People really can be made to do anything against their own interests

Govt doesn't care about your mounting health damage from Covid infections & reinfections; it won't be paying for your declining health. You will, via Telus

When you don't wear a mask indoors, it's dark sci-fi.
As someone who works in communication and strategy, I'm actually in awe of the success of BC's communication campaigns on Covid, which involved taking a garden variety PHO and beatifying her into a saint to pull off a larger policy of few measures & public openness to infection.
Despite international press detailing the grimness of Sweden's model of sacrificing many so society could stay "open," Henry openly stated she was following the "Swedish model but with fewer deaths" (we later learned BC was simply under-counting deaths) & BCers fell into line.
I was just away in a BC region where no mask was seen indoors anywhere other than mine, even while we're in the midst of well-publicized health system breakdown.

The sheer ease with which govt has been able to pull this off, by and large with corporate media help, is impressive.
We all know which predatory characters will swoop in and steal the spoils of any health system breakdown - the large corporate actors who will mop up in the coming privatization of health, a very dangerous development in light of the coming crises we face as a society. #Telus
What has been instructive for me, as a communications professional who regularly has to come up against govt PR campaigns far more well-funded than ours on many issues (#SiteC, fracking, deforestation, housing & RE devt), is govt's sheer adeptness at... manipulating you.
This govt can't pull off what most people would view as good governing - things are clearly falling apart. All crises are surprisingly poorly handled from heat dome to health system. But the one thing this govt is good at (despite a few bad moves, eg BC museum) is grim, adept PR.
I mean, the bulk of BCers still think #SiteC is "clean energy" & will "electrify" fracking & LNG & this will be "Clean LNG." This would have been sci-fi-level brainwash even if #SiteC really were to be used for that, but it's not. LNG was switched to being gas-powered in 2018.
Yes, all of this can only be pulled off with a seemingly somnolent but more accurately corporate-entangled media, but govt's PR expertise includes expert mgmt of media, esp the bait of media access to ministers in exchange for favourable press. We call this access journalism.
Anyway, in spite of my almost inexpressibly low opinion of this fauxgressive, corporate-captured NDP govt, I must give credit for what they've pulled off. Despite my irritation with the BC public - ever happy to be misled - the blame (er, credit) really goes to Geoff Meggs & co.

This morning, the civil/mechanical engineer has some further worries about #SiteC re: its design. I'll screenshot what he wrote (you can also read it in the Alt text).

His remarks arose from seeing this recent #SiteC construction photo from @BCHydro. Site diagram for reference. Photo of the Site C dam under construction, showing the &quoArtist's drawing of completed Site C dam, showing an L-shape
@bchydro We invite anyone from @bchydro to respond to this civil engineer's concerns. Too many engineering/ construction experts have raised red flags about #SiteC's safety. The dam has already failed during construction so their fears are built on facts more solid than the dam. #bcpoli Photo of the Site C dam under construction, showing the &quoThis photo is a rear view of the buttresses showing the exca
@bchydro A few further remarks from an engineer: "Another thing we don't know is how on earth they'll attach the earthfill dam to the concrete on the north and south ends, esp the south side against the buttress. These are both shear connections... with soft banks..."

WARNING: moving between BC & Alberta?

AVOID Starway Moving Co.

I helped a family move. The company said they'd deliver everything by July 2. It wasn't delivered til last night, July 19. For two weeks they lied about where things were, wouldn't answer phone calls or emails...
AVOID AVOID AVOID.

After 2 weeks I searched Twitter & found someone else who'd had the same problem, the same lying & runaround, until they reported them to Better Business Bureau. I finally did the same which seemed to trigger delivery. But Starway is a nightmare. Do not use.
A family with few resources & small children spent 20 days sleeping on the floor in a house in a strange town with none of their belongings - no beds, nothing. And the moving company wouldn't answer phones or explain where their stuff was. They had no idea if they'd see it again.

Twitter has locked my account, saying that this tweet violates Twitter rules - which it does not. ImageImage
Oddly my tweet seems to have gone through, so perhaps Twitter unlocked me shortly after it locked me. Regardless it seems someone reported me for... an accurate tweet. Covid DOES cause immune disregulation - as Public Health Canada admitted today.
.Hi @TwitterSupport @Twitter: Restore my tweet that you deleted immediately please. It's in your email below.

Emailing me to say my account is locked (when oddly it's not) because I tweeted Covid misinformation (I clearly didn't) is wrong. You need to fix your moderation. Screenshot of email from Tw...

Had another interesting exchange with my former gas pipeline engineer friend this morning on #TMX & #CGL. You may recall he has high-level Cdn & internat'l experience designing/building pipelines. He's upset Canada would dump failing #TMX onto First Nations.. #cdnpoli #bcpoli
..Engineer: "First Nations groups are now competing to buy #TMX, but with the “repair” from the recent washout sitting on sharp rock, I assume, since they haven't shown us a new sand bed, the rush is on for the gov’t to get rid of it to the first buyer..." #bcpoli
...Engineer: "The Canadian govt needs a buyer with enough money ($25 billion) and is willing to take on the liability for both pipelines [old pipeline and new larger #TMX twinned line] when they fail... of course, the buyer won’t know that..." #bcpoli #cdpoli

How many warnings that are then proven true is it going to take before people stop with this kneejerk "you're Chicken Little, the sky isn't falling" reaction every $#%* time they're warned?

The BC public & #bcpoli were warned about Delta & Omicron & ignored it. And this time?
In case you didn't catch it in the tweet quoted above: the BA.2 variant is TRIPLING every two weeks.

Guess the pandemic is over. And if it turns out to have longer term effects on yourself and others, will we hear a mea culpa, or...?
All we are doing with this incessant "let er rip" & "it's just a cold or flu" & this removal of mandates is building a huge factory to produce more & worse variants.

Even with the current variants we're seeing long term vascular and other damage, brain shrinkage..

Since BC is some sort of Brave New World where adults are treated like infants who must be shielded from data & facts, we must look elsewhere. If Covid is rising this fast in S. Korea, which has had far better pandemic mgmt, then likely in BC too #bcpoli
Here's a similar graph for Germany, showing Covid cases spiking fast: #bcpoli
Hong Kong is seeing one of its word Covid waves yet. "Hong Kong public hospitals are running out of beds again amid the fifth and worst Covid-19 wave, with 10 hospitals exceeding their capacity on Sunday." hongkongfp.com/2022/03/15/cov…
