Roughly 5 million people in #Texas are uninsured. So who are they? #healthcare
That's what we wanted to find out in our latest multi-year study. Here's a breakdown of what we found so far.
Most of the roughly five million uninsured Texans already qualify for a government #health program or for federal subsidies that would help pay for coverage — but they have not signed up.
Our multi-year study found roughly half of uninsured Texans have incomes over 200% of the federal poverty level (about $55,500 annually for a family of four). #healthcare#healthcoverage#texas
Our multi-year study's early survey findings indicate a significant majority of uninsured #Texans — 70% of respondents in our initial survey research — are unsure of their eligibility for financial assistance through the federal #AffordableCareAct (ACA). #healthcoverage
Our multi-year study's early survey findings also indicate the most-cited reasons among uninsured #Texans for not having health coverage is related to their employment status and the availability (or unavailability) of insurance through their employer. #healthcare#healthcoverage
While there are ways to obtain #healthcoverage outside of employer-sponsored insurance, the primacy of these responses demonstrates that many uninsured #Texans think of coverage as an employment benefit rather than a stand-alone plan.

As part of our ongoing study, we conducted a survey of more than 2,000 uninsured Texans, and have been conducting dozens of focus groups with uninsured people around the state for the past two months.

Sunset Advisory Commission members expressed concern over the drawn-out, years-long process of reforming @TCOLE, but they did appear to agree on a few changes they could push at next #txlege, @David_Barer reports for @KXAN_News.
Lawmakers have struggled to pass statutory changes to the @TCOLE, amid tensions with law enforcement groups — including police unions — over how much power the agency should wield over officers, Barer reports.
Presently, it has almost none.
The lawmakers did appear to agree on several changes that could give @TCOLE more oversight power.
Fixes could be coming to police separation reports, standards to create new departments, funding and more. No action was taken at the meeting, Barer reports. #txjustice
