Happy #PrideMonth! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈

🧵To show my #Pride this June I want to highlight some of my favorite and most important openly queer artists! These people mean a lot to me and I hope to share a bit about each one everyday this month so follow along and enjoy!

#Pride2022 #LGBTQIA
June 1st: Chuck Panozzo
A founding member of @STYXtheBand, Chuck, came out as gay in 2001 and revealed that he had been living with HIV. Chuck is instrumental to Styx and their iconic sound. His strength to still tour is remarkable!

@MsMyaByrne
New and very up+coming, she is so talented and making a space for herself and trans artists like her! I am so looking forward to seeing more!

Check out her latest single and 1st on her new label @killrockstars
#Pride Spotlights 6/5
Rob Halford of @judaspriest
Rob was one of the 1st gay people I knew about. I cant explain what it meant to see such a cool and talented singer be openly gay. Representation matters y’all. Much of what defines metal today comes from him, a gay man! Image
#Pride Spotlights 6/6
@samsmith
Genderqueer folks like Sam are a vital part of the LGBTQ+ community. Their strength and self-awareness is beyond admirable and worthy of spotlight + a stunning voice.

Party of One w/ Brandi is one of my fav songs ever
#Pride Spotlights 6/7
@brandicarlile
Her dedication to activism, standing strong as a queer person. She has one of the most incredible voices, combine that with the twins you get perfection. IMO she is the future of popular music.

Here's her on SNL:
#Pride Spotlight 6/8
@trixiemattel
Trixie has redefined what success means for a drag artist. Her music is great + breaks boundaries by merging country, pop, + drag, plus it's catchy. I'm so excited to check out her new series on Discovery+ Trixie Motel!

TJ of @brothersosborne
TJ is an awesome singer/writer. His coming out was huge for country and his continued success in the genre shows how far it has come (acknowledging he's a white male and the barriers to inclusion are lighter)
#Pride Spotlight 6/10
@JoyClarkMusic
With a new song TODAY, how could I not highlight Joy? An incredible musician, her career is just now taking off and has been impressive. Her energy and enthusiasm is palpable and I cannot wait to see more from her.
@JoyClarkMusic #Pride Spotlight 6/11
@JanelleMonae is an iconic artist. From the incredible ‘Dirty Computer’ to powerful acting to a new book “The Memory Librarian,” Janelle is out there killing it. A strong, powerful presence, she is so authentic and original.
#Pride Spotlight 6/12

Sister Rosetta Tharpe
An absolute legend that deserves all the laurels I can give and has also been widely identified as queer. Instead of speculating though, I want to celebrate.
Part 1/2: Read here for more

Sister Rosetta 2/2
She created popular music as we know it by speeding up the rhythm and blues and absolutely shredding a guitar. She influenced Little Richard, she broke barriers for black women throughout her life while also creating popular music.

#Pride Spotlight 6/13
@eltonofficial
Today's my dad's birthday so of course I choose an artist we've bonded over my whole life, even seeing him live in 2015!

I don’t even have words to explain how much Elton means to me, but I’ll try anyway.
Part 1/2 Image
2/2
Elton was the 1st gay person I ever heard of and helped me see someone like me be loved by people I never thought could.
His music is incredible and new music continues to be w/ a Top 10 single in each of past SIX decades!
The most recent:
#Pride Spotlight 6/14
An iconic voice of the 60s, she is an LGBTQ icon who was out + in a relationship for 33 years before her untimely death

