2/ When Carter removed the 2nd gilded wooden coffin from the first he was puzzled by the weight. Opening the 2nd coffin he was astounded to find the 3rd coffin was of solid gold!
3/ This incredible object is among the heaviest gold objects in the world weighing 243 lbs (110 kilograms" of pure yellow gold. #Mythology #Art #Gold #Egypt #Archaeology #AncientArt #History #Jewelry #Ancient #AncientEgypt #Egypt #Egypte #Egipto #Egito #Αίγυπτος #Ägypten #مصر
4/ the coffin has minimal inlays of glass & semi-precious stones, mainly its scepters & the two vulture goddesses wrapping their wings around the king protecively
5/ The entire coffin is engraved with feather patterns & images of the goddesses Isis & Nut, sisters of Osiris, protecting the king who became Osiris in death.
6/ The gold is mesmerizing, but the workmanship is so fine it would be a masterpiece even if it was made of a lesser metal.
7/ The eyes are outlined in blue glass, but the eye inlays disintegrated shortly after discovery. Around the neck is a Shebyu-collar which marked the king's deification. The gold served to transform the king into a god, especially the sun-god Re, whose flesh was gold.
8/ even the foot plate is decorated with an image of the goddess Isis spreading her wings to protect the king who has become her brother Osiris

1/ Merry Christmas! A favored part of the Nativity story in art is the Holy Family's flight into Egypt, especially the theme of rest on the flight. Modern versions often have pharaonic monuments like this image of Mary & her child asleep on a sphinx #Christmas #Egypt #NATIVIDAD Image
2/ Since the Middle Ages, the Flight into Egypt occurs in art including stained glass & stone carvings in cathedrals #noel2025 #noelleholiday #Weihnachten #Xmas #Christmas2025 #ChristmasEve #Natale #Natale2025 Image

3/ In the Renaissance, the Flight to Egypt remained popular with famous artists like Giotto. The Gospel of Matthew never mentions a donkey but artists consistently render Mary & Jesus on a donkey, often led by Joseph as a symbol of humility. #VirginMary #jesuschrist #ChristmasDay Image

1/ Let's have some fun with debunking my favorite internet ancient Egypt conspiracy theory (that's not about the Pyramids). The infamous "Abydos Helicopter"
The most recent bleat about this was @darkjournalist who claims this "stele" proves the Egyptians had advanced tech #Egypt Image
2/ Not just helicopters, "high tech airships" that they "inherited from an older civilization. @darkjournalist claims "There's been an effort to suppress this powerful image but it has failed." Well, no. The image & theory have been around since the internet got big in 1995. O
3/ The inscription comes from Sety I's temple at Abydos. Sety left the temple partly unfinished & his son Ramesses II completed it. Some places Ramesses carved over his father's inscriptions. This happened here too. #archaeohistories #ancient #Ramesses #antiquity #history #art
