#P2Evo Gaming Insights! ๐ŸŽฎ

Is #BlockchainGaming overrated?

Maybe in its current form.

I'm still super bullish on the REAL value it can bring to gaming.

Top of that list 4 me is #interoperability, so let's talk about it...

In this thread ๐Ÿงต we will cover:

- WTF is interoperability

- Why is it a good thing

- Why it might not ever truly happen

- Why we could see it sooner than u think
1/ WTF is Interoperability in gaming?

The concept of players/assets/mechanics seamlessly moving between different contexts.

Porting over to other experiences or across different games.

This can include bt not limited to...
2/
- Player ID
- Reputation/achievement systems
- Avatars
- In-game assets
- UGC
- Tokens

It is important to note that...
3/ Interoperability doesn't necessarily mean that the asset is literally transferred from 1 context to another.

There are no rules stating that graphical renderings must remain unaltered across diff games.

For example...
4/ A knights shield could be an item in 1 game, directly impacting gameplay in 1 context & a cosmetic emblem on a cape w/ no additional effects in another.

The asset is still considered to be interoperable between the 2 worlds.
5/ So why is this something to be excited about?

Before we get into the benefits/challenges of interoperability, it is worth mentioning tht project teams need to first ask themselves 1 very important question:

- Is the added value worth the cost?

Keep this in mind 4 later...
6/ Value for players:

- Higher utility for ur assets/favorite IP
- Cross-progression so you can stunt wherever u go
- Cross-platform digital identities
- Frictionless movement between diff experiences

These are just a couple, is there any u would add? -> ๐Ÿ’ฌ

๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป
7/ Value for builders:

I will separate this into 2 groups:

- Large gaming studios
- Small-mid tier studios

Admittedly, the benefits for larger incumbents are harder to define. I will touch on this in a bit ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป wen we cover the challenges.

So let's start w/ smaller games...
8/ For smaller IPs or new entrants, the biggest benefit could be the "rising tide lifts all boats" effect.

- Access to a larger player base from day 1
- More experiences for players (higher retention)
- Increased awareness/marketing (faster outreach)
- Higher perceived value
9/ For larger publishers w/ popular existing IPs the benefits of relinquishing control over how their IP is used are harder to justify.

There is still value in cross-ecosystem promotion.

Example: Wen Epic Games helped promote Riot's LOL animated show Arcane in Fortnite via...
10/ a set of cosmetic skins.

LOL, Valorant, & more were then added to the Epic Games Store.

Despite this being a great marketing tactic, I believe the monetary incentives were most likely the deciding factor & these skins couldn't be used elsewhere.

So what's stopping more...
11/ AAA gaming studios from getting onboard w/ interoperability?

We can break down some of the main challenges into 3 groups:

- Graphical Rendering
- Relinquishing Control
- In-Game Asset Utility

Let's look a little closer...
12/ Graphical Rendering:

In short, almost every piece of gaming hardware has its own proprietary rendering APIs.

E.g. Fortnite must use DirectX for Xbox, GNMX for PlayStation, & NVM for Nintendo Switch.

This is expensive & prohibitive for smaller companies.
13/ Computers are more open bt still optimized for their own systems.

Smartphones accept multiple standards bt place restrictions to drive devs away from 3rd party software alternatives.

This isn't even considering the different visual themes each game might choose to use...
14/ For interoperability to work, we would first need every different stakeholder (developers, ISPs, hardware manufacturers, & more) to agree upon industry standards.

It's obvious tht each will have its own incentives/reasons as to y one method is better than the other.
15/ Relinquishing Control:

As I previously mentioned, large incumbents have few incentives to give up control over their IP, brand, assets, story, etc.

Allowing any new/established IP to enter their ecosystem also poses issues.

Wen ur already making millions from...
16/ An existing player base, y wud you encourage those players to go to the competition to play (spend)?

However, after yrs of no cross-platform utility, Sony finally succumbed wen their customers threatened to move to other platforms in order to play Fortnite w/ their friends.
17/ In-Game Asset Utility:

This one's big.

