In the spirit of stubborn optimism, I'm crowdsourcing a list of COP-firsts.

#COP27 was far from perfect (and that's an understatement!) but some pretty incredible things did happen for the first time ever (please add!)
🧵
Another first in the #LossAndDamage realm: #COP27 agreed to set up the #SantiagoNetwork on L&D

It will provide a match-making service between countries suffering from loss and damage and those organisations that can support them to respond.

More here:
A COP first to watch in the months ahead: the (overdue!) transformation of the global financial system is now strongly hooked into the UNFCCC

@miaamormottley can be proud

A COP first with credit to our human rights colleagues: the human right to a clean, health and sustainable environment (UNGA A/76/L.75) is now embedded in the UNFCCC - watch this space!

A big COP-first: inclusion of nature-based solutions in the cover decision.

A powerful bridge to the UN biodiversity COP in Montreal next month!

#COP27 for the first time also delivers on ocean-based action - crucial for our friends in Great Ocean States (and all of us really)

Another first at COP: a more holistic approach to agriculture, with discussion now expanded into food systems, food security, nutrition, role of Indigenous peoples, women, small-scale farmers

A COP first: #COP27 had the first-ever youth envoy!

@omniaelomrani1's tireless work delivered stronger inclusion and empowerment of children and youth in the formal UNFCCC process:

#COP27 is the first COP to make reference to tipping points and the multiple simultaneous crises we are facing.

We can't address what we don't acknowledge - this is a first step.

Another first At #COP27: the first UNFCCC work program on #JustTransition - grounded in social dialogue and social protections

Well done union friends @ituc

Perhaps the biggest first at #COP27 is the breaking of the fault lines between developed/developing, which have plagued this process since 1992.

Perhaps the #LossAndDamageFund is a 1st glimpse of what global solidarity and climate justice looks like?

#COP27 also saw the first-ever climate march INSIDE a UN-controlled zone - the only way to ensure the safety of those involved.

Frontline communities from around participated in the march, chanting "no climate justice without human rights"

A new #COP27 text on the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) just dropped.

Here is what the previous iteration said:

Seems like a few reshuffles but the framework to develop the GGA still stands.

This is the latest text: unfccc.int/documents/6243… Image
Latest GGA text reconfirms the development of an adaptation framework, consisting of:
-Dimensions (adaptation building blocks, if you will)
-Themes (i.e. sectors in all but name)
-Cross-cutting considerations (inc. Indigenous and traditional knowledge!) Image
This new GGA text further improves the interlinkages with the Global Stocktake, allowing the Global Goal on Adaptation to be updated after every GST

The 4 workshops in 2023 to determine the GGA will now also be in person. Image

Proposed #COP27 Cover decision text is now out:

unfccc.int/documents/6243…
Proposed #COP27 cover decision text reaffirms the Glasgow Pact, but does not include stronger language on coal phase out
Proposed #COP27 cover text includes 2 wins and a "maybe" for #LossAndDamageFinance:
-Welcomes it now being an agenda item
-Welcomes the establishment of the Santiago Network
-[Placeholder for possible Loss & damage fund]

The compromise deal on #LossAndDamageFinance by #COP27 President has just dropped

unfccc.int/documents/6243…
New proposal by #COP27 president on #LossAndDamageFinance includes the establishment of a new fund "for assisting developing countries in responding to loss and damage"
Proposal would also establish "transitional committee" to figure out the details of the L&D Fund - by COP28 already

As #COP27 goes in overtime - here's a reminder of why we need #LossAndDamageFinance

The @LancetCountdown captures the loss & damage to our health from growing climate impacts.

In 2022, these include: 98 million more people suffering from food insecurity caused by heat /1
Heat exposure led to 470 billion potential labour hours lost globally in 2021, @LancetCountdown report finds.

In some countries this equates to 5% of GDP lost, further worsening the cost-of-living crisis.

/2
There's been a rise of almost 1/3rd of ALL land affected by extreme drought in 2012–21 (compared to 1951–1960), finds @LancetCountdown report

Add to that the war in Ukraine, and you have a perfect storm for global food insecurity
#LossAndDamage @COP27P

Negotiations are still ongoing to establish a Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) at #COP27, but there seems to have been a breakthrough last night:

latest draft now has agreement on the establishment of a framework for the GGA - to both enhance action + monitor progress Image
Current draft for framework of the Global Goal on Adaptation includes exhaustive list of
-sectors (although no longer called that)
-cross-cutting issues (HR, gender)
-sources of info (NDCs, IPCC, etc.) Image
Also great to see Parties found a compromise on the involvement of the IPCC in setting a Global Goal on Adaptation.

Could not agree on a special IPCC report on adaptation, but agreed to update adaptation reporting guidelines and involve IPCC in development of metrics. Image

One of the few agenda items that have been finalised at #COP27 thus far is the Santiago Network on Loss & Damage
The final UNFCCC draft text just dropped.
So what does it include? 🧵 Image
The Santiago network was agreed on at COP25 in Madrid, and will be established at COP27 in Sharm.

Simply put, it will provide a match-making service between countries suffering from loss and damage and those organisations that can support them to respond. Image
The Santiago network on L&D will consist of:
-A secretariat (sitting under WIM)
-An advisory body (17 people across regions & constituencies)
-Members (atm mainly UN agencies, GCF, World Bank, and other funders, but this will expand over time) Image
