I've been sent a photo of leaflet I'm told was dropped on Gaza City this morning - it says those who don't evacuate northern Gaza could be considered "an accomplice of a terrorist organisation". To be clear there's no obligation for civilians to evacuate even if they get an evacuation order, they are still protected under international law. Waiting for comment from the military.
Just to be clear - I’ve spoken to a family member of the person who took the photo of the leaflet - it appears consistent with other photos being shared online. Have reached out to the Israeli military to ask them for comment & confirmation. So far no response.

Exclusive: 100s of young party-goers have been killed or are missing feared kidnapped to Gaza by Hamas militants, who attacked a festival yesterday. Among them is Brit Jake Marlowe. Me & @natalielisbona spoke to witnesses who survived, relatives, friends independent.co.uk/news/world/mid… 2. The witness accounts are frightening. At around 6.30am a rocket barrage started, the event was interrupted as everyone hit the floor. The problem was most people at this festival had no transport, they came on buses. They had no way to get to safety.

Israel is famed for being the birthplace of world’s most powerful surveillance software. It has eyes & a blockade on Gaza, that is only 42km long. In Gaza the one constant is the Israeli observation drones in the sky. But no one saw this coming. Analysis: independent.co.uk/news/world/mid… 2. Peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians have long been dead in the water, any glimmer of reigniting the idea of a two-state solution will now be extinguished. Some have argued Israel played up existential threat of Hamas. From now on Israel will cite 7 October.

The Kakhovka dam exploding unleashed the waters of one of Europe's largest reservoirs over South Ukraine and turned everything upstream into a desert. This sparked disease, destruction locally and may trigger global hunger. The nightmare is just beginning independent.co.uk/news/world/eur… 2. The main photo is Olha on her lands, below inside her home. I've tweeted about her and her kittens before. She lost everything, her farmlands are rotten mud. This is the case for countless farms, which will impact the ability of Ukraine -breadbasket of the world- to make food

For last 1.5 months I’ve been investigating Olenivka a Russian prison where civilians are apparently disappeared, & uncovered evidence of potential war crimes. In middle of digging into it, on 29 July, an explosion there killed over 50 Ukrainian POWs (🧵) independent.co.uk/news/world/eur… 2. There are dozens of civilian inmates effectively vanished. I interviewed 4 civilian ex-detainees & their relatives as well as family members of civilians and POWs who are still believed to be inside. Families only find out their loved ones are inside from released cell mates

The war in Ukraine threatens to unleash an “unprecedented wave” of global hunger & destitution according to the UN. I travelled to Donbas, Kharkiv, Dnipro& Kyiv to meet farmers trying to harvest under shelling, missile fire & recent Russian occupation (🧵)independent.co.uk/news/world/eur… 2. Right on cue, a shell landed in the field behind us as we spoke to this farmer in Donetsk (L) about the advancing frontline. In Dnipro while talking to a farmer, air defence shot down a missile above our heads (as seen in the pic). In Kharkiv the sound of shelling was constant

I interviewed 3 of the asylum seekers supposed to be onboard Tuesday’s failed flight to Rwanda. One told me he was forced into a restraining harness on the plane. Officers pushed him to the ground& put a knee on his head, he couldn’t breathe w/ @maybulman independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi… 2. The man in the restraining harness was witnessed by 2 other asylum seekers we separately interviewed. I was sent a video recording of a phone call the man made to a friend where he’s screaming in pain. 1 of the asylum seekers said harness was “like what you’d use for a dog”

This disabled Syrian refugee boy promised resettlement in UK in 2018 has died waiting to be transferred while living in awful conditions in Lebanon. I raised his case with @ukhomeoffice multiple times as did his UK lawyers. His case is not unique (THREAD) independent.co.uk/news/world/mid… 2. The little boy’s family repeatedly warned they could not afford to pay for his full medical care for cerebral palsy or food or clothes or warmth - they live in Lebanon in the grips of the world’s economic collapse. Food and medical costs have risen five and six fold in an year

The government has condemned #refugees who cross the channel by boat saying they should apply through safe legal routes. But @maybulman & I found out 2000 refugees promised resettlement by the UK years ago have been abandoned in appalling conditions independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi… 2/ At least 460 of those promised resettlement live in #Lebanon that’s in the grips of one of the worst economic collapses in modern history. This footage being shared from Tel Aviv is insane (it’s not mine so can’t verify it). Reports of 130 rockets being fired from #Gaza at Tel Aviv right now Over 80 rockets were fired toward Tel Aviv from Gaza, the spokesperson for Israel’s police Mickey Rosenfeld just told me.
There were two hits, one hitting an empty bus in Holon and one on Rishon LeTsiyon, both south of Tel Aviv. “Security is at the highest alert” he said

Rocket fire has been almost constant in Ashkelon -third time diving for cover in 10 mins. But at least there is a warning siren and cover here. In Gaza families don’t have warnings or anywhere to hide and the death toll shows that. Civilians on both sides are terrified. Meanwhile footage coming out of Gaza is horrific. Screaming children with missing limbs, crying for their parents. The video is too graphic to share.

Massive massive explosion just rocked #Lebanon. We are in the mountains and heard first explosion then the blast wave which literally pushed us fall to our knees. No idea. But there is massive mushroom cloud. Absolute chaos in #Beirut. Shattered shop fronts, injured people staggering around, alarms going off, ambulances trying to get to hospitals, the floor is glistening with shattered glass. In all my years of covering wars I have never experienced a blast like this. #Lebanon

Exclusive: "Serious structural problems" in #Israel's military mean "masses of targets" in #Gaza are bombed without proper intelligence evaluations killing&maiming civilians, personnel told me. They said intel is often old, there's no visual check before (1)independent.co.uk/news/world/mid… 2. The #Israel airmen told me a culture of “destroy, destroy, destroy” rewards personnel for identifying fresh targets in #Gaza rather than checking the validity of 1000s already in the database, known as the “bank”. Sometimes the intelligence is over a year old. #Gaza

The question is how did Baghdadi get to and survive in Barisha, #Idlib 20 mins from the border with Turkey, (with nearby Turkish bases) surrounded by rival Jihadi leaders with a $25 million price tag on his head? Or maybe that’s the point... he didn’t survive. This is a potential location of the US raid on the Baghdadi compound, if you look at unconfirmed footage from the ground. It’s just south west of Barisha #Idlib #Syria
