Grossi @rafaelmgrossi and his team of 14 experts are back in Vienna from a risky visit to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Grossi says that he is mostly concerned about the physical integrity of the plant as well as about the power supply of the plant. #ZNPP 1/
He said that he witnessed holes and marks on the plant that are due to the shelling. He said that this situation was "unacceptable". He also expressed worry about the power supply and the impact a disruption could have on the cooling system. These are his 2 main concerns. 2/
He said that a team of 6 people is staying at the plant until Sun or Mon. Out of them, 2 IAEA experts will then remain at the plant permanently. He said that this continued presence was important to "stabilise" the situation and to ensure "impartial and neutral" information. 3/
I asked him to describe the atmosphere between the Ukrainian staff at the plant and the Russian occupiers. He said that "the plant is operating. There is a professional relationship between the nuclear experts. But there are latent tensions for obvious reasons." 4/
Grossi also said that he will issue a more detailed @iaeaorg report about the situation at the plant early next week. This is something to watch. 5/
Overall my impression was that @rafaelmgrossi tried to strike a balance between explaining the potentially dangerous situation while not creating panic. He did emphasise that he was able to see everything he needed to see at the plant.
