Russian disinfo-machine works like a foxy criminal attorney, defending a gangster who did terrible crimes:
It is all about perverting the truth until people are so confused that they don't know what to believe anymore.(thread)🧵
Many of us Westerners want to believe Russian lies, cause the harsh reality of war crimes, torture and rape is too much for our calm European mind. Russian disinfo gives us an excuse not to think about it anymore, to care less, to lose empathy and to continue our normal life.
We go full #falseequivalence and #falsebalance and speak about "both parties" instead of aggressor against defender, attacker & victim...Russian disinfo gives us also a reason not to help Ukrainians, not to deliver more weapons, to justify our decision to appease the aggressor.
What I can hear more and more often are statements like:
"why should we risk our security for this country, Ukraine is not worth it" accompanied by some old fake-news story to prove the point
It is also very interesting that people have a short memory about the Kremlin's motives in Ukraine and Europe: It seems unbelievable, but I still hear the opinion that it Ukraine and the US failed on the negotiation table and it was only about NATO and Donbas...
Russian strategy did not change much since 2014: As long as they will spread dirt about Ukraine, people will constantly lose solidarity and empathy for Ukrainians.
We should ask ourselves: Why are these stories published now? What is their purpose? #victimblaming
The war is going on for months already, but I do not see any major changes in our strategy against Russian disinformation, for instance in Austria or Germany

Collection of sentences about Russia/Ukraine that are based on pro-Russian or at least false information🧵
"we need to restore dialogue with Russia".
It was never cut off!
"we did not talk enough to Putin." Even now, he constantly receives phone calls and high level visitors
"NATO is encircling Russia" "NATO-expansion is a threat to Russia".
NATO is a defensive alliance: history shows, that is actually Russia that is a threat for its neighbors that are not protected by NATO #Georgia#Moldova#Ukraine
"Putin changed, he was different in 2000."
Putin was a KGB agent during the 80s. In the early 90s he said that he admires dictator Pinochet, in the 2000s his military commited war crimes in Chechnya
- Ukraine is an independent country since 1991 - but history of Ukrainian statehood is much older
- Ukraine did not "provoke" Russia, it was attacked by Russia especially since 2014, Russia doesn't accept the existence of Ukraine
NATO: Before the beginning of Russian aggression 2014, far less than 50% of Ukrainians were in favor of NATO membership. After 2014 and the constant Russian aggression (annexation of Crime, war in Donbas), the numbers increased drastically.
EU: The desire to join the EU is not new, especially after Euromaidan: In 2019 53% supported joining the EU (DIF survey), 79% had a favorable view about the European Union (PEW research center).
Russian disinformation against #Ukraine is based on two categories of lies:🧵
1) quite ridiculous stories that are easy to debunk, only radicals buy it
2) less obvious, more difficult to debunk --> potentially believable for anybody who has no background knowledge about Ukraine
Category 1) "Russian kid crucified by UA soldiers", "Zelensky is a Nazi", "there is no war, just a special operation"
Category 2) "Russian language ban", "Ukrainians attacked Donbas for 8 years", "civil war in Donbas"
Catagory 2 is more dangerous, cause our societies lack background knowledge (even many journalists) so we have no resilience against Russian narratives that are more difficult to debunk.
What journalists and hosts got wrong about #Ukraine and Russian aggression since 2014 (thread)🧵
Russian disinformation is not only one of many tools of the Kremlin's policy. When diplomats speak, they tell target group adjusted messages -->media needs to debunk them instantly
"Neutrality". There is no neutrality towards the truth in journalism. The problem is that many hosts and journalists are not able to debunk Russian false narratives. Some positions by the Russian Federation are obviously absurd, others are believed by many.
Language situation: Pres. Zelenskyy is from a Russian speaking region, and his TV series (like many other shows) were mostly in Russian,
The Russian language is common in Ukraine and in Kyiv too. However, many people in the West still believe Russian claims that it is forbidden.
