Shree Umiya Dham Hindu Temple in Edison, NJ vandalized with “Free Palestine” graffiti. CoHNA strongly condemns this & stands with the temple in demanding that the perpetrators be brought to swift justice! Happened yesterday, when…1/n
…the Indian American community held a "March for Unity" event with several organizations participating. Unfortunately, in this peaceful event, bigots and racists like Pieter Friedrich intruded, trying to paint the community as extremist and intolerant. 2/n
But, why “Free Palestine” on a Hindu temple? #Hinduphobic narrative peddled by “academics” portrays Hindus as “colonizers” of Kashmir and draws false parallels with Palestine. The recent bulldozer controversy in Edison, NJ also provides fodder to push hatred against Hindus. 3/n
Classroom teachings about Kashmir at @RutgersU show blatant bias against Hindus & India, calling the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir as “occupied.” This is particularly insensitive given the ethnic cleansing of the indigenous Kashmiri Hindus in 1989-90 and continued violence.4/n
This, in turn, breeds hatred towards American Hindus, who are projected as “Hindu nationalists” or agents of a foreign government. 5/n
Shree Umiya Dham temple was also one of over 50 orgs who signed a coalition letter against @DemsTeaneck’s #Hinduphobic & hate filled resolution. We fear the vandalism incident may be potentially linked to such anti-Hindu propaganda in NJ and academia. 6/n

As the #Hinduphobia study by @ncri_io warned, online hatred can lead to real life consequences of violence and bigotry. Vandalism of a sacred place of worship in such a manner reflects the patterns that emerges from this groundbreaking study. 7/n rutgers.edu/news/rutgers-r…
Over the past few months, there’s been a sharp rise in anti-Hindu disinformation as well as attacks on #Hindu individuals, #temples and organizations. This latest act of vandalism adds to the growing concerns of the Hindu community in NJ and beyond. 8/n

EXTREMELY disappointing to see that @WhiteHouse @VP @POTUS have excluded Hindus, Buddhists and Jains from this important conference. As minority communities facing hatred and bigotry, why aren’t our voices given a platform? unitedwestand.gov 1/n Image
Accordingly to the recently released study on #Hinduphobia by Rutgers University and @ncri_io, there is a large spike in hatred and anti-Hindu disinformation on social media from extreme elements of society. This can translate into real life violence. rutgers.edu/news/rutgers-r… 2/n
More recently, a series of hate incidents against Hindu individuals and places of worship have created fear within our community. When we call for a “united stand” against hate, why do Hindus not matter? Are we less American? religionnews.com/2022/08/26/rec… 3/n

Misunderstanding about the sacred #Swastika vs Hitler’s #Hakenkreuz (hooked cross) can indeed lead to strong reactions & potential attacks on communities who consider Swastika sacred. The below image should be rightly condemned because it is a Nazi symbol. However…1/n
…The symbol is a Hakenkreuz as referred to by Hitler himself. He and the Nazis never used the word “Swastika.” Were clear that their symbol was a cross. cohna.org/swastika-is-no… 2/n

#HinduVoicesMatter. THREAD on the #Hypocrisy of "freedom of expression" when applied to Hinduism, given the recent #KaaliPosterControversy. Let's see how other communities have objected to appropriations and disparaging of their religions without being gaslighted or gagged. 1/n
In 2018, a Sikh filmmaker withdrew a film on Guru Nanak ji after several Sikh bodies protested against the depiction of the founder of Sikhism in the film. No one gaslighted the Sikh community or gagged their voices. 2/n business-standard.com/article/pti-st… Image
In 2013, a Los Angeles bar was forced to remove pictures of Sikh Gurus after protests from the community. The management agreed to hand the pictures over to more respectful displays at a local Gurudwara. No "South Asian Scholar" or artist cried foul. 3/n indiatoday.in/featured/story… Image

@Newspaperwalli, we got news for you. @Google employees protested against a bigoted Hinduphobe who has disparaged Hindu festivals & supported the dismantling of Hinduism. Plus, Google is a big company - they are not waiting for your or her permission to launch their projects. 2/n
Then, you can always count on Prof Truschke for #Hinduphobia. Here, she parrots various colonial approaches to identify “caste” and therefore who is “casteist,” (including kids born and raised in America?) And recommends Equality Labs’ flawed survey as a resource. 3/n
Over a hundred years ago, another racist, Herbert Hope Risley, used markers, skin color, nasal index and other flawed methods to classify the entire Indian population into “castes” and froze a system that was previously fluid and dynamic 4/n. pragyata.com/lord-risley-an…

A THREAD on Thenmozhi & Equality Labs for @JeffHorwitz. Please get some “familiarity” with the hate that they promote against Hinduism & Hindu festivals & why Hindu employees of different backgrounds at @Google pushed back. 👇🏽1/n
@JeffHorwitz, do keep in mind that Hindus are a micro minority in the US, and only one in four Americans even knows a Hindu. By supporting her, you are advancing #Hinduphobia & anti-Hindu bigotry against our community. Shame! 2/n
March 2020 - Thenmozhi & Equality Labs openly disparaged the sacred & popular festival of Holi, falsely claiming that it is a violent festival where men throw rocks & semen at women walking on the street & that the festival celebrates the burning of a “low caste” woman. 3/n
