2/ Although I’ve advocated in this space through all levels of govt- only the private sector have truly committed - with the most beautiful location, sparing no expense to making it a truly healing environment for survivors…
3/ …with a pool, gym, art therapy, yoga, fantastic healthcare workers, inpatient & outpatient holistic therapeutic service.
4/ We have had such wonderful community support.
We have learnt so much already- that the care provided is desperately wanted, the treatment helps, the acknowledgment is validating & preliminary results are fantastic @illawarramerc
5/ BUT, it is so hard to find people who truly want to do the work. It’s emotionally difficult work. The risk of vicarious trauma is high, and the need is enormous- if we want to truly be able to address it…
7/ It’s not enough to have a session on ‘trauma-informed care’. Anyone going into mental health need to know this is the work they are going to do, not consider it an ‘optional extra’ or ‘speciality’ @RANZCP@DrAsthaTomar@LouiseKNewman@DrLataSatyen@jayashrikulkar1
8/ Government officials will always ask for evidence of why they should invest in women’s health…yet continue to use systems that already show absolutely no return in investment, or in fact, increase the cost to society.
9/ We do not ask the cost-benefit analysis for the huge investment in pharmaceuticals, we do not seem to ask why the mental health problem is growing despite more & more investment in the ‘’same old’ with no positive outcomes @bronnietaylor@RyanPark_Keira@HewardBelle
10/ But as long as we continue to see the framing of trauma from child abuse & family & sexual violence as not worth treating, or a ‘job for the private sector’ or
‘awaiting more evidence of needing speciality care’ @CCChatMagazine@mike_salter@marilyn_mcmahon@YouAreLobbyLud
🧵 1/ This week, I have been asked multiple times- why this new Trauma Hospital is for women-only.
I have been accused of discriminating against male victims of trauma.
2/ I have spent many years working with survivors of trauma, in fact much of my work has been with men…defence personnel, police and other first responders. I continue to treat those men. @kellyanntansley@EleniPsaltis
3/ They access PTSD services that already exist.
Most of the time the men I’ve treated have experienced trauma in the workplace, and childhood trauma. Most of them have been traumatised by other men. @JaneCaro@davtw2@kelly_pages@kelfuller@DrAsthaTomar
Murray, have you read the report by the Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council revealed 45 per cent of women in the state's psychiatric hospitals have been sexually assaulted in their care? @PatsKarvelas@EleniPsaltis@davtw2@angelo_virgona@mbismark
The same report showed that 70% of women who end up in psych hospitals have been victims of some form of sexual abuse.
So I stand by my clinical opinion that it is better to keep our female patients both physically & psychologically safe in a single sex environment
I am sure with your years of experience treating survivors of sexual abuse you would be familiar with the literature that clearly outlines the risks to women in psychiatric facilities and how they have been recognised as an issue since the 70’s. ps.psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.1176/ap…
"The idea that a police officer or firefighter, who do great jobs, can access that support but the witnesses, the people who suffer directly don't, that shocked me,"
1/ My heart is broken. Tonight I found out my friends cancer has returned. Could have caught it earlier, except they cancelled his biopsy, because of COVID. This is what living wt COVID looks like. This is what living in a 1st world country looks like, where govt fails to ensure
2/ adequate vaccine supply, fails to educate its people about the importance of vaccines, a govt that utterly fails at gaining the respect of its people by treating them respectfully & honestly.
3/ a government that sees no value in the truth. No value in accurate & frank answers. No value in acknowledging what they know & don’t know. This is what the loss of a friend, a son, a brother looks like
