While this poll may not represent the entire #Taiwan society's opinion landscape, it is a clear indication that #China's aggressive military moves around Taiwan over the last few weeks have in fact worked against its well. Instead of planting fear into more Taiwanese people's ...
... mind, this poll reflects that more Taiwanese people now think simply backing down to pressure from #Beijing isn't the best option. It also shows that more people in Taiwan are supportive of the Tsai administration's efforts of international outreach over ...
... the last few years, especially since #COVID19 began. Additionally, the exercise also didn't necessarily push more people in #Taiwan to blame Pelosi for the heightened military tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
It remains to be seen if this toughened attitude in #Taiwan's civil society will last, but I think it's safe to say that #Beijing's intimidation campaign is definitely pushing more and more people in Taiwan away, rather than winning more hearts and minds.
Another thing to watch is whether #Beijing will only push harder in their aggressive way or will they consider a different strategy. I think these are potential signs to look out for as Taiwan heads into the local election in November and #China prepares for the party congress.

Today, @UyghurProject and @UyghurCongress submitted a criminal complaint in Argentina under the universal jurisdiction provisions as set out in the Argentinian Constitution.

Last week, Estonia and Latvia withdrew from the "16+1" framework led by #China. I talk to @UCerenkova and @ivana_karaskova about how these developments affect #Beijing's influence in the region as well as the future of the framework. My latest:dw.com/zh/%E4%B8%AD%E…
In an interview with @business, Estonia's Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said China’s refusal to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine played a role in Estonia’s decision to quit the "16+1" framework.
“It was definitely a factor that we kept in mind when making the decision. Before that, we consulted with a series of allies,” he said.
After Russia invaded #Ukraine in February, the National Palace Museum in #Taiwan began to draft its "wartime response exercises." Now, some other museums here are following in their footsteps amid rising tensions with #China. My latest: dw.com/en/taiwan-eyes…
In July, Taiwan's National Palace Museum in Taipei held a "wartime response exercise" to train staff about what to do in the event of a war breaking out.
Taiwan's legislature has been urging the museum to establish protocols since March, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, which raised fears of Beijing carrying out a similar invasion of Taiwan.
Hong Kong’s justice minister has ordered a non-jury trial for the city’s largest national security case to date in which dozens of pro-democracy politicians face up to life in prison, according to documents seen by AFP. hongkongfp.com/2022/08/16/non…
Trial by jury has been used by Hong Kong’s common law legal system for 177 years but legislation imposed by China in 2020 to curb dissent allows cases to be heard by dedicated national security judges.
An order signed by new Secretary for Justice Paul Lam dated Saturday cited the “involvement of foreign elements” in the case as a reason to depart from the tradition of jury trial.
