For many, 15th August, 1947 was the summit in the fight to achieve Independence!

In reality, it was the base camp!

As we celebrate our 75th years of Independence, the question always comes up “Are we really Independent?”

And I feel that it’s relative!

#IndependenceDay
You have to look at it like vectors!

Relative change of position in a specific direction!

And in this case, that arrow has to point upwards, forwards and onwards!

So a visit to the post office the other day reminded me how much Independence we have truly achieved!
Starting with that very same establishment!

No longer does a parent with a child abroad have to wait weeks to hear from them in the form of a letter! They can receive multiple, May be too many, WhatsApp messages from them on a daily basis on their smartphones virtually free!
From not having phones to having to book a trunk call to visiting the STD/ISD booth to talk to their loved ones from 100 rupees a minute for a mandatory 3 rupee phone call to now video calling grandkids daily for virtually free!
From having to wait for 7 years and having to pay a 100% “ON” for mediocre cars and scooters to virtually walking into a showroom and being able to buy a world class car on the spot!

From having to wait for years to get a gas cylinder at home and even having the hassle of
getting it replaced to having it comes home via a pipeline there by virtually reducing the wait time for those who still use cylinders to couple of hours!

From not being able to watch Sunny Gavaskar make a sensational debut in 1971 to watching Kapil lift the cup on B and W DD
to watching Sachin score a dream century at Perth on Prime Sports on colour TV in 1992 to watching the IPL on remote villages on their smartphones!

From not planning trips abroad because it meant the horror of getting a passport and it’s month long processed including weeks
for police verification to making an appointment online, having the documents processed same day for police verification and getting an expired passport renewed in 3 days!

From having people get stuck on a single lane Pune Mumbai NH4 to being able to make single day trips due
to the Expressway, though we have now moved into the even that is not sufficient stage now!

From having friends whose fathers were in the Merchant Navy and hence were the only ones with Nike shoes and a “686” desktop to having every single brand here and each new gadget being
launched in India virtually the same day!

From not knowing what internet was to paying more than a litre of petrol for an hour of terrible dial up connections to having the cheapest phone data plans in the world!

From knowing that every Thursday meant no power to virtually
uninterrupted power in many parts of the country!

From having to depend on friends and family to bring in a dental instrument to being able to deliver the same crown in Pune as I did in New Jersey!

From having to listen to how “India is a land of elephants and snake charmers”
to exporting Billions of dollars worth of IT services!

From Australian and English cricketers hating on India as a hot country with bad Prawns curry to everyone past, present and future cricket players, umpire and coach dying to get an IPL contract!

These are a few examples
examples that came to mind!

Last but not the least, from not knowing credit cards to having the world’s best digital payment system which has traversed all strata of society to a point where credit cards, check books and banks might be extinct in the future!

Jai Hind!
Sure we have a LONG way to go on a lot of fronts!

But for now let’s celebrate these victories!

If you have a positive story to add, please do it right now!

If you have a negative one, may be do it tomorrow?

The search for something for our clinic landed me in the heart of Ravivar Peth!

Any true blue Pune 4 native has his roots in the original Pune aka “The city area” or Pune 30!

A thread of what was meant to be a 30 mins visit which turned into a 3 hour walk!

Enjoy…….
Small narrow by lanes with chock a block shops doing brisk business but run down houses above which are but a mere shadow of their glorious past!

A common theme you will see often in this thread…
Beautiful architecture…….

A daily wage labourer resting his tired limbs after a hard day of physical work!

Ropes, ropes and more ropes!

Every week, I get at least one phone call complaining of severe toothache, almost always in the molars. (Back teeth).

The patient comes in and the clinical examination and xrays show no cavities, and the tests for fracture are usually negative at this stage.

#Pune #Dentist
Usually it can only mean one of two things:
1) If the pain is restricted to the upper molar, then a recent of concurrent history of sinusitis/runny nose/cold etc. I typically see this around late November and the history is very clear.

2) BRUXISM!
What is Bruxism?

In plain and simple words, severe uncontrolled undesirable grinding of teeth against each other, usually occurs when the patients is asleep and the patient has no idea they are doing this.

The test is very simple. I will use my finger to test the Lateral

“Doctor why do I need to take this letter to my physician? It’s just a tooth l! Just take it out! What does my heart have to do with it?”

If you are a dentist, you have heard this line many many times!

Here’s why:

Old family friend.

Wife passed away many years ago due to
Cancer!

Son in the US!

Not much going on for him other than a job!

Over the last few years, ended up neglecting his health!

His diabetes was through the roof!

The 3 month average, HbA1C, was around 10 for years! (Even for diabetics it should be under 7)
Tried very hard to motivate him to address it! No change!

Wears an upper complete denture and has a few broken teeth in the lower jaw!

Met someone who got a full mouth implant rehabilitation done and so now wanted the same!

FINALLY got it to 7.5ish in December!

Great!

Dr Madhav Ghate, practising Psychiatrist, Pune writes on:

Why Tennis is so much more than a game!

I have been playing tennis for more than 55 years. Played it at the school, college, university level and even up to national and international levels.
I have also played many other games like Cricket, Table tennis, water polo, Athletics and so on. But gradually Tennis became my first passion. So much so that my wife used to say that it’s your first wife. Now after seventy years of life, looking back, I have realized that Tennis
has given me a lot of things beyond just the pleasure of playing the game. Without a doubt I can say that I ENJOY life. Every day ! Being a psychiatrist, I have a habit of analyzing things. You see, WHY is an extremely important question not just in psychiatry but in medicine in

My 2658956th post on why you should see a dentist on time!

This patient had been advised to get her wisdom tooth removed on time. Out of fear, she never got it done!

I removed another tooth for her on the other side and she had no issues at all!

So she knew it won’t hurt!
She finally called 2 days ago saying she is in a lot of pain and needs the tooth extracted!

The issue was that the tooth was very close to the nerve and there was a chance of permanent nerve numbness if it were to get damaged during extraction.

You might say then why take it
out?

Because it was decayed and there was a bigger chance of nerve numbness if the tooth got infected and it spread into the nerve!

That’s exactly what happened!

The right half of her chin and lip was “tingling” when she came in today!

The infection was pressing on the
