The government has a responsibility to inform, educate and support the public.

Today’s presser is yet another example of the @bcndp sending mixed messages about #COVID19. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC
They continue to send mixed messages about the risks and impacts of #COVID19, telling the public that it is a ‘mild disease’ and that ‘we are emerging from the pandemic'.

We know this pandemic is not over. COVID continues to impact our health and well-being and the economy. 2/
People in BC are dying of COVID, and more and more are enduring the serious impacts of long COVID. We are seeing the impacts and ongoing toll on our #healthcare system. 3/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC
After telling people this virus is 'mild' and to wash their hands with no clear indication that #COVID19 is an airborne virus, it should surprise no one that people are choosing not to get a vaccine because of this government’s insistence that this pandemic is over. 4/ #bcpoli
We need to see masking, improved ventilation and filtration, and clear reporting from public health, in conjunction with vaccination efforts.

We need a public education campaign so people understand the ongoing risks of airborne #COVID19 transmission, and #longcovid. 5/ #bcpoli
As long as @bcndp continues to ignore their responsibility to inform and protect the public we will continue to see staffing shortages in hospitals, schools, and ambulance and ferry services. 6/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC
Individuals might have a personal responsibility to take care of themselves, but elected officials have a personal responsibility to take care of all of us and we've not seen the @bcndp step up and hold their end of the deal. 7/7 #bcpoli #COVID19BC

Germany has one of the top ranked #healthcare systems in the world, while Canada’s is teetering. We both dedicate similar amounts of funding to universal health care.

What explains this discrepancy? Soaring admin costs is one reason.🧵 1/#bcpoli #cdnpoli
biv.com/article/2022/0…
Germany’s Pop. is 75M, Canada's is 38M.

Germany has one #healthcare administrator for every 15,545 citizens. Canada has one healthcare administrator for every 1,415 citizens

In other words, Canada has 10 times as many administrators as Germany, for fewer citizens. 2/ #bcpoli
This means that much of the money we’re spending on #healthcare in Canada isn’t going directly to services.

While some administrators are essential, excessive bureaucracy creates inefficiencies within our health-care system. 3/ #bcpoli #cdnpoli

The role of the provincial govt and public health is to reduce illness and protect people’s wellbeing. The @PHSAofBC recently published updated guidance for health-care providers that emphasizes risk from aerosol transmission that lingers in the air. 1/
The @PHSAofBC recommends uncrowded, well-ventilated spaces and masking in this updated clinical guidance.

We are sending our children to school into the exact opposite scenario. The @bcndp must immediately extend these guidelines to schools, universities and public settings. 2/
Infections are currently 100 times higher than what is being reported.

Children are going back to school without effective protections from an airborne virus. Govt's refusal to follow the science will continue to overrun our hospitals and put our children at risk. 3/ #bcpoli

This week I attended the Peace & Unity Summit hosted by the Wet’suwet’en office. We were given the gift of being on the yintah, as witnesses. We rafted down the Wedzin Kwa. We drank from the river, saw an ancient village site and witnessed the first salmon return. 1/ #bcpoli
That same day we were under surveillance by the RCMP and CGL. It was unmissable - every turn, even outside of the Healing House, they were there watching side by side. We were photographed, videotaped, and had a drone set on us. We witnessed a person get arrested. 2/ #bcpoli
This industrial operation continues to disenfranchise Indigenous people on their territory every single day. We witnessed that. Over the next 3 days we heard similar stories from chiefs, elders, and leaders about their fight to defend their territory across BC. 3/ #bcpoli

Telling the truth builds trust. Plain and simple.

As people in BC struggle with overlapping crises this @bcndp gov’t tries to pretend things are fine.

Today I asked @jjhorgan if he could speak honestly about the situation we find ourselves in. He did not answer. 1/ #bcpoli
Towns burned down. Roads are yet to be rebuilt. Farmers’ fields are flooded. 597 people died from a heat dome. People can’t afford food, or rent, or gas. People can’t get their cancer test results b/c they have no family doc. Toxic drugs are killing day after day. 2/ #bcpoli
Today @mikefarnworthbc stood and described my question as “rambling” and “offensive” - choosing to belittle me instead of respond to the reality of how British Columbians are feeling. 3/ #bcpoli

We have been raising this issue in the Legislature since February.

Two-tiered healthcare goes against the fundamental principles of the Canadian health system. 1/ #bcpoli #cdnpoli #healthcare #BCHealth theprovince.com/news/local-new…
People are being asked to pay $4000+ for “premier” services like full annual check-ups, diagnostics, physiotherapists, and dietitians with Telus Health. This government is allowing healthcare delivery to be corporatized. 2/ #bcpoli #healthcare #BCHealth
When I asked @adriandix about people paying out of pocket for diagnostic services and preventative screenings, he said it’s fine, and that they are “non-medically necessary services, beyond the healthcare system”. 3/ #bcpoli #healthcare #BCHealth

I applaud the provincial and federal governments for decriminalizing personal possession of drugs in BC.

The BC Coroners Death Review Panel made it clear that #decriminalization is needed in order to ensure that people can access services without stigma. 1/ #bcpoli #cdnpoli
But this announcement comes with a caveat.

BC requested a limit for personal possession of 4.5 g, but the federal government only approved a limit of 2.5g.

Health experts and advocates argued for a higher threshold, based on data and evidence. 2/ #bcpoli #decriminalization
The intent of #Decriminalization is to reduce stigma, but when possession limits are low, it can result in higher potency of drugs, potentially causing more harm and a fear of seeking help. 3/ #bcpoli #EndTheStigma #safesupply
