"This is something the ivory tower medical profession needs to realize — #LongCovid is going to push us outside our comfort zone w/ illnesses we can’t define. Because we don’t like when we can’t understand something but we have to get over that" @WesElyMD statnews.com/2022/10/10/a-d…
"With long #Lyme, #MECFS.. I was taught in med school they weren’t real..I used to think those weren’t real. I was just with some med students last week, & I talked to them about long Lyme. And they said we were taught that that’s not real — and these are current med students."
The first thing I say to my fellow #MedTwitter is we’re busy.. I get that.. for #LongCovid, there’s no treatment yet, but you can say to them, “I’ll stick with you as we learn more in the months and years ahead and we’ll figure this out together.” - @WesElyMD
"You know, I'm an old doctor.. if you had told me 2 years ago that I was going to be on social media & Twitter, I would have said, “You’re crazy” But two things happened.. a lot of doctors.. said if you get on Twitter, we can find patients faster. I said fine."
Six months ago, people in the office said you need to get on TikTok & I said, “No, I’m drawing the line.” But there’s this crazy set of misinformation being spread on TikTok.. I thought, “I’m just going to try five videos & see what happens.”
"The brain’s capacity to heal is so much greater than what people give it credit for. We have trillions and trillions of neurons and connections, and these things can regrow. So, if a patient gets this brain fog and they think, 'Oh, my gosh, I’m never going to get back again'"
"I always tell them, do not lose hope.. whether it’s mitochondrial disease or glial cells that have died, or vascular clotting that develops into #LongCovid, your body has this capacity to recover, and you must remain hopeful that you can get through this."
Tremendous humility and compassion from @WesElyMd in this interview -- I 100% agree for majority of #LongCovid patients this all were looking for right now, doctors who believe us, listen to us, and are willing to ride this out and work on it together.

Not so much to ask.

New #LongCovid study:

“Vascular transformation blood biomarkers were significantly elevated in #LongCovid, w/ angiogenesis markers (ANG-1/P-SEL) providing classification accuracy of 96%. Vascular biomarkers hold potential for diagnostics & therapeutics” molmed.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…
“In this study, we measured 16 vascular transformation blood biomarkers obtained from age- and sex-matched Long-COVID outpatients, Ward COVID-19 inpatients, ICU COVID-19 inpatients and healthy control subjects.”
“Our data indicate a unique #LongCovid blood proteome; two vascular transformation biomarkers were identified that distinguished Long-COVID patients from acutely ill COVID-19 inpatients and healthy control subjects (classification accuracy of 96%)”

“Let’s spend 5 good minutes on something it seems our government doesn’t want to talk about.. 30 million adults in the US currently have #LongCovid.. 80% of them are having trouble just doing every day things — and I know because I’m living it”

Powerful segment from @ChrisCuomo
@ChrisCuomo: What worries you most?

@drwilliamli: That the message being sent out is that the pandemic is over, which is what people want to hear — yet it’s not — What we have to do is not focus on the acute infection.. but that 10-30% could get #LongCovid and we don’t know who

Ok how severe is #LongCovid for the up to 1 in 5 infected? We now know:

• 75% experience limitations in their daily activities
• 25% experience severe limitations
• 25% experience no limitations

This means up to 1 in 7 infected experience some disability from infection.
1 in 20 will experience severe disability from infection.
New US federal data — Which almost precisely matches the UK @ONS data

“Most people suffering from #LongCovid are experiencing some trouble performing day-to-day activities, new federal data shows.

Younger adults were more likely to report long COVID than older adults.”abcnews.go.com/Health/people-…
“Additionally, 25% said they were experiencing significant limitations.”

This is 100% consistent with employment data that shows 75% of #LongCovid patients can’t work at same levels prior infection & 25% can’t work at all.

It’s the same numbers every time. This debate is over.

“Nothing is more threatening to who you think you are than a patient with a problem you cannot solve”

Just finished @meghanor amazing book #InvisibleKingdom — incredibly cathartic & informative.

Took like 3 months to get through (listening) but was highly worth it. Image
It’s not “another sick person’s story” — It really disentangles the entire mess we are in — with regards to how we treat & view conditions like #LongCovid, it really helped orientate me — and @meghanor’s story is so painfully relatable. Overall very high quality writing.
The way @meghanor shares the tension of her relationship w husband throughout whole journey is so spot on to what I imagine a lot of people are dealing with — unconditional but completely exhausted support that is sometimes a little zoned out & unsure of when to be suspicious.

It can not be overstated how many people — right now — are dealing with #LongCovid symptoms but have no idea what the hell is going on or what to do.

Every week I’m hearing “Long Covid? Is that what this is? I’ve had new issues for months now.”

We have failed.
If your part of the 98% of the population that’s not on Twitter or in the weeds of the latest Medical Journal publications (which clearly even majority of doctors are not) or an avid health news consumer — HOW THE HELL WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT #LONGCOVID IS??
My gf mom is shook by the experience of standing in line at the grocery store & got into convo w/ woman next to her: “This is my first time out in 8 months. I’ve been sick since infection it’s so weird”

Gf mom: “omg you have a #LongCovid — I’m so sorry.”

Lady: “What’s that?”
