Good morning from Wongwian Yai Station in #Bangkok. Today I’m on a #BKKdaytrip to Samut Songkhram by train. This is a live THREAD 🧵 of the trip. Also follow @ThaiTrainGuide for more photos and information.
[3] Tickets for the one hour train trip to Mahachai (Samut Sakhon) are only 10 Baht in 2nd Class with fan. The seats are hard but it doesn’t really matter as the journey is short.
[4] Video clip of our train arriving at Mahachai Railway Station in Samut Sakhon. There is a market here on the train tracks similar to the one in Samut Songkhram.
[5] All of the tourists head to Samut Songkhram for the famous market on the tracks but really the one in Samut Sakhon, an hour’s train ride from #Bangkok, is just as good, albeit smaller. But I like it better as no foreign tourists.
[6] We had about an hour in Samut Sakhon to explore the market on the tracks and the fish market. We went back to the train market to get some pictures of what happens when a train arrives. In the third picture you can see them moving umbrellas and produce from the tracks.
[7] There is no bridge in Samut Sakhon and so we had to take a ferry across the river for 3 Baht to the other side and then walk about five minutes to Ban Laem Railway Station for the train to Maeklong Railway Station in Samut Songkhram. #Thailand
[8] From the ferry, turn right and it’s a 5 minute walk to Ban Laem Railway Station. Near the station you will see a giant Seated Buddha. There’s only four trains a day to Samut Songkhram and so you need to time it right. Our train left at 10:10am. Cost was 10 Baht. #Thailand
[9] The train between Ban Laem in Samut Sakhon and Maeklong in Samut Songkhram is only one hour. Time goes quickly as this section is very scenic. You will pass quite a few salt fields. Seats are hard but it’s a short trip.
[10] Our final destination was Maeklong Station in Samut Songkhram. The highlight is the market on the train tracks. The best view is from the back of the train as you can see them put the produce back on the tracks as we passed. Watch a live video here: fb.watch/drZENb57ac
[11] The train passes through Maeklong Market eight times a day. We arrived at 11:10am. We then waited trackside to watch the same train leave at 11:30am. A few minutes beforehand, the stall holders lifted the awning and pulled back their produce from the tracks. #Thailand
[12] We didn’t stay in Samut Songkhram long. The next train wasn’t for another four hours and so we decided to walk to the bus station and get a min-van for 30 Baht back to Samut Sakhon and then our plan was to take a train back from there.
[13] By the time our mini-van got to Samut Sakhon we had missed the train by 5 minutes meaning an hour’s wait for the next train. But then we spotted a meter taxi. I checked Google Maps and saw that our home in Samut Prakan was only 45 minutes away. So we did that. Home by 2pm.
This was the cost
📌 10 Baht: 7:40am train from Wongwian Yai to Mahachai
📌 3 Baht: Cross river ferry in Samut Sakhon
📌 10 Baht: 10:10am train from Ban Laem to Maeklong
📌 30 Baht: Mini-van from Samut Songkhram to Samut Sakhon
📌 340 Baht: Meter taxi from Samut Sakhon to my home

This is the Paknam Observation Tower. The outside has been completed for several years now. But we are still waiting for them to finish the inside. However I heard that it is nearing completion and it should be opened to the public this year. THREAD.
These are some photos of the Paknam Observation Tower taken over the years. The foundation stone ceremony was in 2012. The first photo was taken in 2013. The last in 2016. It was scheduled to open in 2017. Note the Skytrain with no rails.
Tickets for the day excursion to the beach cost only 120 Baht in 3rd Class fan or double if you want air-con in 2nd Class. I prefer with open windows as easier to take photos. However, this time I’ve booked an inward facing seat as it gives more leg room for this 5 hour journey.
Breakfast on the train today is my usual. Stir-fried basil with minced pork. The cost with a fried egg was 30 Baht. Not the most generous of portions but good value for the price. Anyway, there will be more food opportunities later.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has just issued a pilot notice (NOTAM) informing airlines around the world of the latest measures for air travel to #Thailand. This will be effective from 1st May 2022 onwards: caat.or.th/th/archives/64…

1. Passengers who have been fully vaccinated are able to enter #Thailand without having to do any COVID-19 testing. However, passengers are advised to do an ATK test if they have symptoms.
2. Passengers who have not been vaccinated or not fully vaccinated can do a RT-PCR test 72 hours before departure and will be able to enter the country without any additional COVID-19 testing. Otherwise they will be quarantined as ordered by quarantine officials for five days.
This morning, I took a boat trip from my resort on Koh Phi Phi Don to Maya Bay. Koh Phi Phi Lay has only recently reopened to tourists after been closed for just over three years. This is a short THREAD of that experience.
[2] Boats are no longer allowed to enter Maya Bay and moor on the beach. They can go to the entrance to the bay for taking pictures. Boats have to then go around to the back where there is a jetty. We were there at 9:30am and I counted 40 boats. Mainly long-tailed boats.
[3] As Koh Phi Phi Ley is part of the national park, you have to pay an entrance fee. 400 Baht for foreigners and 40 Baht for Thais. When you arrive at Maya Bay on the other side, there is a viewing platform to look down on the beach and a snack shop. #Thailand
🚙 Today I have been invited by the Bangkok office of TAT to join a Thai media trip to Pathum Thani. There will be seven stops along the way. This will be a live THREAD 🧵 of the one-day trip. Hopefully you will discover some new places near Bangkok. #BKKdaytrip#Thailand
[01] Wat Sri Samosorn in Pathum Thani province is a popular destination for people seeking wealth. Here you will find a unique 2.59 meter high Thaow Wessuwan Giant who is the God of Treasure.
The Thaow Wessuwan Giant at Wat Sri Samosorn is different to ones at other temples as he is holding a bag of gold coins and is guarding a treasure box at his feet. People pay respect by putting gold leaf on the statue. Red coloured items are also offered. #BKKdaytrip#Thailand
