💡Let this sink in—guns now kill more Americans between the ages of 1-24 than motor vehicle accidents. ➡️Before guns took the lead, vehicle accident deaths was once the leading cause for 60 years. Not anymore. #EndGunViolence
economist.com/graphic-detail…
2) After more than 60 years in which motor-vehicle crashes were the leading cause of death for young people, guns now kill more Americans between the ages of one and 24. In 2020 more than 10,000 young Americans were killed by firearms, up from just under 7,000 two decades earlier
3) Regulations on guns have been loosened in much of America over the past 20 years. A bill that aimed to introduce universal background checks on gun sales failed to pass the Senate in 2013.
4) Although last year 27 states and Washington, DC passed 75 laws to increase gun safety, according to the Giffords Law Centre to Prevent Gun Violence, a pressure group, several states, including Texas, have moved in the opposite direction.
5) The Lone Star State now allows “permitless carry”—ie, people over 21 can carry guns in public with no permit or training, provided that they are not otherwise banned from owning a firearm. In 2021 19 states passed a total of 64 laws to reduce restrictions on guns.
6) meanwhile, More than 220 shot and killed in U.S. gun violence over July 4 holiday weekend alone. cbsnews.com/news/us-gun-vi…
7) There was one child found wandering around after the #HighlandPark shooting - both his mom and dad both were killed in the shooting. His father shielded his son from the bullets — and gave his life to save his son. Let’s stop this tragedies.
8) I can’t get over this story… when the 2 year old’s grandfather came to pick up the now-orphaned boy, the child said “mommy and daddy coming soon”… 😥 I cried.

chicago.suntimes.com/2022/7/5/23195…
9) Let’s end gun violence from the root cause, not by making kids wear damn bulletproof blankets.
10) Meanwhile in Texas, you can buy an AR-15 and unlimited rifle ammunition easier than you can shoot a duck hunting shotgun that has restricted ammo for the sake of not over killing ducks 🦆

NEW—It is time for the global public health community to recognize a growing reality: #Monkeypox is now a pandemic—unless we declare an emergency & act quickly to combat it, we risk repeating the same mistakes we made with covid.🧵@kavitapmd @yaneerbaryam
washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
2) No longer contained to a single continent or found only among travelers, the monkeypox virus is undergoing community transmission in dozens of countries worldwide and spreading unchecked at an alarming rate. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
3) This is especially dangerous for the immunocompromised, pregnant women and young children. They all have a hospitalization and death rate from the virus that is much higher than that of healthy adults.

🧪T CELL DAMAGE—This doctor’s T-cells are way **below normal** on 5 different T-cell parameters after being #COVID19 infected 5 times! Several studies have found T cell suppression/damage after COVID. ➡️You do NOT want reinfections—don’t be blasé with mass infection! #LongCovid
2) so what is the evidence that #COVID19 is associated with T cell death? Here are some below. Notably one study even found more T cell apoptosis than even HIV according to immunologist @fitterhappierAJ
3) there used to be doubters on COVID’s negative effects on T cells. But those doubts are fading as it’s becoming slowly more clear there are major consequences on T cells.

📍“Super Gonorrhea… poses a major public health threat". #SuperGonorrhea is a type of antibiotic-resistant strain—some say it may be spreading from bad use of antibiotics like azithromyocin vs #COVID19 (remember that 2020/2021 trend?)

3) Please, dear god, we don’t need Super Gonorrhea. You just gave us monkeypox to juggle with COVID.

Is #monkeypox an emergency yet?—“Monkeypox is mutating up to 12X faster than expected, amid warnings 🇬🇧 could see as many as 60,000 new cases a day” by 2022 end.

I think our projection (HT @JPWeiland) of 100k cases by August & 1 mil by Sept is realistic.
independent.co.uk/news/health/mo… ImageImage
2) “While a surge to tens of thousands of daily cases in six months might seem exteme, scientists have found the virus appears to be mutating at an unusual rate…”
3) “In a study published in journal Nature Medicine, Portuguese researchers found samples of the virus had 50 mutations in its DNA compared to 2018. That’s between six and 12 times the number scientists would normally expect over the same time period.”

⚠️DECLARE ASAP—@WHO is again weighing to declare #Monkeypox a PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY (PHEIC)—after declining last week. 👀“Children already infected”—@DrTedros is reconvening the panel—concerned MPX is moving "into high-risk groups—children, immunocompromised & pregnant women"🧵
2) @DrTedros will reconvene the emergency committee on #monkeypox "as soon as possible" due to the "evolving situation," after @WHO said last Saturday MPVX wasn't a PHEIC "at present" (a 3-11 vote to declare PHEIC last week). It took 9 days just to convene a meeting last time.
3) last week, @TheWHN aggressively declared #monkeypox a pandemic emergency— on June 22, 2022, a day before the WHO emergency meeting on the 23rd. Our goal was to urge WHO and others to act and prepare. WHO declined last weekend. I sure hope they don’t do so again!!

I don’t know if anyone cares about kids—but #COVID19 hospitalization in kids have been steadily increasing for 2.5 months— now matching hospitalization last seen in February. Adult hospitalization rising too. #BA5/4 is behind the latest surge. #CovidIsNotOver

HT @DrWilliamKu
2) Further, pediatric hospitalizations for #COVID19 are even more aggressively increasing in England among both youngest kids and older kids. England has even more #BA5/4 than US… it’s a bellwether of what is to come.

3) The worry about #Ba5/4 is very real. It’s highly evasive against past immunity. And it’s causing hospitalization surges worldwide.
