North America and Europe’s flu season is going to be bad - we know because Australia’s flu season last few months was epic bad. ERs are overwhelmed and nurses are breaking down crying. That’s how bad. 😢
Pediatric hospitalizations are already surging in the US. Fever medicines are nearly sold out in Canada. If you don’t think there is a very bad winter coming, and if you don’t act to get protected soon, you are not prepared for what this winter will bring. #BringBackMasks
Fever medication shortages? Yes. Throughout Canada and parts of US.
What happens when you stack flu season and COVID variants surging together? A really bad winter coming… get bivalent booster and flu shot boosted. You will need it. You have been warned.
Ignoring surging cases will only beget more trouble. Vaccines are good but it’s not enough. We need to reinstate other mitigations too. Switzerland’s CDC has. Why won’t our @CDCDirector???

📍HIGHEST FIREARM HOMICIDE IN 50 YEARS—from 2020 to 2021, the % of homicides from firearm increased from 79% to 81% resulting in the **highest % for gun homicide in more than 50 years**! Age 25-44 also has the worst rate of gun homicide. #EndGunViolence

2) An increase of 8.3% gun homicide in just one year is also absolutely insane if you think about it. In just one year!

3) African Americans by far had the highest rate of dying by gun homicide. Often more than 10-20x higher rate than non Hispanic Whites.

Major COVID drug bites the dust—Merck’s #COVID-fighting antiviral #molnupiravir failed to prevent #COVID19 hospitalizations/deaths is a large trial of ~25,000 people, despite drug shortening recovery time & lowering viral load. Damn—COVID19 is a tough nut.

2) Yes #molnupiravir did improve recovery a little— but if you look at the chart, it was mostly just around the 7-12 day mark that the drug had biggest effect, and then the drug seemed to stay parallel and even converge with the placebo group beyond 2 weeks. ➡️benefit didn’t last
3) for the combined endpoint of HOSPITALIZATIONS/DEATHS… no obvious subgroup benefit. There was even a borderline increased risk in the immunocompromised (P for subgroup interaction=0.06, bordeline). Not sure if that is real or bad luck but it’s not good.
