A quick thread on the Christian McCaffrey trade market for the #Panthers…
1. A handful of teams are interested but not pushing hard (yet) to deal for McCaffrey. The interest has been more of a “checking in” with Carolina after the initial #Bills report to see if he’s actually being shopped. At the moment the #Panthers are in a listening mode with CMC.
2. The whole #Bills dalliance with McCaffrey stemmed back to when Buffalo called about him in the offseason. But that never went anywhere and it was totally dead until this point in the season. Even now, the Bills are in more of a monitoring mode than anything. A “call us” mode.
3. In terms of the franchises interested in McCaffrey, I’m told it’s teams that are “a running back away” from either being “complete” - or - being a Super a bowl contending team in 2022. #Bills are interested but slow playing it. I absolutely believe the #49ers fit that mix, too
4. Compensation-wise for McCaffrey, I think the “multiple 1st rounders” chatter is a reflection of what #Panthers owner David Tepper would like (but not what the market is). I don’t believe any team would surrender 2 1sts. Maybe 1 1st rounder + another pick or assets is possible.
5. To be clear, #Panthers aren’t looking to tear down/fire sale. They’ll likely deal a player or two that were “Rhule guys”, but want to keep this young core together. Especially on defense. They also believe McCaffrey is a helpful player for whoever the future coach/young QB is.
6. I think #Panthers deal McCaffrey if a trade yields assets that help the team land one of the “elite” QB prospects in the 2023 draft. If dealing CMC doesn’t produce enough capital to help with that (likely including a 1st rounder), he likely sticks in Carolina past the deadline
6. Here’s the piece I did Monday laying out everything going on with the McCaffrey trade market, which at this moment is more of a staring contest with the #Panthers. I wouldn’t be surprised if this went all the way to the deadline before getting serious. sports.yahoo.com/teams-to-watch…
7. To answer a question: Yes, I think from the right team McCaffrey can draw a 1st round pick. Remember, most teams have 14-15 1st round grades in a draft. The teams going after McCaffrey are aiming to win a SB and pick last in the 1st round. Teams don’t have 32 1st round grades.

1. From what I understand, the #Browns offered the GM position to Berry late last week and the two sides went to work on the contract. The 5-year deal dialing in the same length as HC Kevin Stefanski was of chief importance to Cleveland - making sure the two were tied together.
2. I've been told by a #Browns team source that even before #Vikings exec George Paton pulled out of the process, it was essentially unanimous inside the building that Berry was the right choice for this job and situation. That said, Paton definitely impressed in his interviews.
Quick thread on the Wade Phillips departure with the #Rams...
1. Wade suspected the writing was on the wall when the team parted company with DL coach (and Phillips confidant) Bill Johnson last offseason. There were some indications the defensive staff was going to get younger and more scheme-driven under McVay moving forward.
2. From the team perspective, I think there was some frustration over relying on the fundamentals of playing sound football rather than a premium placed on scheming and changing looks to expose weaknesses. Too much reliance on just beating strength on strength.
1. The coaching search interviews are 100-percent Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones driven. This process won't be broad "group think" by any means and it's ultimately going to come down to how candidates have fared answering questions for Jerry and Stephen.
2. Pliability on the coaching staff is going to be a plus for some candidates. If you're a guy like Mike McCarthy or Marvin Lewis, you may very well need to retain four offensive coaches: OC Kellen Moore, OL coach Marc Colombo, QBs coach Jon Kitna and RBs coach Gary Brown.
A few things triggered the move of the Kaepernick workout:
1.) There was a significant problem with the type of waiver #NFL requested. Kaepernick agreed to sign a normal Pro Day injury waiver. NFL asked for a more complex waiver with clauses about non-guarantees of employment.
2.) Kaepernick’s camp requested to tape the workout alongside the #NFL’s crew. They didn’t trust the NFL being the only ones with the tape. Kaepernick wanted it taped and released in its entirety to teams and the public after the workout. The NFL refused to allow them to tape it.
3.) When #NFL refused to allow Kaepernick to tape the workout and control their own copy, Kaepernick asked that media be allowed into the workout to view/record the session. NFL said no. That’s when Kaepernick felt the league refused to be transparent and asked to change venues.
A thread on my too short training camp visit with the New York #Jets ...
1. Ryan Kalil addition is big. He could have gone elsewhere. Others would have jumped at him. That Kalil chose #Jets speaks to the new management making strides with their pitch. Part of anchoring this regime will be a culture sell and Kalil is a culture/program guy. He’s a win.
2. More on Kalil: I think his net positive for Sam Darnold and #Jets will be similar to what Max Unger did for Russell Wilson initially in Seattle. Making sure line protections are right, dialing in the unit’s chemistry, anchoring a combo with the guards that should be very good.
