🤨"Putin promised we’d each get a house and two slaves."— Russian soldiers told villagers in #Balakliya🇺🇦
Most of those liberated in #Kharkiv area villages were elderly, likely unable to flee. They had difficulty talking about the Russian soldiers. Some couldn’t speak w/o tears.
These stories of survivors reveal so much about the poor living conditions in Russia under Putin's kleptocracy.
Russian soldiers were shocked that Ukrainian villages had running water & bathrooms in homes, like in cities. "They said they were going to bring their families here.”
Looting was rampant in occupied #Balakliya🇺🇦. Russian soldiers ransacked every store in town & dragged out everything they could. A group of soldiers from Buryatia went into people’s homes & took everything they could find. They stole cars, computer equipment, even linoleum!
Russians kidnapped & tortured people in the police station. Some haven't been seen since.
Detainees were beaten & tortured w/ electric shocks. Russian soldiers would shoot at the wall above their heads to torment them.
When Russians fled #Balakliya🇺🇦 they left people locked up.

Disturbing trend becomes 'staggeringly common' in Putin's wartime #Russia: @npwcnn reports on the death of #Lukoil Chair Ravil #Maganov—at least the 6th high-profile Russian #energy/#oil executives who Russia says died by suicide cnn.com/videos/world/2…
@npwcnn Lukoil head Ravil Maganov, seen being honored by Putin, died on Thursday after falling from his Moscow hospital window. Suicide, #Russia reported. The energy giant said he died after a severe illness. Lukoil under his leadership came out against the war in Ukraine early in March.
@npwcnn Lukoil's Maganov's death makes him the 6th prominent Russian #oil/gas executive to die from "suicide" in almost as many months.
4 dead execs from Russian state #gas giant Gazprom, currently at the forefront of #Russia's #energy battles with the West since invading #Ukraine.
Hate to see Trump propagandists on @Acosta. They twist language, weaponize ambiguity, conflate words/issues to confuse/sow doubt.
Election denying Chad Wolf went from "There are reports of irregularities, illegalities & fraud," to "Drop boxes were illegal" to "There was fraud"🤢
@Acosta Conflation is a propaganda tactic. Wolf conflated "irregularities"—fuzzy but sounds nefarious—& "illegalities"—bogus arguments that LOST in court! Propagandists pair them, repeat ad nauseam. They're bad-faith interlocutors—not answering Qs but drumming disinformation into brains.
@Acosta Acosta gave Chad Wolf many opportunities to tell the truth. Wolf preferred propaganda & lies. He even discredited the agency he headed, saying DHS CISA only declared the election secure from FOREIGN threats—not voter fraud! Propagandists prove nothing but their lack of integrity.
😬Ruh roh. "At least one lawyer" signed an apparently false declaration (under penalty of perjury presumably) declaring to DOJ in June that Trump had returned EVERYTHING marked classified. nytimes.com/2022/08/13/us/…
Getting Trump to cooperate seems like pulling teeth. A year to return 15 boxes. Even after a GJ subpoena in spring: "The former president was repeatedly urged by advisers to return what remained, despite what they described as his desire to continue to hold onto some documents."
Quite the buried lede >> Trump tried to intimidate the Attorney General, getting an aide to contact DOJ to send Garland a message: that "the country is on fire"—enraged by the search.
Trump disclosed it! The guy is still tampering w/ investigations & obstructing justice!
🔥@MichaelCBender on key context of FBI search of Mar-a-Lago: "[Trump] is considering an unusually early campaign announcement—in part to shield himself against the torrent of bad news coming out from numerous investigations into his actions before & after the 2020 election."
@MichaelCBender Bender: Republican view of MAL search/DOJ investigation is a "sharp reversal" from what they said in 2016, when a Dem prez nominee was under investigation for personal email server. Trump & GOP repeatedly said an FBI investigation was disqualifying. That's not their stance today.
@MichaelCBender Snippet of the insane hypocrisy of Republicans condemning FBI search/DOJ investigation of Trump—not even on a ballot for 2+years—when in 2016, they said a mere investigation was automatically disqualifying.
GOP has one standard for Democrats, and no standards for Republicans.
In Russian state media's report on prisoner swap talks, Sputnik reported that the US demanded the arrest of hockey player Alexander Ovechkin, to exchange for Brittney Griner.
That's crazy, right? Who in the State Dept. would say that?? So I clicked on the link to find out…
I followed the link, and there it was: Radio Sputnik reporting "Americans demand arrest of Ovechkin in exchange for Griner" (google translated)
Then I scrolled down to read who in the world made this crazy offer…
Turns out, it was ONE twitter user who joked about swapping Ovechkin for Griner.
Russia's propaganda media went from saying "The US demanded.." to "Americans demand" to "American Twitter users suggested" to just some guy on Twitter's joke. Sputnik is so crazy and misleading.
🔥#Ukraine Foreign Minister @DmytroKuleba: No one should be fooled. Whatever they may say, #Russia remains focused on war and aims to ruin #Ukraine and shatter the West. Putin will not stop until he is stopped & Russia suffers a major battleground defeat. nytimes.com/2022/07/29/opi…
@DmytroKuleba "Military assistance to Ukraine is not charity. It is a necessary investment in Europe’s long-term security. The Ukrainian Army will emerge…one of the continent’s most capable military forces…[&] will devote itself to…protecting democracy from any authoritarian encroachment."
@DmytroKuleba "With global support, Ukraine has already stabilized the front line and is preparing to regain control over [occupied areas]… In recent weeks, Russia has failed to make any significant gains. We are determined to turn the tide in our favor & push Russian forces out of our land."
