#DOPPELGANGER: How Russia-based actors cloned legitimate media outlets from multiple countries (๐ฉ๐ช๐ฌ๐ง๐ซ๐ท๐ฎ๐น๐ฑ๐ป๐บ๐ฆ) to spread disinformation designed to undermine the support for Ukraine.
This independent investigation is solely based on open-source information and is built upon the first leads from @tonline. We also would also like to thank @AFPfaktencheck for reaching out to us.
The - still ongoing - information operation aims at:
Digging further into the mediaโs findings, we could confirm that actors based in Russian time zones and using Russian as their working language were behind this operation. However, we couldnโt attribute it to a specific group.
We partnered with the non-profit foundation @Qur1ium to identify +50 domain names impersonating legitimate media, all of them hiding their traces behind Cloudflare.
How did they impersonate authentic media providers? First, they bought and managed domain names similar to the media they cloned. And they copy-pasted their design to trick Internet users.
This campaign targeted social media users with direct links to manipulated articles spreading narratives around "How great life in Siberia is" and "German fridges are empty due to EU sanctions."
For example, a fake Bild article claimed that Ukrainian refugees burnt down their guest's home in Germany after attempting to set fire to a Russian flag. Several fact-checkers debunked this false information. factuel.afp.com/doc.afp.com.32โฆ
The operation also amplified a fake article falsely asserting that there is proof showing that the Ukrainian army staged the Bucha massacre. This fake story was run on clones of ๐ฌ๐ง The Guardian, ๐ฎ๐น Ansa and ๐ซ๐ท 20minutes.
Actors conducting this operation used fake polls, created poorly translated videos, sponsored many Facebook ads with burner pages, and more.
While the set-up of this operation is sophisticated, its impact seems rather low, on the verge of counterproductive, with people openly mocking the campaign on Facebook.
Part of the engagement came from fake accounts using AI-generated profile pics. Another surprise is the very engaged community working in ๐ฉ๐ช Germany but living in Corbeil-Essonnes (Paris suburbs). Our guess is that theyโre engaging with cloned media during their long commute.
The publicly available data raises doubts about the success of #Doppelganger. It is troubling that this operation still goes on after months of breaching EU laws (trademark, GDPR, etc.), likely without consequences for its authors. This is where improvements need to happen.
Last but not least, our feeling working on this investigation was dual: on the one hand, some sadness and feeling of being in the book by @peterpomeranzev, โNothing is true and everything is possible.โ
And on the other hand, the poor content translation into French and some other mistakes reminded us of the laughably low-level of some information operations.
Leading us to merge Peter Pomerantsev with @OfficialHIMYMโs Barney Stinson into: "Nothing is true and everything is possimpible".
The possimpible, i.e. that place where sophisticated IT systems go along with thinking that putting a frog and a castle on your profile will rally French people against sanctions.
Today, the EU DisinfoLab publishes an Open Letter signed by over 50 leading experts on disinformation calling on EU policy-makers to tackle disinformation head-on in the Digital Services Act ๐disinfo.eu/advocacy/open-โฆ
Co-signatories include researchers, educators, journalists, academics, digital rights & democracy activists, campaigners against hate speech and online gender-based violence. There is a tendency in Brussels to frame the question of legislating on disinformation as a trade-off between free expression or authoritarian control of our online environment. But there is a middle ground.
#Thread: How YouTubeโs inaction facilitated the spread of the French COVID-19 conspiracy documentary Hold-up, the Plandemic โร la franรงaiseโ.
The French COVID-19 conspiracy movie Hold-up was released on 11 November 2020 & started to circulate on YouTube that same day. French fact-checker AFP Factuel flagged in Hold-Up more than 30 misleading or false claims linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. 2/n
๐ขToday we release our publication "The Many Faces Fighting #Disinformation", a panorama of innovative, multidisciplinary actors safeguarding our information ecosystem. We wanted to understand their successes and their challenges. (1/19)
They are rising to the #disinformation challenge with new types of expertise, like #OSINT, crowdsourcing, and data activism. They explore unusual partnerships and experiment with innovative techniques. This is a new sector taking shape. (2/19)
They also face novel challenges and risks. Despite their critical role in our information ecosystem, many civil society actors in this space struggle to make their voices heard. Their security and sustainability are not assured. (3/19)
New research: Disinformation that wrongly links COVID-19 and 5G technology often remain undetected. @DisinfoEU researcher @NetoSessa examines moderation shortcomings on Twitter and YouTube. Thread โฌ๏ธ (1/8) disinfo.eu/publications/5โฆ
As the pandemic unfolded, @Twitter and @YouTube vowed to remove content that breached their policy guidelines. They pledged to provide the community with reliable and real-time information, in particular regarding disinformation linking 5G technology to the coronavirus. (2/8)
However, we still notice significant time delays and discrepancies in their enforcement. This leads to false information remaining on these platforms for months before it gets labelled or removed (3/8)
#IndianChronicles: Since yesterday, international media have covered our investigation, including BBC, Politico, Le Monde, EFE.
Here is what they found: ๐๐๐
In Brussels, @POLITICOEurope focused on the actors behind EU Chronicle โ the same as behind EP Today last year: Madi Sharma.
They also reveal that MEPs @tobiszowski ๐ต๐ฑ & @marctarabella ๐ง๐ช claim to have been abused by #IndianChronicles.
On @EURACTIV, MEP ๐ง๐ฌ @djambazki, who is cited as one of the authors of EU Chronicle content, declared that he never "submitted any text" and is "looking into legal actions to resolve this issueโ.
REVEALED: Indian Chronicles โ how a massive 15-year influence operation successfully targeted the EU & UN with 750+ fake local media and 10+ zombie-NGOs.
Executive Summary & full report: indianchronicles.eu
Here are the facts ๐ (1/n)
Indian Chroniclesโ key objective is to undermine Pakistan internationally.
To do so, they resurrected dead NGOs at the UN.
They impersonated the EU.
They laundered content produced by fake media to real media - and reached millions in South-Asia & across the world. (2/n)
Our new investigation began with a shocking discovery: @MartinSchulz, former President of the European Parliament, was said to have left politics.
But instead, it seemed he was now heading Canners International, a NGO dedicated to the promotion ofโฆ food in cans ๐ฅซ! (3/n)
