What's going on in #Zhengzhou and the Foxconn factory? Is it a #Zerocovid protest or a labor dispute? Let's break it down...Full thread 🧵
Foxconn said that “some new hires” at the Zhengzhou campus had complained to the company about work allowances. It seems the major problem here is compensation that was promised but not delivered.
One former worker said that the terms of a “retention allowance”, which had been promised to new employees who stay at the plant until February 15, 2023 had been changed, according to reports. Workers now need to stay until March 15 to receive the bonus - an extra month.
The problem now is that the first batch of people who have isolated have arrived at the Foxconn campus as new workers. Foxconn originally promised that new workers and original workers would live separately, but in reality they all live in the dorm buildings
The old employees haven’t done Covid testing for 7-8 days, which means that there are positive Covid cases living and working together with new employees. This caused panic among the new workers, who feel cheated. That was the first deception.
Last night everybody received a new contract from Foxconn, regardless if they were new employees who had already entered the Foxconn campus or employees who were still in quarantine, and the contract was totally different from the one issued by Foxconn at the time of recruitment
This situation is a major problem and this factory in Zhengzhou is the world’s largest iPhone factory. Now Foxconn has promised to pay each newly-hired worker 10,000 yuan (US$1,400) to leave the campus immediately in a desperate move to end protests that have turned violent
Ultimately how will this effect $AAPL and the holiday season ahead? Investor Dan Ives wrote "With demand remaining firm into holiday season, we would estimate this negatively impacting roughly 5% of iPhone sales this quarter based on impacted China production/supply issues.
The videos and images coming out of the Foxconn factory in #Zhengzhou are terrible and shows the massive level of frustration amongst the workers. This is not good for China as the country enjoys a good reputation for its reliable manufacturing.
It will be interesting to watch what the reaction from Apple will be over this situation and what China's government can do to help resolve the situation. Obviously workers original contracts should be honored and employees compensated correctly.
But with Covid cases rising across the country and more lockdowns going into effect. Companies manufacturing in China will have to consider the long term risk of supply chain slowdown and delays as China continues its fight against Covid 19

Xi Jinping called out Justin Trudeau yesterday at the G20, but Xi’s public scolding revealed a deep secret that few people know about Trudeau, a thread 🧵
The video that everyone has now seen is an INCREDIBLE insight into Xi Jinping. Rarely does Western media have informal conversations like this available to the public eye. Xi was mad at Trudeau because he leaked their conversation to the press
Xi was not happy and called him out. Trudeau tries to save face by responding, but Xi didn’t want to hear any of it. There are conditions and protocols that world leaders need to uphold and Trudeau lost a lot of face by breaching those rules

Interesting observation on governments and media around the world 🌎

Western media has been incredible negative about #XiJingping continuing as China’s president, most articles seem shocked that Ci has consolidated power and will rule China for the foreseeable future
But anyone who understands China knew this was going to happen. It’s not a shock and this plan has been in motion since 2018 when China removed term limits for the president. However look at what’s happening in UK and US governments:
The UK government has been in shambles…it’s embarrassing for a PM to resign after just 45 days in office, it shows a major flaw in l Western style democracies, electing people with little merit or experience. What about USA?

What's most fascinating about #Pfizer and the #unvaccinated is that is offers a unique insight into a surprising difference between China and the West. You must read this thread 👇
Many people would imagine that #China would be super strict with #vaccines and force it's citizens to get the jab. Interesting enough there is a large amount of #unvaccinated seniors throughout China who are both sacred of the virus, but also scared of the vaccine.
Earlier this year #China announced it would require seniors in Beijing to get the vaccine (Covid cases were surging and unvaccinated elderly were at high risk) but when the news came out, there was huge public backlash against the Chinese government. What did they do in response?

While Western countries criticize #China and its Belt and Road Initiative, China ignores the noise, keeps it's head down, and get's work done. Here is the new China-built Pelješac Bridge, a key infrastructure project in #Croatia. This bridge is a gamechanger & here is why:
(1/4)
The 2.4 km bridge connects the Croatian mainland with the Peljesac Peninsula of its southernmost Dubrovnik-Neretva County, bypassing a short strip of land belonging to Bosnia and Herzegovina. This bridge now gives Croatia territorial integrity and better access to the area (2/4)
Construction companies from Italy, Turkey, Austria, and China all bid for the job but #China won the bid as they offered the most affordable price and also offered to complete the project 6 months faster than anyone else.

I'm very worried about Shanghai and the future of #China....what's happened in the past few weeks has changed the future of China. Some of you will agree with my analysis and some of you won't, but here is a thread 🧵 on the #COVID19 situation in #Shanghai:
Yesterday Shanghai registered 994 locally transmitted #COVID19 cases and 22,348 local asymptomatic carriers, the first time the number of asymptomatic infections decreased since April, but the city has to continued strengthening its strict prevention measures.
The vast majority of new infections are now among people in quarantine/”closed-loop management”. This is why China sends all positives, close contacts (密接) & contacts of close contacts (次密接) to centralized facilities, to break the transmission chains as quickly as possible

Jamie Dimon, the Chairman and CEO of JP Morgan wrote about the future of America 🇺🇸 and China 🇨🇳 in his annual letter. Here are some of the highlights:

The most important relationship over the next 100 years will be the one between #America (and its allies) and #China.
The stronger the allied nations, the better it is for America. But for #America to get this essential relationship right, we need to have a clear-eyed view of our strategic economic and national security interests.
#America & #China have large differences: ideological, democracy vs single-party rule, market capitalism vs state-controlled capitalism. We also have common interests: halting nuclear proliferation, reducing terrorism, stopping climate change & promoting peaceful relationships