Think about all the assets you use in a game:
- Weapons
- Wearables
- Items
- Characters
- Consumables

Now think of all the various asset attributes that affect gameplay:
- Stats
- Boosts
- Abilities
- Inventory slots

Now consider...
18/ All the diff combinations, use cases, buffs, statistics, multipliers, etc. that ultimately let you play the game the way u want.

Imagine how much work/๐Ÿ’ฐ is required to build a game tht facilitates existing/future assets both inside/outside the ecosystem.

This isn't even...
19/ factoring in how true interoperability requires bridging of assets across chains/side chains or the different NFT standards.

If devs are expected to incorporate this lvl of interoperability, we could see longer waits & higher dev costs, which may be passed on to players.
20/ We may not see a Ready Player One type world.

Bt interoperability to some extent is still obtainable & I believe we will see progression sooner than u think.

This will be via:
- Interoperability within a single ecosystem
- Community-Driven Interoperability

๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป
21/ Looking at a single ecosystem:

It makes slightly more sense to chase the goal of interoperability provided there is enough capital/infrastructure/existing player base.

Teams would need to think how NFTs can add value over existing solutions like Battle. net/Supercell ID.
22/ The challenges I listed above are still there bt it becomes much easier for a single entity to pool resources/knowledge.

Benefits:
- Boost asset utility
- Increase retention
- Cross-promotion
- Grow LTV

Bt is the value more than the ๐Ÿ’ฐ made w/ a traditional gtm strategy?
23/ Maybe it's more of a web3 thing.

We've seen some web3 games launching mini-games accessible to holders of the OG NFTs.

Some projects are even offering SDKs/APIs for 3rd party devs to build upon their existing infrastructure.

Bt if the IP ain't strong, no 1 will come.
24/ Wht about community-driven interoperability?

Open source, decentralized collaborations between motivated community members.

Centered around an existing IP, ecosystem, or blockchain.

- Teams create the infrastructure.
- The community adds the building blocks tht...
25/ Expand the:

- Experiences
- Lore
- Game mechanics

Examples would be the MAGIC & LOOT ecosystems or NFTWorlds.

Both facilitate community members to build projects that add to the existing infrastructure & will ultimately lead to a (hopefully) enjoyable game.

However...
26/ This comes w/ its own set of challenges.

"Committees don't build good games" is a big one.

Sometimes a more centralized approach can lead to faster growth & better player experience.

Fair to say this is still in its infancy & we will have to wait to see how it turns out.
27/ Some closing thoughts to end this long thread...

It's easier to segment interoperability into visual & mechanical aspects.

- Visuals ain't easy bt more obtainable.

- Mechanics are a headache & first need industry-wide standards & better infrastructure.
28/ Wht Epic's Fortnite/Games Store/Online Service or UR Engine & Unity are working towards still gives me hope.

Bt it isn't clear if the value of interoperability outweighs the costs/alternatives.

In the end, if publishers don't want it -> players won't get it.
29/ I think we will see the blockchain gaming space push this narrative more than other sectors of the market.

Makes sense seeing as small/indie devs are quicker to innovate & have more to gain.

Bt it is anyone's guess how this will turn out for them in the long run.

An up-to-date thread ๐Ÿงต on @NFTWorldsnft (NFTW) and some impressive projects in the $WRLD ecosystem.

I will focus mostly on affordable ways to get in and ride the NFTW wave ๐ŸŒŠ all the way to the moon ๐ŸŒœ
1/ I won't go in-depth into what NFTW is as there is so much great content out there.

If you don't know anything about NFTW, the first thing you need to do is go check out this incredibly informative thesis on Web3's most exciting #metaverse by @whtny__

2/ Since the project launched in Sept 2021, the co-founders @iamarkdev & @temptranquilthe have consistently under-promised & over-delivered.

Check out @mathieutebele's in-depth overview if you want to know more about what the team has already achieved.
