#ForgettheHills
#landslide videos from South Garo Hills...
Rain is just the trigger. If you notice the trees are mostly #Plantation trees, Betel Nut... Once these hills were thickly covered with multi species trees.
But with new plantation economy, illegal coal mining, rampant boulder quarrying and topped with obsessive road making - these hills are scarred and destabilise.
Whether it is Haflong railway station or now Manipur - in the name of bringing empire of development - hills are being bulldozed through. These are not acts of God but acts of deliberate destruction
INFRASTRUCTURAL terrorism

Why are these new road expansions and railway invasions happening the hills?
1. Nation State Making - Making 'inaccessible' hills part of India - chaining them to the centre if you like.

2. Money Making - Obviously large infrastructural projects oils the new
30% economy (earlier it was 15%) most of this 30 is leached to contractors in North and West. Projects would be granted to ostensibly government construction companies or large corporations but then it would be outsourced to usually construction groups headed by
ruling party lackeys. Electoral bonds and returns on influence investments. Now this gets subcontracted to local busybody suppliers and contractors for much reduced costs.

<For A People's Shillong>
Hawkers and street vendors in Shillong have decided to stop using plastic bags and will instead use cloth bags and encourage customers to bring their own.
#UnionPolitics #Shillong #Ecology
General Secretary of the Meghalaya and Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association, Shane Thabah, informed reporters today that plastic pollution is unsustainable, with bags clogging drains, which can lead to localised flooding during the monsoon season.
Customers can help reduce plastic waste by bringing their own bags and if they do not have one on hand, the hawkers will sell them bags made from recycled cloth or other material for Rs 15.

<Better Late Than Never> @NHMMeghalaya @SangmaConrad
Having behaved like a troll for sometime now on government's CoVid19 communication strategy, this news is welcome. Hope that the communication unit takes its work seriously and
starts by figuring out the crazy ideas about the pandemic that have taken root in the community and gets out of the Shillong English Speaking Class bias of its top down messaging. So some trollish free advice.
1. Khasi, Garo, Pnar, Hindi, Bengali, Nepali are the languages spoken in Meghalaya not English. So, start thinking in these - don't do cookie cutter translations of Delhi produced communication material expensively printed (forget about making east money on printing)

Covid 19 is raging in north east India and #Meghalaya is now under complete lockdown. This has affected daily wage workers including hawkers and street vendors.

From March 2020 onwards their livelihood has met with increased vulnerabilities and challenges. Now under full lockdown again and prohibited from engaging in trade this section of the population has been under severe stress.
They have no income support from the government for expenses towards rents, school fees, and food. We want to raise sufficient funds to support their various needs including medical requirements and everyday needs.
