This is a fine piece from @IAPonomarenko about the tremendous feat of arms achieved by #Ukraine over the past couple of weeks. However, there is still a way to go in this war. Some thoughts on a Saturday morning as I depart Warsaw. 1/16
2/ First, the momentum generated by the Kharkiv offensive is continuing to bear fruit in the north east and east of #Ukraine. The Ukrainians, having surprised the Russians, generated shock in both the soldiers and the command chain of the Russian Army.
3/ As good military leaders know, it is during this period of ‘shock’ where the most gains can be made in territory, and in destroying or capturing the enemy. The Ukrainians, while weary now, have fully appreciated this and are exploiting Russian disarray for as long as it lasts.
4/ And, as magnificent as this offensive has been, all offensives eventually run out of steam. This can be because the enemy is able to re-form a coherent defence, exhaustion of friendly troops or because further exploitation is not worth the costs in people and material.
5/ We should expect the Ukrainian forces in this Kharkiv offensive to enter a period of consolidation at some point in the coming days or weeks. But the damage they have done to the Russian Army, and its invasion strategy, is significant.
6/ The Russian position in the east is in peril. Continued Ukrainian advances are placing logistic supply routes back to Russia at risk, while also forcing a reorientation of the Russian posture in the Luhansk oblast.
7/ But the entire Russian conquest of the Donbas is now in peril. Further Russian advances are unlikely, given their higher priority of realigning their forces to protect against the Ukrainian advances from the north.
8/ In the south, the Ukrainians are making steady progress. Many Russians are trapped west of the Dnipro. And those on the eastern side need to balance enhancing their defences there, providing fire support to their forces west of the river, & potentially redeploying to the east.
9/ And, of course, the Russians need to think about enhancing their defences in Crimea. It is in play. The Ukrainian President has said so publicly. And it is Ukrainian territory.
10/ Finally, this has shredded any remaining reputation the Russian Army had as an effective fighting force. By almost any measure of tactical, operational or strategic effectiveness, the Russian Army has either failed or performed extraordinarily poorly.
11/ In the strategic information space, the Russians just keep looking worse & worse. They are failures on the battlefield, & the Izium mass graves again show that Russian Army as a brutal, murderous gang that prefers to attack innocent civilians than fight real soldiers.
12/ No wonder Putin looked like a dejected subordinate at his recent meeting with Indian and Chinese leaders. Even they are embarrassed to be seen with him in public.
13/ Despite this, the Ukrainians still need military and economic assistance from the West. While rightfully proud of their military, and confident in ultimate victory over Russia, they need our assistance.
14/ Key areas of assistance include air and missile defences to ‘close the sky’; more tanks and armoured vehicles (in battalion sets, not in small numbers); long range fires; and soldier personal equipment.
15/ In conclusion, we have witnessed a superb demonstration of modern military operations in the past two weeks. The Ukrainians, as I have asserted before, are the masters of modern warfare. But we need to give them the tools to get the job done, and defeat the Russians. End

There is a lot going on in #Ukraine at the moment. The macro story is that Russia appears to have lost the initiative at every level. But there is also an interesting story to be told about Ukrainian campaign planning. 1/24 Image
2/ The Ukrainian offensive in the north east is continuing to exploit a bumbling and incoherent Russian defensive scheme to the east of Kharkiv. Thousands of square kilometres of Ukrainian territory have been recaptured, and many towns and their inhabitants have been liberated. Image
3/ Even the Oskil Rver defensive line, rapidly established by the Russians, appears to be crumbling. Deception and operational art have been central to Ukrainian preparations for their achieving surprise against the Russians in this new phase of the war.

An updated thread on the wartime #leadership demonstrated by @ZelenskyyUa – with a focus on visiting troops in the field, particularly in the wake of the successful Kharkiv offensive. 1/10 🧵
2/ His visits have many purposes. First, it allows @ZelenskyyUa to get a feel for the morale & capability of his military in the field. You can read reports, but there is no substitute for walking the ground with leaders & soldiers at the tip of the spear.
3/ Another reason for visits by @ZelenskyyUa is to engage with junior soldiers in the field, to inspire them, recognise their sacrifice and to reiterate the purpose of their sacrifices. Purpose is the most important thing a leader can provide.

A good update on the Ukrainian offensive in the north east from @TheStudyofWar and @criticalthreats. Some thoughts on the current situation. 1/12 🧵
2/ What we have seen over the last few days has been a superb feat of arms, underpinned by good planning, intelligence, #leadership and above all - battlefield courage from the Ukrainian armed forces.
3/ As highlighted over the last few days, winning can become a habit, especially when you fight smart and lead well. This is what we have seen from the Ukrainians throughout the war, but particularly in this northeastern campaign.

The last 48 hours have seen some stunning battlefield developments in #Ukraine. Ukrainian operations in the northeast continue to exploit its penetration of Russian defences. 1/18 🧵
2/ There is much that remains unclear about these offensives. But #Ukraine clearly achieved surprise against the Russians in the #Kharkiv region. Deception has been central to all Ukrainian preparations for this phase of the war.
3/ That it was able to exploit this opportunity indicates that Ukraine had an excellent plan to deceive Russian overhead collection assets as well as their tactical reconnaissance and surveillance.

The last 48 hours have seen quite a lot happening in #Ukraine. While the southern offensive continues, the Ukrainian operations around Kharkiv have achieved a significant penetration of Russian defences on the Kupiansk-Izium axis. What might this mean? 1/25
2/ I would caveat that much remains unclear about these offensives. And, as every military leader knows, first reports can be wrong! But, there is sufficient information - without compromising operational security - to draw initial conclusions about operations around #Kharkiv.
3/ It is clear that the Ukrainians have achieved surprise against the Russians in the #Kharkiv region. The Ukrainians attacked what appears to have been a thinly defended area and have achieved a significant penetration into Russian rear areas.

Throughout the Russian invasion of #Ukraine, I have watched and written about Russian #strategy in the war. In this thread, given ongoing Ukrainian offensives, I examine whether Russia has ceded the initiative to Ukraine. 1/25 🧵
2/ Since 24 February, Russian #strategy has evolved continuously. Putin’s Plan A, seven months ago, was for a lightening military operation conducted on multiple fronts to shock the Ukrainian military and government into submission and do it before the west could help.
3/ The plucky, courageous Ukrainians called their bluff and defeated the Russians in the north. And in the northeast. And rallied international support for military, humanitarian and economic support.
