I wish I had a more hopeful message for young people suffering from anorexia. I wish I could say something more encouraging: “the revulsion with yourself will subside, my sweet, let yourself rest.” Alas I cannot say that. The revulsion doesn’t subside. It only morphs & twists 1/

There’ll still be days you wish to claw your way out of your own skin with disgust at your own self; days you don’t want to get out of bed because life doesn’t seem worth it; days where every mouthful of food is a struggle. Days where your mind is tiring, too tiring. 2/

But persevere, my sweet. It is better to live with the disgust and sadness than give in to them. Eat; bodies need fuel. Remember that you can live a fuller life than one dictated by food - however terrifying and needless that feels. 3/

The feelings & anorexic impulses may not go away - such strong beasts. But almost nothing else, my sweet, will be as hard as resisting them. I often think this - the rest of life is easy in comparison to surviving anorexia. The hardest part is continuing to survive it. 4/
