🌍 Ten ways disinformation has had an impact in the real world🌍
Every day #disinformation permeates into our lives, from Covid-19 conspiracies to false claims about the war in Ukraine. But what impact does this online disinformation have in the real world and on real people?
To uncover the human and political costs of the disinformation campaign around #Syria@ISDglobal and The Syria Campaign did the most comprehensive deep dive into Syrian disinformation to date. We found that:
1. Lies Cost Lives: Disinformation has attempted to discredit war crimes evidence from frontline responders like @SyriaCivilDef & medics, & to justify their deliberate targeting & murder by Russian & Syrian forces. 296 volunteers have been killed in the line of duty since 2012.
2. Confusion and doubt provide cover for political inaction, making it easier for governments to shirk their responsibility to act. This dangerous tactic often led to silence and inaction in the face of international war crimes, interviewees told us.
3. Erasing history & denying war crimes: Preservation of history is at stake when war crimes such as chemical weapons attacks are denied all together. For those who have lost loved ones or been forced to flee their life & homes, this denial causes devastating real-world harm.
4. Online hate adds insult to injury: It is a failure of governments and social media platforms that hate-filled conspiracy theories are so much part of human rights work and that survivors of torture and other war crimes must face a barrage of criticism for telling the truth.
5. Legitimizing governments' anti-refugee policies: Anti-refugee or asylum policies have benefited from disinformation, with some governments borrowing Assad and Russia’s claims that Syria is now safe and refugees can go home, despite stark evidence to the contrary.
6. Diverting valuable resources: In the face of Russian disinformation, policymakers must work harder to explain the truth to the public & other states.
7. Hampering humanitarian response: No one knows how much critical funding humanitarian organizations have lost due to disinformation campaigns.
8. Making a mockery of international law and institutions: When hospitals are bombed without consequence and humanitarians are called “legitimate targets” for attack, the credibility of our global systems are thrown into flux.
9. Paving the way for Ukraine: International inaction on Syria, helped by Russian disinformation, made the Ukraine invasion possible. 10. Undeterred: Despite the harms of disinformation, human rights defenders are more determined to save lives and expose war crimes & the truth.
LAUNCHED: Our report with @ISDglobal ‘#DeadlyDisinformation: How online conspiracies about Syria cause real-world harm’ reveals how the failure to stop lies spreading online about Syrian conflict has devastating impacts on people’s lives & govt's policies deadlydisinformation.org
The report reveals year-by-year Twitter data on the systematic & hateful #disinformation that targeted Syrian human rights defenders, @SyriaCivilDef, doctors & war crimes victims, sometimes endangering their lives- & how govt's & social media companies are failing to stop attacks
Despite a trove of evidence of torture, chemical weapons & the bombing of civilians by the Syrian regime & Russia, a small number of conspiracy theorists, aided and inspired by Russian disinformation, have managed to distort the facts & sow doubt among the public & policymakers
The new @UNCoISyria report on Syria is a catalogue of war crimes, many of them committed in the last 12 months. THREAD ohchr.org/EN/HRBodies/HR…
It is a stain on the world’s conscience that between July 2020 and June 2021
❗️Russia and the Syrian regime continued to attack hospitals and kill civilians throughout Syria’s COVID crisis;
❗️former detainees reported hundreds of deaths in Assad’s security branches;
❗️Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham detained activists and journalists arbitrarily;
❗️the Turkey-backed Syrian National Army subjected detainees to rape and torture in their cells; among many other crimes across Syria;
❗️and 12.4m Syrians suffered food insecurity - the most ever reported.
So much has happened in #Syria in the past week – world leaders must end their silence in the face of terrifying developments and the suffering of civilians across the country. Turning a blind eye to all these atrocities only gives the regime a green light to commit more. THREAD
#Daraa al-Balad has seen its autonomy crushed in the past days following 79 days of siege & heavy attack. Citizens now face additional military checkpoints, house searches & the threat of arrest for expressing opposition to the regime. 38k people remain displaced from their homes
Meanwhile the regime & Russia escalated attacks on NW Syria in the last 24h, striking towns, a camp & medical point killing 5 civilians & injuring 11. Since June over 120 civilians were killed incl. 45 children. #COVID in #Idlib is worsening with a record 1417 new cases on Friday
Attacks on civilians in #Daraa al-Balad intensified this weekend w/ reports of casualties & heavy shelling. The regime has besieged the city since June, strangling food, medicine & electric to over 50,000 people, in retaliation to local criticism of Assad's sham ‘re-election’ 1/5
Ceasefire negotiations are in peril after the Assad regime refused to recognize peoples’ right to demonstrate and express their opinion, and called for house searches and additional military checkpoints. 2/5
To further escalate tensions, on Saturday morning the regime sent green buses to Daraa al-Balad – reminiscent of Syria’s worst sieges – threatening to forcibly displace Daraa al-Balad’s civilians to northern Syria. 3/5
Thousands of Syrians were disappeared by #ISIS. Why haven’t local authorities @SDCPress & the US-led anti-ISIS @coalition prioritized the search for the missing & giving answers to their families?
Twenty-eight mass graves have been discovered since the territorial defeat of #ISIS in northeast Syria three years ago, report local First Responders who continue to exhume new graves in the search for thousands of missing people. truthafterisis.org/en/
New maps published today based on @SJAC_info data show that three of the mass graves are located on former prison sites, increasing fears that many of the missing might have been killed in detention truthafterisis.org/en/
