For last 1.5 months I’ve been investigating Olenivka a Russian prison where civilians are apparently disappeared, & uncovered evidence of potential war crimes. In middle of digging into it, on 29 July, an explosion there killed over 50 Ukrainian POWs (🧵) independent.co.uk/news/world/eur…
2. There are dozens of civilian inmates effectively vanished. I interviewed 4 civilian ex-detainees & their relatives as well as family members of civilians and POWs who are still believed to be inside. Families only find out their loved ones are inside from released cell mates
3. Our interviews reveal evidence of possible violations of international law & war crimes, including torture, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention and forced labour. The testimonies also cast doubt on Moscow’s claim that Ukraine had rocketed its own PoWs in Olenivka
4. I spoke to ex detainees who met British citizen John Harding there (in the barracks). They sketched out a map of Olenivka explaining that the location of the blast site was not where inmates usually slept, and has been empty until very recently #Olenivka
5. Ex detainees described being &seeing torture. The “welcome party” where they’re beaten, threatened with “execution” as well as being held in solidarity confinement. They said at points they were starved& forced to work on renovating the jail which had been abandoned #Olenivka
6. I shared the testimonies with @amnesty and @hrw. Amnesty’s Allan Hogarth they were “extremely disturbing allegations” of acts that, if proved to have taken place, would be likely to constitute war crimes. #Olenivka
7. This investigation is part 1 of my text and video series called The Missing on thousands of Ukrainians who have vanished since Putin’s invasion started in February. It’s the cruelest fate for families left behind. Please read: independent.co.uk/news/world/eur…
8. Front page of the Sunday edition.
9. Just a postscript, one of the most heartbreaking quotes was the description of a former border guard held incommunicado in Olenivka. He had a breakdown & sunk into deep depression. In a corner he kept repeating "I will spend 25 years in here. My life is over. My life is over"

The war in Ukraine threatens to unleash an “unprecedented wave” of global hunger & destitution according to the UN. I travelled to Donbas, Kharkiv, Dnipro& Kyiv to meet farmers trying to harvest under shelling, missile fire & recent Russian occupation (🧵)independent.co.uk/news/world/eur…
2. Right on cue, a shell landed in the field behind us as we spoke to this farmer in Donetsk (L) about the advancing frontline. In Dnipro while talking to a farmer, air defence shot down a missile above our heads (as seen in the pic). In Kharkiv the sound of shelling was constant
3. They all said even if they can harvest in this nightmare with mined fields, destroyed equipment & under fire, they can’t store their grains or sell them for export as Ukraine’s ports remain blocked. A deal may be signed today but Ukrainians are sceptical it will be implemented

I interviewed 3 of the asylum seekers supposed to be onboard Tuesday’s failed flight to Rwanda. One told me he was forced into a restraining harness on the plane. Officers pushed him to the ground& put a knee on his head, he couldn’t breathe w/ @maybulman independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
2. The man in the restraining harness was witnessed by 2 other asylum seekers we separately interviewed. I was sent a video recording of a phone call the man made to a friend where he’s screaming in pain. 1 of the asylum seekers said harness was “like what you’d use for a dog”
3. Another asylum seeker - who has a sister who is British - said officers told him they would take him by force if He didn’t come. “3 officers pulled my hands & my neck. They told me if I made any movement or tried to escape they’d restrain me. It reminded me of the traffickers”

This disabled Syrian refugee boy promised resettlement in UK in 2018 has died waiting to be transferred while living in awful conditions in Lebanon. I raised his case with @ukhomeoffice multiple times as did his UK lawyers. His case is not unique (THREAD) independent.co.uk/news/world/mid…
2. The little boy’s family repeatedly warned they could not afford to pay for his full medical care for cerebral palsy or food or clothes or warmth - they live in Lebanon in the grips of the world’s economic collapse. Food and medical costs have risen five and six fold in an year
3. They told me in December they were forced to scavenge through bins to find food or live off herbs+ oil. I have raised their case with the Home Office 4 times. Their lawyer at @DuncanLewis has too. Even after the boy died in February they are *still* waiting for a transfer date

British citizen @alaa AbdelFattah, a prominent activist jailed and tortured in a maximum security prison in #Egypt, has bid goodbye to his family as he enters the 2nd month of a hunger strike demanding a consular visit. His family fear for his life (THREAD) independent.co.uk/news/world/mid…
2. Since 2019 Alaa not been allowed books, exercise, to know the time, to see the sun. He has been banned from sending letters to his family & from receiving a bed sheet and a t-shirt. He has only drunk water and rehydration salts since April 2 when he started the hunger strike
3. He has spent most of the last 10 years behind bars & is currently serving a 5year sentence following a trial labelled a “sham” by rights groups. He was convicted on charges of spreading false news after he shared posts that were critical of terrible prison conditions in #Egypt

The government has condemned #refugees who cross the channel by boat saying they should apply through safe legal routes. But @maybulman & I found out 2000 refugees promised resettlement by the UK years ago have been abandoned in appalling conditions independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
2/ At least 460 of those promised resettlement live in #Lebanon that’s in the grips of one of the worst economic collapses in modern history. Among them are Syrian refugees who told me they are forced to forage in dumpsters for food, face eviction &can’t get life-saving medicines
3/ 2 families I met were promised resettlement in 2018 but nothing has happened. One has 2 severely emaciated children with cerebral palsy. They have to borrow money to pay for medicines to keep them alive. The other can’t afford the medicine or nappies for her disabled daughter

This footage being shared from Tel Aviv is insane (it’s not mine so can’t verify it). Reports of 130 rockets being fired from #Gaza at Tel Aviv right now
Over 80 rockets were fired toward Tel Aviv from Gaza, the spokesperson for Israel’s police Mickey Rosenfeld just told me.
There were two hits, one hitting an empty bus in Holon and one on Rishon LeTsiyon, both south of Tel Aviv. “Security is at the highest alert” he said
After tonight’s unprecedented (out of war time, can I say that?) rocket barrage on Tel Aviv I cannot see how this will de-escalate any time soon. I am so very worried about the coming weeks.
