 100,000 people saw the images pass by in that context. 2/...
I didn't even try Reverse Image Search this time: the footage was very blurry so matches unlikely. 😟

I did ask German colleague @fiete_stegers to take a look.

He immediately pointed to the number plate of a car in the video πŸŸ₯. 3/...
@fiete_stegers It begins with the letter code DO πŸŸ₯, which, according to WikipediaπŸ‘‡, is the code for Dortmund.

That city in the Ruhr area is 350 km from Hamburg.

Of course, a car from Dortmund could be in Hamburg, but it makes one doubt whether the video is actually from Hamburg.πŸ€”4/...
@fiete_stegers We googled the search terms 'shooting' and 'Ruhr' 🟩 for the period when the videos started circulating in early May πŸŸ₯.

This leads us to various articles about a shooting incident in the city of Duisburg πŸŸͺ. That city is also located in the Ruhr area. 5/...
@fiete_stegers One of the articles (left) contains a screenshot of the video we are investigating (right). πŸŸ₯ 6/...
@fiete_stegers According to @dw_europe, shortly before 9 p.m. on the evening of 4 May, a shooting incident took place in the German city of Duisburg, more specifically in the Hamborn district. According to Deutsche Welle, between 80 and 100 people were involved. 7/...

dw.com/en/arrests-mad…
@fiete_stegers @dw_europe When we try to verify the location mentioned in the article we don't find a match with Google Streetview. 😒

Be careful: Google Streetview in this street of Duisburg is only from Sep 2008! ⏲️ The place could have changed a lot in all those years... 8/...
@fiete_stegers @dw_europe Satellite imagery from Google Earth is more recent and now we do find a match. βœ…

We compare the Altmarkt in Duisburg on Earth (left) with visual elements in the video (right): the colour of the paving stones 🟨, trees in the background 🟩 and a corner buildingπŸŸ₯match. πŸ“9/...
@fiete_stegers @dw_europe A picture taken there (left) shows the pharmacy of the Duisburg Medical Centre ('mzd'). We see the same inscription 🟨 in the Twitter video (right).

So this is 100% NOT Hamburg ❌

What about the other claims: "several deaths" and "two groups of migrants"❓❓ 10/...
@fiete_stegers @dw_europe Police found 19 bullet cases fired from 9 mm handguns. 4 people were injured. 15 people were arrested.

According to WDR, 4 people were injured and were treated in surrounding hospitals, but probably did not have serious injuries. 11/...

www1.wdr.de/nachrichten/bl…
@fiete_stegers @dw_europe The Duisburg police wrote: 'Two of the injured were taken to hospitals by ambulance, two others fled first and later sought medical treatment themselves - none of them would have been in any danger of death.' 12/...

duisburg.polizei.nrw/220504hamborn
@fiete_stegers @dw_europe We can find no information anywhere about deaths caused by this shooting. ❌

The Duisburg police opened an investigation and called for anonymous submissions of images and witnesses. The police also placed a temporary camera system on the Altmarkt after the incident. 13/...
@fiete_stegers @dw_europe Also the claim 'two groups of migrants' is not confirmed anywhere. ❌

They were allegedly members of the Hells Angels motorbike gang who got into a fight with members of a Turkish-Arabian crime gang. 14/...
@fiete_stegers @dw_europe CONCLUSION:
We don't see a shooting incident in Hamburg, but in Duisburg. ❌

According to media reports, it shows a confrontation between a motorbike gang and a crime gang not 'two groups of migrants' ❌.

According to the police, there were no fatalities.❌15/...
@fiete_stegers @dw_europe What have we learned? πŸ‘©β€πŸ«

1) Number plates of cars can be a first indication for #geolocation. πŸš—
2) A good Google Search can be more effective than Reverse Image Search. πŸ”Ž
3) Be critical of a caption for a blurry video. Follow up on what you see. 🚨 16/...

WHERE was a photo taken or a video recorded? πŸ€” This quest is called #GeoLocation.

Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's very hard.🀨 But it's always exciting to find the exact spot. πŸ“πŸ₯³

How can you start doing this yourself? πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡1/...

#OSINT πŸ”Ž#GeoLocation 🌍#HowToOSINT 🧐
First you should watch or read a tutorial or 2.

I can recommend this one from @BenDoBrown: or my quest for a tree in Africa: 2/...
@BenDoBrown ⚠️ But stop consulting tutorials in time.

You can easily get impressed by very complicated research methods πŸ‘‡ @nixintel . (Don't use them when you start.)

It is much more important to TRY it yourself. 3/...

1/ Short 🧡 on how to find original footage from the war in #Ukraine?

We start from a video on Twitter and look for the original footage.

⚠️ WARNING: this thread contains graphic images of bodies. πŸ”ž

#OSINTπŸ”Ž #HowToOSINT🧐 #VerificationπŸ“½οΈ
2/ Why is this important?

1⃣) The original video can be longer and reveal more #info.
2⃣) You can find the #context in which this was posted first.
3⃣) The original footage is of higher quality and thus shows more #details.
3/ πŸ‘†These things may help in further investigation.

So looking for original/older footage is ALWAYS worth the effort.

We start from this tweet with a very horizontal short video and mention of 'Kharkiv'🟩 Image

The video of 2 minutes and 6 seconds shows 3 men in army uniforms.
