First leaders-level #EUASEANSummit is an excellent opportunity to deepen EU-ASEAN cooperation.
I emphasised we are all more linked than ever – in addition to climate crisis, difficulties resulting from COVID, we also face Russia’s war in Ukraine and its global consequences. 1/
Russia’s aggression is not only an European issue or a “regional conflict”.
What is at stake in Ukraine are the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and international law: including territorial integrity and sovereignty – that is, the right to exist as a country. 2/
Situation is clear-cut: there is one aggressor and one victim.
Russia seeks to destroy a sovereign UN Member State. It's testing if conquering a country in 21st century is acceptable.
Our task is to prove him wrong or the whole rules-based international order is in danger. 3/
We must build connections with those we can trust. That's the commitment of #GlobalGateway, EU's €300 billion investment package. Building connections must go hand in hand with cybersecurity. Great potential for cooperation between EU and ASEAN-Singapore Cybersecurity Centre. /4

🧵 @NewStatesman asked me to look back on the past year.
2022 has made the face of Russian occupation and war crimes visible to the whole world. It's also made clear why giving anything to the aggressor and seeking premature peace is dangerous. 1/
Why is Russia waging genocidal war against Ukraine?
My response: look at history. Soviet Union fell, its imperialism never did. Stalinism returned. Use of force continued, against Moldova, Georgia, Crimea, Donbas.
Russia's full-scale war shouldn't have come as a surprise. 2/
We have been on right track with our support to Ukraine. But we must step it up until the last Russian soldier has left Ukraine.
We must make sure war criminals are held accountable.
Our response will be studied by all the dictators and would-be dictators across the globe. 3/
Estonia, Finland and Sweden will contribute by creating a platform that develops skills related to sustainable use of wood. 1/6
I am also happy Estonia will join the #NordicBauhaus family and develop a shared culture and vision with Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Faroe Islands in building the best living environment that connects people with nature. 2/6
Also thank you @MarinSanna, @vonderleyen, @BuschEbba for today's discussion on the role of forests providing material for sustainable construction while fostering biodiversity and carbon sinks.
Estonians are passionate about forests, and we expect a lot from our forests. 3/6
Honoured to be awarded Transatlantic Leadership Award by @CEPA. #MeetTheMoment
Transatlantic alliance for us in Estonia is the real-world expression of freedom.
We're defending the very same idea of freedom, including territorial integrity and sovereignty, in #Ukraine now. 1/5
@cepa The transatlantic community is more united in purpose and action than for some time. But Russia will keep testing us.
The way to end it is to keep offering Ukraine quick military aid. Ukrainians are proving: this war is winnable. Extraordinary support by U.S. has been key. 2/5
@cepa While we are very focused on the conventional war, we mustn't forget Russia is also waging a hybrid war and information war.
We must pay attention to the stability of our societies. Russia’s long-term interest is to divide us – not only us as allies, but also our societies. 3/5
🧵 My remarks at #NATO Military Committee Conference in Tallinn:
#Russia’s war on European soil is the most serious security situation of our generation.
NATO has made a significant shift in mindset and its defence. Many Allies are also giving #Ukraine crucial military aid. 1/7
The #Kremlin has one big aim: terrorise and fulfill the imperialist dream.
They threaten the world with famine and a nuclear disaster. They are waging an energy war.
The Kremlin wants negotiations because then they can get something they didn’t have to begin with. 2/7
That is why we cannot give in one inch.
If we do not counter Russian aggression and expansionism decisively and bring those behind it to justice, the whole international rules-based order would be under threat.
That means no country and no nation could feel safe. 3/7