With hits like It’s My Party and feminist anthem “You Don’t Owe Me,” she dominated pop music as a female artist
#Pride Spotlight 6/15
Dee Palmer
Known as a keyboardist for Jethro Tull, she did orchestral arrangements also, Aqualung + Thick as a Brick. Palmer was born intersex and lives as a trans woman. She’s an incredibly talented composer, arranger, and pianist.
#Pride Spotlight 6/16
@chelywright
One of the 1st major country artists to come out, a trailblazer. She had mainstream success, even with a #1 hit, “Single White Female.” Since coming out in 2010, she still makes music and is a women's + LGBTQ activist!
@chelywright #Pride Spotlight 6/17
Dusty Springfield
1 of the most influential voices in pop music, she said in 1970 “I know I'm perfectly as capable of being swayed by a girl as by a boy. More and more people feel that way and I don't see why I shouldn't”
Her voice and music were iconic. Image
@chelywright #Pride Spotlight 6/18
Freddie Mercury 1/2
His songwriting is iconic for originality and mixture of various genres and styles to create something new. Often called one of the greatest singers, he had an insane range and ability. And his showmanship is nothing short of legendary. Image
@chelywright Freddie 2/2
Taken way too soon, he died from complications due to AIDS in 1991. He kept private about his condition while alive, but his untimely death raised awareness. Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness had an viewership of ~1 billion. Quite a legacy.

Happy #Juneteenth
@amythystkiah
I can't think of an artist more perfect to highlight today. An incredible queer black artist, she is defining this generation of music + placing the deserved spotlight on black culture in American music

1/3
This album is astounding, one of the most incredible, original, and captivating albums I’ve heard. It ranks in my top of all time + I have a signed copy! Also a member of the incredible Our Native Daughters thats highlighting the black history of the banjo and bluegrass
2/3 Image
She is an incredible artist and her creativity and originality are remarkable. “Black Myself” has become an anthem not just for black folks in country music but the cultural movement of the past 2 years.

I cannot recommend this artist enough.

@blkfootwhtfoot
Most known as singer-guitarist-songwriter for Alabama Shakes, her solo career is also amazing. One of the most incredible voices I've ever heard,
Here's one of my fav TinyDesks ever from her. Just astounding music.

@MileyCyrus is such a vibe. She's totally comfortable in her own skin and it's incredible. Her honesty and openness is impressive esp after a childhood in the spotlight. She's truly an artist and her voice is remarkable!
@MileyCyrus #Pride Spotlight 6/22
@halsey
A massive star, Halsey remains true to herself, her queerness, + her music. They stick to their authentic self and make music for people to relate to. Her newest album is an excellent example. Also very talented!
#Pride Spotlight 6/23
@orvillepeck
One of the most incredible, distinct voices, he balances country + rock and is absolutely a showman. The mask gives a sense of mystery, but the fact is that the music is good. That’s what matters.
@orvillepeck #PRIDE Spotlight 6/24
As women +LGBTQ rights are being consistently stripped away, representation and activism matter. @folkrockdiva is THE spotlight today, not only as an activist, but as an incredibly powerful performer. A stunningly incredible voice!
#Pride Spotlight 6/25
@metheridge
An absolute icon of the LGBTQ+ community, this list wouldn’t be complete w/out her. Her strength to come out in 1993 was monumental, + she is an activist and continues to make new music and tour!
Here's a newer song:
#Pride Spotlight 6/26
@Indigo_Girls

Absolutely iconic + active for over 3 decades, they continue to make music and fight the good fight as activists. They've provided vital representation + influenced most on this list!
This song seems pretty relevant:
#Pride Spotlight 6/27
Michelle Zauner of @Jbrekkie

Such a cool band, they're contemporary, indie pop that is so captivating and interesting.

She's a songwriter + vocalist and really creates an auditory experience. I've heard they're great live too!

#Pride Spotlight 6/28
Stonewall Day, I chose someone who, to me, represents the spirit of the mov't + the future.
@thealexnewell is incredible! I fell in love with him on the incredible @ZoeysPlaylist, but their own music is excellent too!!
#Pride Spotlight 6/29
June is almost over! So today is a double-header!
These 2 are equally worthy artists + songwriters. Along w/ iconic ally @KaceyMusgraves, they created one of the biggest country LGBTQ anthems ever, Follow Your Arrow.

1/3
#Pride Spotlight @TheBrandyClark
Brandy Clark has written for some of the biggest names in country music + has a great music career of her own. She’s integral to the country music that is reclaiming what country is and who it's for (everyone).

2/3
#Pride Spotlight @shanemcanally
He's an esteemed artist, songwriter, and producer. Coming out in 2001, he's provided such vital representation. The list of artists he’s written/produced for is literally too long for this list, plus his work on @NBCSongland is great too!
